Mitchell hearing set to start

2012-07-17 07:45

Cape Town - The disciplinary hearing of suspended Lions coach John Mitchell will start at the offices of the Golden Lions Rugby Union on Tuesday.

It's now 25 days since Mitchell was suspended after a group of players presented a 'list of grievances' to GLRU president Kevin de Klerk complaining about the manner in which Mitchell treated his players.

De Klerk later said the suspension of Mitchell wasn't only based purely on players' complaints. "It is inaccurate to say it is a player-driven thing and I would like us to move away from that," De Klerk said last month.

"It was inclusive of a number of processes and it wasn't necessarily the players on their own, and that is the way the position stands."

Mitchell informed Beeld that he welcomes the hearing so that he can set the record straight. He will be assisted by his legal team.

There appears to be no chance that Mitchell will return to his position as coach at the union, but they are yet to start looking at a possible replacement.

"For now we will continue with Ackers (Johan Ackerman - who was named interim coach) and Carlos (Spencer-backline coach). John is formally still the coach, so it would be wrong of us to start looking for someone else," Ruben Moggee, CEO of the GLRU, said.

Lions just know how to make a mess...........

  • charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-07-17 07:55

I wonder what this is really about. A coach talking a little too harshly to grown professional rugby players? I don't buy it. This has shower room scandal written all over it.

      Citizen - 2012-07-17 08:06

I agree, he should rather just get on a plane and say 'cheers losers i'm out of here' sounds to me like our boys are unionised and 'cant be spoken to in this way'

      henrymatthews4 - 2012-07-17 08:10

I also dont buy this rediculous reason they are given, its actually pathetic from the players point of view.If its true then get out of rugby and go play netball.Lions should contract meisiekind olivier and mev.spies and go form the she team

      staal.burgher - 2012-07-17 08:37

The disciplinary hearing is only so that they don't get taken to the labour court or so that they can get out of their contract with him perhaps regarding early termination. There is due process that should be followed and that is all the Lions are doing.

Why does the union not bring in Nick Mallet to assist the team. His talent is wasted by presenting on Super Sport, however, I am sure his pockets don’t mind.

      gareth.bird.56 - 2012-07-17 08:20

Because Nick Mallet takes even less sh*t from the players! Agree he is a great coach though!

      louis.bensch.31 - 2012-07-17 08:49

Ah please, then Nick will make sure that Skinstad makes his comeback, no thanx

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-17 09:29

Nick mallet said the stormers will win the tournament

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-17 09:29

  • louis.bensch.31 - 2012-07-17 08:53

Hope this is resolved as quickly as possible so that the Lions can successfully defend the Currie Cup. Thanx for your help John, you made a huge difference, great coach.

If it was only the players complainning then I have to say it is the childdish lions players ever. In school when you lose there was always consecenses and you known why. They get money to play its there job to win, just like any other job if you don't preform you have some dissiplen. But I will always be a lion till the day I die. There goes your best coach ever.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-17 09:31

      Complaining Consecenses????? Perform Discipline

  • Ingrid - 2012-07-17 09:37

He will get a golden hand shake and we will not hear what really happened, if he was so bad why did they employ him in the first place. If he had baggage he brought it with him so what's the deal. Wasn't his references checked???????

  • Magnus Kemp - 2012-07-17 09:44

maby they prefer the strong silent type as a coach...

  • maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-17 09:48

He smoke the same stuff as Ian McIntosh.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-17 14:09

judging by the eye every week in the interviews he was on some strong stuff

  • betsy.dorris - 2012-07-17 10:00

Lions are not even a second rate outfit. Not only should the Spears not have entered the S15 (which thank God they didn't) but the Lions should be dropped out of the tournament too. Perennial embarrassment.

      suidlander.vanwyk - 2012-07-17 19:56

this union is utter useless, corruption and incompetency is the order of the day at Ellis Park

  • Charles - 2012-07-17 10:47

John Mitchell is the guy that gave you LION supporters something to cheer about when he led you guys to a Currie cup win something that hasnt happened for a very long time!!!!! but then again...............

  • Michael - 2012-07-17 10:47

In my humble opinion this all but a farce!!! The Lions Unions have not had such a great cosch since Kitch Christie, and if it is true that it is the players complaining, then maybe the Lions should look for players that are willing to play as a team, accept the critisism that comes their way, and start doing what they are paid for, that is to play Rugby and to WIN! These "players" should realise that the only reason they have a job is because of the public supporting them, and not for any other reason. LIONS PLAYERS, start doing your JOB and stop complaining.
