Brisbane - Wallabies winger Drew Mitchell will miss the World Cup after an ankle injury so bad on Saturday that even his Waratahs teammates were shaken.
Mitchell broke his right ankle and another bone in his leg when he ran into the back of Queensland No. 8 Scott Higginbotham and fell awkwardly midway through the first half of the 19-15 loss to Queensland in Super 15 rugby at Suncorp Stadium.
Mitchell screamed out in pain at his foot, which twisted in the opposite direction. He had to be sedated before the ankle was reset by medics.
"He'll be gone for the year," New South Wales coach Chris Hickey said. "It's a pretty significant injury."
New South Wales captain Phil Waugh said the team was unnerved by the incident.
"I think it rattled anyone who saw it," Waugh said. "It was disappointing - you don't want to see that happen to anyone in the world in any sport."
Mitchell, with 27 tries in 55 tests, was considered a certainty for the Wallabies squad for the World Cup in New Zealand in September.
