Louw, Koster may get run

Stephen Nell

Cape Town – Boland will come to Newlands in their new pink jerseys on Saturday, but there is nothing soft about the loose forward combination the Stormers plan on unleashing in their friendly rugby match.

Springbok flank Francois Louw and promising loose forward Nick Koster may well feature in the Stormers’ final warm-up game.

With Schalk Burger also expected to be in the picture after missing Saturday’s match against the Sharks due to attending the Butch James’s wedding, it may be a long day for the Cavaliers against the Stormers.

“Koster may be fit and we’d like to give Flo (Louw) a run,” said Stormers forwards coach Matt Proudfoot.

“We also want to see how CJ van der Linde goes at tighthead prop. One of the other issues for us is the decision-making at breakdown. We allowed the Sharks to counter-ruck and get to Ricky Januarie too easily on Saturday. It’s important that we ensure we are ready in every area.

“The Lions will be very motivated when they come to Newlands on 26 February for our first Super Rugby game. We have a bye in the first week and it’s important that we aren’t caught out in that second week.”

Hooker Deon Fourie may also feature this weekend if he manages to shrug off an injury niggle. He had shoulder surgery in the off-season.
Proudfoot said that the Stormers would like to field a “mix of experienced players and youth” against the Cavaliers.

“Boland will give us a tough game. They are a proud side and I rate their lineout work very highly. We want it to be tough.”

Rynhardt Elstadt has impressed on the flank for the Stormers and is expected to get game time as a No 4 lock this weekend. It appears as if the Stormers are keeping their options open for a lock partner for Andries Bekker.

Anton van Zyl would have been a strong candidate for the No 4 jersey, but dislocated a shoulder in training a few weeks ago.

“It’s always a blow when you lose a player like that. Anton’s confidence was very high and he would probably have started at No 4. We’ve had a look at De Kock Steenkamp there and he impressed with his work-rate and intensity,” said Proudfoot.

He has also been chuffed by the contribution of Van der Linde since the Springbok prop’s arrival.

“CJ has brought a new dimension in our scrumming sessions.”
