Newman gets Cheetahs nod

Jóhann Thormählen

Bloemfontein – Morgan Newman turned 25 on Saturday and belatedly got the perfect birthday gift from the Cheetahs coaching staff this week with his inclusion in their final squad for this year’s Super Rugby competition.

The former Western Province centre is one of around 40 players that the Cheetahs will draw on in the tournament.

Newman joined the Cheetahs on a trial towards the end of last season after not getting much game time at WP. He has played for WP, the Emerging Boks and Maties in his career.

He executed one of the hardest tackles in the Varsity Cup here at Shimla Park two years ago when he brought down Shimlas centre Earl Snyman.

While Andries Strauss is the first choice at No 12, Newman will provide valuable depth in the midfield and is expected to play in the competition.

Injured players such as lock Izak van der Westhuizen (shoulder) and flank Heinrich Brüssow (knee ligaments) have also been included in the Cheetahs squad.

The Cheetahs squad:

Coenie Oosthuizen, Kevin Stevens, Marcel van der Merwe, WP Nel, Kobus Calldo, Adriaan Strauss, Ryno Barnes, Skipper Badenhorst, Francois Uys, Izak van der Westhuizen, Martin Muller, Waltie Vermeulen, Wilhelm Steenkamp, Kabamba Floors, Heinrich Brüssow, Johan Wessels, Davon Raubenheimer, Juan Smith, Philip van der Walt, Ashley Johnson, Frans Viljoen, Sarel Pretorius, Tewis de Bruyn, Tertius Carse, Naas Olivier, Louis Strydom, Sias Ebersohn, Ryno Benjamin, Fabian Juries, Philip Burger, Philip Snyman, Wilmaure Louw, Andries Strauss, Morgan Newman, Barry Geel, Corné Uys, Robert Ebersohn, Riaan Smit, Hennie Daniller, Riaan Viljoen.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
