Mitchell axes Jantjies

2011-04-14 15:52

Johannesburg - Lions coach John Mitchell's patience has run out after seven defeats in eight matches – and with the injuries that have beset the team he made seven changes to the starting line-up to face the Stormers at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 17:05.

Out go lock Franco van der Merwe, tighthead Patric Cilliers and flyhalf Elton Jantjies; and injuries to fullback James Kamana and both flanks Derick Minnie (knee) and Josh Strauss (concussion) as well as lock George Earl (concussion) have led to three further changes.

Former Cheetahs lock David de Villiers, former Griquas prop Jacobie Adriaanse and former Sharks flank Michael Rhodes come in for first starts for the Lions in the Super Rugby competition.

There is also a start for flyhalf Burton Francis, and the return after injury of fullback Michael Killian and lock Wikus van Heerden. Cobus Grobbelaar gets another start after playing for the Vodacom Cup side last weekend.

“There is no place for mediocrity,” said Mitchell in announcing the side. He said that action had to be taken as some of the players weren’t playing at their optimum.

Van der Merwe’s demotion to the bench is the result of the side’s poor lineout performances in recent matches, and Mitchell referred to this first phase facet as “the root of all evil”. It is obviously hoped that the selection of De Villiers, a lineout specialist, and the tall Rhodes at flank will help to alleviate these problems.

The selection of Francis at flyhalf comes as no surprise after performances by Jantjies that fluctuated between very good and very poor.

I Like francis, no frills flyhalf with a good boot and decent hands. Needs an extended run to improve his confidence

I needs to be said... at last Saturday's game between the Sharks vs Lions, I really got the impression that every time Jantjies got the ball, it was a bit of a show... unfortunately a poor show. Hopefully the bench will humble him a bit.

      hardloop - 2011-04-14 20:03

I have to agree with you. He tries too hard to 'shine' He just needs to get the basics right and stop trying to be carlos spencer.

  • Uwe Klopfer - 2011-04-14 16:19

as much as i believe jantjies has loads of talent this has been long coming. if you dont perform you dont play, bottom line. francis has a solid head on his shoulders and what i remember he handles pressure well. play maker ? im not so sure, but the lions need stability now more than extravagant playmaking and i think francis will give them that. as for franco... the lineouts were pathetic the last two games. he resigned as captain to focus on his game more...his game went down the craphole. if the lineouts stay a problem then it has to be the thrower...they surely practice more than enough. Go lions !!!!

      squeegeepilot - 2011-04-14 18:35

Janjties has cost the Lions at least 4 games thiis year - about time he was dropped. He needs 2 years playing Vodacup to wise-up and bulk-up.

      Johan - 2011-04-15 08:21

Jantjies cost us 4 games..agree! The time Andre P played how many tackles did he miss..how many goal attemps did he miss...same with Francis...I know the Lions have a lot of injuries but changing the team will not help..this is the major problems the Lions have for 7 seasons..big changes each season (every second game)....the quality players are not happy...leave!! I think the Lions have a good style of rugby...the only problem is the individuals skills! I don't agree entirely with JM with certain players...such as Jano...I will play him of the bench.. I agree his of the set piece is good but this only happens once or twice...his job to feed the backline...he is extremely slow where Cocket is much faster...thus the backline can attack! Half of the turnovers one by the opposistion is due to that problem...cause Jano stand and look at the ball! Lets see with Franco..maybe he is right...but with rucks and mauls the guy is supperb he does the donkey work...! The Lions confidence are low thus the stupid errors..I think JM should stick to his plan..I think he is impatiant!

  • H&P - 2011-04-14 16:20

How about dropping Bandise Maku, his lineout throwing has been horrific.

  • Super Steve - 2011-04-14 16:20

I just love the fact that Habana is not playing.

I have no reason to doubt the quality of Mitchell as a coach, but I think the Lion's team needs a magician not a coach. It is a damn crying shame that the team from Gauteng has been fumbling along year after year. Best to revert to super 14. Combine the lame lions and the sick cheetahs into one side (as they were before) perhaps the combined effort could see them finish second last instead of last AND second last.

      kosie - 2011-04-14 17:03

mitchell coached the force before he came to the lions and he didn't achieve much there either. so maybe he is not such a good coach.

      Johan - 2011-04-15 08:27

JM is a good coach! I would say the Lions issue is management! Impatiance! You will never win a super rugby titel if your team has 7 new faces year after year! Fact!!! Why do we have new faces...1 Management don't support their coaches or their players hence the players leave!!! JM brought a lot to the table! The Lions rugby have improved significantly (except the games against the sharks,no offence sharks) compared to last year!! The key word is patience...don't change your players to much!!!!

  • SAFFA-CAT - 2011-04-14 16:47

I see none of you have remarked on Peter Grant not playing for us. Gary van Aswegen starting at 10, and LIONEL CRONJE on the bench. Gary has played the Lions twice already this year (the Neotel tournie and the opening game...) - Please please get young Lionel on the park early at 15......(even though he is Gary's cover....stuff that - get Jantjies off early and get Lionel on)

      molefeP - 2011-04-15 07:49

I personally think that Francis is a better prospect than Pretorius. Ok wait, let me rephrase that... How much worse can Francis be that Pretorius? As to vsn Aswegen..... I dont share your confidence in him. I feel the Lions will feel that they have a good chance without Grant there. Pity about the injury to Strauss, I really enjoy watching him play! South Africas own Chabal!

      Leviathan - 2011-04-15 10:00

Totally agree wit u. At least wen u combine to crap teams they might b a little less pathetic. Why dont they make Kockett kick, he always did so for the sharks, plus he cant b much worse than the others. Every year the lions disappoint me

  • Mindseye - 2011-04-14 18:29

Thank Goodness Jantjies is out! Im so Bloody tired of watching this kid take five Bloody minutes to kick a ball!!!!!!!!!

      Kaapie - 2011-04-14 19:36

The writer doenst know about rotation of the squad

      Johan - 2011-04-15 08:33

Maybe Francis is good maybe not...!!! Golden oldies is not our solution!! Jantjies will get use to this presure! He is going to start to shape! Can't compare him to any of the other teams young Flyhalves....except the Cheetahs! Lambie played super rugby last year...eased into the competition with the big fuss on Pienaar and Steyn...O conner start at fullback when he was 17 ...he didn't had a great first year...he have 13 tests behind his name!!! Jantjies have to start at flyhalf with a team with no bok...who support him or tell him its ok if he makes a mistake..who praise him when he does something well!! I think the Lions can take the season against the chin...7 new player...but we need to keep the exact same players and give them game time!!! Look what have continuity done at the Bulls, the Sharks and the Stormers...!!!

  • Chiduli - 2011-04-15 06:50

Never rated him at super rugby level anyway........lambie is streaks ahead of him! Just hope the sa selectors don't stuff this one up either!

      Johan - 2011-04-15 08:36

I agree, they won't select them the bok number 10 is Grant..if not injured!! Lambie is good but I will think its stupid to play him flyhalf at the world cup!! Infact...SARU and Pdivvy has a big problem...our experienced players are of form..maybe burnout I don't know whe never really develop new players from the previous world cup!! I think we should wait and see after 2 super rugby seasons and then talk about Jantjies!

  • Bokstar - 2011-04-15 07:15

Well done Mithcell. Jantjies must join the Proteas to go and see a psychologist. He also need a mind shift.

  • Matt - 2011-04-15 09:56

    Wow, that team is K*K!!!

  • Chadwick - 2011-04-15 10:46

Axes Jantjies? Where does it say here he was axed? It simply says he's going to the bench. "Axed" means like fired, or let go. Idiotic journalists.

  • roboman1 - 2011-04-15 15:45

why is the heading "Mitchell axes Jantjies"?. He actually axed Pretorius and benched Jantjies. Heading is incorrect
