Left boot costs Jantjies

Cape Town - A technical consideration is the reason why the Stormers decided to replace Elton Jantjies with Gary van Aswegen at flyhalf.

Jantjies was dropped to the bench for Saturday's Super Rugby encounter against the Bulls at Newlands, giving the young Van Aswegen a chance to prove himself against Springbok flyhalf Morné Steyn.

With Joe Pietersen out injured, the left-footed Gio Aplon has been shifted to fullback, which prompted coach Allister Coetzee to pick the right-footed Van Aswegen at pivot.

"The Bulls' tactical kicking is very good and they will be focused on trying to dominate field possession. It is therefore important for us to have a combination of players that can kick with their right- and left feet," Coetzee told Die Burger's website.

Jantjies is left-footed and with Aplon at fullback Coetzee felt the need to change his flyhalf.

"If you want to relieve pressure on the left hand side of the field, it makes sense to have a player with a good right foot."

Saturday's clash at Newlands kicks off at 19:10.
