Uncertainty over Matfield

Cape Town - Rumours surfaced on Tuesday that former Springbok and Bulls lock Victor Matfield might come out of retirement and play for the Sharks in Super Rugby.

Media reports on Sunday indicated that Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer is keen for Matfield to return to lead the Boks in their three-Test series against England in June.

The website, iol.co.za, reports that there was speculation that Matfield could ask the Sharks for game time should he answer Meyer’s plea for him to come out of retirement.

These rumours surfaced on Twitter on Tuesday, with rugby website, the Front Row Grunt, tweeting the following on its Twitter page:

"Met with a group very close to all things sporting in SA this morning ... Matfield return a done deal ... 1 year contract signed .
..

"Matfield seen suiping a cappuccino with John Plumtree this morning ... Big Vic in Black and White ... But will he be dynamite?, referring to the black and white colours of the Sharks.

But later tweets seemed to pour cold water on those rumours when the Sharksworld website responded on their Twitter page: "@FrontRowGrunt that story is not true... Matfield is not in Durban today.

"I checked with a friend who knows Vic well. He's in Pretoria."

However, whether or not Matfield was in Durban discussing a possible move with the Sharks coach remains a mystery after he was apparently spotted by a member of the public.

Grant Gavin, a property investor from Durban, said on Twitter he saw the former Bok lock on Tuesday morning.

"Saw Victor Matfield having coffee with Plumtree in #DurbanNorth this morning. The rumors might well be true!" tweeted Gavin.
