Matfield playing like an old man - Ollie
Cape Town - Former Springbok prop Ollie le Roux says Bulls lock Victor Matfield's form has dipped to an alarming level.
Matfield was a shadow of himself in the Bulls first two Super Rugby games this season as the men from Pretoria started the season on a low note.
They lost their first game at home to the Stormers, before again going down at Loftus Versfeld to the Hurricanes this past weekend.
Matfield made headlines in 2014 when he made a stellar return to the game after initially retiring at the end of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He performed remarkably well for the Bulls in Super Rugby and was recalled as a key member of the Springbok squad.
However, Matfield turns 38 later this year and Le Roux feels time may have caught up with the veteran lock.
In an interview with SA Rugbymag, Le Roux said Matfield "is playing like an old man at the moment" and that the Bulls lineout ace has "lost the presence he once had".
Le Roux fears that the longer Matfield goes on, the more his legacy may become tainted.
The Bulls face a tough battle against the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, and Le Roux predicted that Matfield will have his hands full against young Springbok Pieter-Steph du Toit.
Le Roux said Matfield will remain competitive at lineout time, but not so much of a factor in open play.
Kick-off for Saturday's clash is scheduled for 17:05.
