Lions target Bakkies signature

Johannesburg - The Golden Lions are targeting the signature of Springbok lock Bakkies Botha as their next major signing for 2012.

Botha’s contract ends at the end of October with the Bulls and it was widely expected that he would take up a lucrative contract with French club Toulon at this time. However, sources in France have confirmed that Toulon have given up on getting the giant lock’s signature after he told them he had decided to end his career in South Africa.

The Bulls have not spoken to Botha about renewing his contract, mainly because he gave them an indication that he was not interested in renewing it after it ended.

Botha forms part of a small group of core Springboks – including Fourie du Preez, Danie Rossouw and Victor Matfield – who have indicated they are set to retire or go overseas after this year’s World Cup tournament in New Zealand.

After the signing of Butch James and ongoing negotiations with Frans Steyn and BJ Botha, Lions officials have made no secret of the fact they are looking for an experienced lock to join their ranks to bolster their young team.

They initially chased the signature of Andries Bekker, but the Stormers lock declined because he is happy in Cape Town and it now seems they have set their sights on Botha.

The Bulls have privately acknowledged they know approaches have been made to Botha, but when approached chief executive Barend van Graan said they had heard “nothing official yet and therefore cannot comment on the matter.”

In Bulls team ranks it is said that Botha has negotiated with the Guma group – which is owned by investor Robert Gumede, one of the two big money investors into the Lions this year.

Players are only officially allowed to negotiate new contracts as from 1 July according to South African Rugby Union regulations, but there is no clause that stops a player from negotiating with a third party.

Lions chief executive Manie Reyneke declined to comment on the matter when asked but it is known that Botha has spoken to the Lions before.

The big lock is set to retire and concentrate on his farming and business interests, and a big payday at the Lions would certainly make his retirement options better. It is expected that if the deal goes through, Botha would be at the Lions for one season, possibly two.

Neither Botha, nor his agent were available for comment but Lions investor Ivor Ichikowitz denied the move.

“The rumours are not true as far as I am aware,” he said in a text message.

      Paul - 2011-02-09 14:01

@ Raymond, I'm sure the lions have taken plenty more Bulls players than what we have taken from you!

      cheriemacaskill - 2011-02-09 14:01

Flip vd Merwe is a good enough replacement

      marius.marks - 2011-02-09 14:10

Raymond - the Bulls only signed 1 new player this season - Basson - they have lost six.

      marius.marks - 2011-02-09 14:12

O Ja, and the Bulls don't buy from oversees. Let's have the other unions do that?

      vicj - 2011-02-09 15:05

Hy sal in elk geval 'n bietjie sukkel om hier in te skakel: Om in die mooiste Kaap te woon, moet jy ten minste EEN breinsel he!!!

      Viv - 2011-02-09 14:00

Seriously chrisholtshausen - you make no sense whatsoever. Dude you need to learn to not comment with shite just because you can. Lions are in JOHANNESBURG. Got sweet f-all to do with Cape Town. Go smoke another one my bru and go chill out by the beach my china. Shweeet!

      Theuns - 2011-02-14 08:58

Shows you, any retired bulls player are still a better proposition.

  • nic69ers - 2011-02-09 14:24

I agree!! WHAT THE HELL IS UP with buy all these old timers...?? Also we dont want Bakkies, he just gets sent off or penalised everytime he is on the field!! Whats wrong with some of the younger Locks..?? GOOOOOO LIIIIOOONNNNSSS!!!!

  • Hanjo - 2011-02-09 14:47

guys like ross skeate, anton van Zyl, dekock Steenkamp, Juandre Kruger, or Flip van der Merwe are all good options if they want a lock...those players aren't necessarily first choice at their provinces, and therefor should be relatively eager to move...

      Mxo32 - 2011-02-09 14:52

And Bakkies is overrated anyway...not sour and not a Bull too.

  • drukkie - 2011-02-09 15:52

it's always funny how the bulls rate themselves no matter what...when bakkies was playing for them they were the best lock impact player.... No he's a has been and one who always gives away penalties...LOL

      TheDuck - 2011-02-09 22:21

Since coming back from suspension Botha has not given away a single penalty. FACT.

  • scipio - 2011-02-09 16:56

If John Mitchell orchestrated this move, I'd say it's a good move.

  • Tom - 2011-02-09 21:13

  • Sayitasitis - 2011-02-09 22:34

If that happens; they will at least have one rugby player in their side.

  • Mark - 2011-02-09 23:09

It must be a vicious rumour, the bulls can keep him..

  • Whatever - 2011-02-10 00:13

Thanks god the idiot can’t speak English nor understand it so he cannot move to the Cape or Durban. We don’t need crims in our coastal teams. Why doesn’t he move to the Kings and join his friend Puke and his father? He will be ok in PE with his English and at least there are a few beaches and bitches! The Lions will not win a thing. You don’t buy a whole team. This is not soccer. Hopefully Spies will sign up as a preacher boy before the WC. Wonder what the church stance is on steroids!?Didn’t Bakkies signed with a French club already? O man this guy is such an idiot! What can you expect from someone coming from donkey tech!

  • J D - 2011-02-10 07:52

Thats great, the experienced players should go where the money is. At last, a true reflection of the Lions purchasing power. For years we've had our best young and old players poached by the other provinces - the wheel is turning!!!

  • Deon - 2011-02-10 23:45

Since when can he sign his name? He is a Blou Bul remember!!! He am from a a a... noth of de Hexrivier berge remember.
