Lions face scrumhalf crisis

Cape Town - Pumas scrumhalf Tian Meyer is training with the Lions’ Super Rugby squad as two of the regional side’s scrumhalves are sidelined with injury.

Ross Cronjé and Whestley Moolman, who were respectively roped in from the Sharks and the Leopards in the off-season, will be out of action for at least a few weeks.

Cronjé is suffering from a finger injury while Moolman has a niggle in a tendon in his heel.

Since Jano Vermaak’s departure to the Bulls, Michael Bondesio has been the first-choice scrumhalf for coach John Mitchell's team.

He was the only scrumhalf included in the squad that lost 28-6 to the Stormers in Cape Town on Friday night.

Bondesio might have been one of the Lions’ stand-out performers, but questions regarding a suitable deputy for him remain.

Meyer, 23, has been used as a utility player for the Pumas for the last two seasons. He mainly plays as a scrumhalf, although Pumas coach Jimmy Stonehouse has employed him at centre in the past.

The Lions play their next pre-season match against the Kings in George on Tuesday, February 14.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
