Lions to probe sexual assault

2011-05-30 17:22

Johannesburg - The Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) said on Monday that neither the players nor any of their administrators had been contacted by New Zealand authorities with regards to a player accused of sexual assault.

New Zealand website stuff.co.nz reported a Lions rugby player had been allegedly involved in a case of sexual assault in Dunedin following their Super Rugby 26-22 victory over the Highlanders on Saturday.

The Lions immediately issued a statement on behalf of the union's president Kevin de Klerk denying they had any knowledge of the incident.

"No direct contact from any authorities from New Zealand has been received."

The website reported the police had confirmed that the alleged assault took place during the early hours of Sunday morning and involved a 18-year-old female.

The alleged incident took place in the hours after the touring South African team beat the Highlanders 26-22 in their Super Rugby match at Carisbrook on Saturday night.

It is understood an 18-year-old University of Otago student complained that she was sexually assaulted.

Friends of the girl at one of the University's halls of residence said they had been warned not to talk to reporters about the incident, stuff.co.nz reported..

Otago University communications manager Megan McPherson said the incident was a "police matter".

Police on Monday apparently requested video footage from a bar in central Dunedin.

De Klerk said the union would work closely with the Lions rugby team management to investigate the report.

Let's hope this does not contribute to them being hammered this weekend. Great local derby sharks vs cheetahs, going to be a cracker. Bulls vs Waratahs?? Stormers vs Rebels, should be stormers by 15!!! Lions vs Force, I pick the lions by 7.....

      WPBEFONK - 2011-05-31 07:35

@Joe Stormer - Gebaseer op vertonings en posisie op die log wie dink jy, behoort die game tussen die Rebels en die Stormers te wen?? En wie dink jy behoort die game tussen die Bulls en die Waratahs te wen??

I'm no Stormers supporter, but the Stormers should be looking at winning by 30. Those rebels are a useless bunch. Event the EP Kings will do better than that

      WPBEFONK - 2011-05-30 18:37

@iceman1982 - I understand your point and agree, but I just want to show some respect to the other teams...

      Vincent - 2011-05-30 20:01

The Rebels should not be under estimated. They are a good side when playing at home. They just do not finish off their games and Stormers have a lot of injuries in key roles. Though I am sure the stormers will win, I doubt its going to be by 30.

I am also not a stomers seporter. They got the beter change to win the super15 this year but like they play the last 2 games they will not win.Brumbies is the lowest team and they batled agains them and the rebels is a stronger team as brumbies.

I have to say the Bulls recent form is pretty frightning! There's not a team that will stop them now, even as a loyal Stormer supporter I can't bet against the Bulls. They have serious BMT!
