Olivier, Viljoen off to Italy

Johannesburg - Italian club Aironi have snapped up the signatures of two Cheetahs players in their recruitment drive for the new European season.

Flyhalf Naas Olivier and utility forward Frans Viljoen will both head to Italy for the new European season to join their new club.

Olivier has struggled to find a starting place since the emergence of young flyhalf Sias Ebersohn, while Viljoen has had various injuries through the season.

Viljoen played five seasons ago for Stade Francais and will not be unfamiliar with the European rugby scene.

While Olivier confirmed his signature a week or two ago, the Italian club were overjoyed by the announcement that Viljoen would join them.

"We are pleased to have signed Frans on a two year contract. He will add experience, power and physicality in the back row area, so important in modern rugby," said Director of Rugby Franco Tonni. "If necessary, he can also play as a lock. That's why we think he's the right guy in the right place."

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské was unavailable for comment but is expected to lose a number of his Super Rugby side at the end of the year.
