Wellington - Hurricanes inside centre Ma'a Nonu has decided not to appeal the supplementary judicial ruling from SANZAR which extended the period of his suspension until after the Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Chiefs on March 12.
The one week suspension handed to Nonu on Monday for a dangerous charge in the Hurricanes' 14-9 loss to the Highlanders last Friday was intended to make him ineligible to play against the Crusaders in Wellington on Saturday.
But, with that match cancelled and the four points split evenly following Tuesday's deadly earthquake in Christchurch, SANZAR judicial officer Nigel Hampton QC on Thursday decided the ban would be imposed against the Chiefs as the Hurricanes have a bye next week.
Serving the ban this week would have effectively resulted in Nonu being eligible to play without serving any effective sanction, Hampton said.
Hurricanes chairperson Paul Collins said: "Despite the legal concerns surrounding the supplementary decision, in the end Ma'a felt that it just was not the right time to contest the issues around the timing of his suspension."
