21:05 - SUMMARY

Despite the win, the Stormers have lots to work on. They showed great composure at the end there to score the winning try and also to defend so well after the hooter had sounded.

But what went on before that looked like a horror-show at times. Too many lineouts gone astray, too many knock-ons, too many weak passes and the over-eagerness of some players.

But as skipper Jean de Villiers said, it's all about winning momentum and they can now take this into their Australiasian tour.

In next week's action, the Stormers tackle the Crusaders in Christchurch, while the Hurricanes host the Brumbies in Wellington.

21:03 - QUOTES

“It’s a cruel game. I thought we played really well. On another day we would have won that game. They did well to score and not to concede a penalty at the end there. It’s disappointing, but it’s early days…” said Hurricanes captain Conrad Smith.

“It was a bit better than last week. Very happy with the win. Nothing special, nothing spectacular. But if you told me last week we’d win by one point I would have taken it. The guts came through at the end. The Newlands crowd definitely pulled us through," said Stormers skipper Jean de Villiers.

21:02 - MAN-OF-THE-MATCH

Stormers inside centre Damian de Allende.

20:53 - The move finally ends with a Hurricanes knock-on and that's FULL-TIME: Stormers 19-18 Hurricanes.

Great defence by the Stormers for more than two minutes at the end there!

20:52 - Still the 'Canes attack... 19 phases now...

20:51 - However, the 'Canes win a penalty and launch an attack. Julian Savea barges into the Stormers half...

20:50 - Less than a minute left and the Hurricanes try to run from their own 22m line... but Deon Fourie steals it!

20:49 - Stormers win the ensuing kick-off and move into the 'Canes half...

20:48 - Catrakilis nails the CONVERSION from close to the touchline and the Stormers are in front with two minutes left!

20:47 - TRY! Deon Fourie scores after the Stormers finally get a lineout - and a driving maul - right!

20:46 - Another attacking lineout set up after the hosts win a scrum penalty...

20:46 - TWEET

Not sure who are worse at the moment: Bulls, Cheetahs or Stormers - Simon Borchardt

20:45 - Smylie concedes a free-kick for a skew throw-in. The Stormers opt for a scrum.

20:42 - The Stormers driving maul goes horribly wrong when they get pushed back by the Hurricanes and Pat Cilliers loses it forward... Chris Smylie, who is on at No 9 for the TJ Perenara, will feed the scrum. Seven minutes left...

20:41 - But a monster scrum from the hosts gives them some hope.  They'll take an attacking lineout. Too late now to go for posts one feels...

20:41 - PICTURE

Blade Thomson stopped by Gip Aplon and Duane Vermeulen (Gallo Images)

20:38 - The Stormers lack composure, accuracy and patience. They're in dire straits...

20:37 - STORMERS REPLACEMENT

Pat Cilliers on at tighthead prop for Frans Malherbe.

20:36 - Stormers into the 'Canes 22m area... and surprise, surprise... they knock it on. Nizaam Carr the culprit.

20:35 - PENALTY converted by Barrett. Stormers 12-18 Hurricanes after 67 minutes.

20:34 - Penalty for the Hurricanes as Rynhardt Elstadt goes off-side... Easy three pointer next to the posts.

20:33 - Flank Faifili Levave is replaced by Ardie Savea for the Hurricanes. This Savea has electric pace for a loose forward...

20:32 - Another (No 5!) lost lineout by the Stormers gives the visitors a chance to attack close to the Stormers line.

20:31 - STORMERS REPLACEMENT

Michael Rhodes on at lock for Manuel Carizza.

20:30 - PENALTY by Catrakilis. Stormers 12-15 Hurricanes after 63 minutes.

20:29 - Another chance for the Stormers who attack on the Hurricanes 22m area. They win a penalty right in front. Lock Jeremy Thrush played the ball on the ground after making a tackle on Duane Vermeulen.

20:27 - PENALTY converted by Barrett. Stormers 9-15 Hurricanes after 60 minutes.

20:25 - Stormers' Argentine lock Manuel Carizza penalised right in the middle of the field after failing to retreat out the 10m radius following a kick...

Barrett lines up from in front, about 35m out.

20:22 - ERRORS GALORE

Stormers lose yet another lineout. I'm counting four now...

The Hurricanes have now missed 17 tackles and the Stormers just four. But guess who took their chances better?

Stormers also have seven handling errors compared to 10 by the 'Canes.

20:19 - Stormers out of jail on their own line when the 'Canes knock on. Groom clears.

Good to see Groom on. He clears quicker than Schreuder...

20:18 - STORMERS RING CHANGES

Nizaam Carr on for Siya Kolisi

Nic Groom on for Louis Schreuder

Tiaan Liebenberg on for Scarra Ntubeni

20:17 - Aplon almost scores an intercept try but unfortunately for the Stormers he knocks it on...

20:16 - But the 'Canes are right back on attack after the Stormers fail to handle the ensuing kick-off...

20:15 - PENALTY kicked by Catrakilis. Stormers 9-12 Hurricanes after 49 minutes.

20:14 - Penalty right in front for the Stormers when the Hurricanes go off-side.

The home side got there via brilliant inter-play between Van Wyk and De Allende down the touchline...

20:11 - Another lost opportunity for the Stormers in Hurricanes territory when they lose another lineout... Three lineouts now conceded by the hosts.

20:09 - TWEET

The difference - Canes' passing and kicking game is accurate, Stormers are playing high-school rugby, pass and hope - Ruggaworld

20:08 - Stormers surge up to the Hurricanes 22m area, but the move ends with another handling error. This time the over-eager Deon Fourie is the culprit.

20:06 - A change at tighthead for the Hurricanes sees Jeffery Toomaga-Allen on for John Schwalger.

20:06 - Catrakilis starts the second period...

20:05 - It has started to rain at Newlands just before the second half starts. That should not suite the free-flowing Hurricanes though...

20:03 - PICTURE

Hadleigh Parkes on the attack... (Gallo Images)

19:54 - The Stormers seem incapable of scoring tries. They create chances, but find ways to stuff it up. Too much lateral running across the park from the backline and a lack of patience costing the home side.

19:54 - HALF-TIME: Stormers 6-12 Hurricanes

19:53 - One last attacking chance for the Stormers before the break, but a forward pass ends it...

19:52 - Barrett misses the conversion attempt.

19:51 - TRY! Cory Jane scores in the right hand corner after a smart cross-kick from Hadleigh Parkes.

A brilliant diving catch from Jane sees him slide over...

That's how you take your opportunities!

19:50 - The 'Canes are back in the Stormers 22m area...

19:48 - Barrett CONVERTS. Stormers 6-7 Hurricanes after 35 minutes.

19:46 - TRY! Julian Savea scores after a brilliant break in midfield by Conrad Smith and a smart chip-kick from TJ Perenara.

That's how dangerous these Kiwis are. Don't give them a sniff!

19:44 - PICTURE

Louis Schreuder feeds the Stormers scrum... (Gallo Images)

19:43 - A rare visit to the Stormers half is greeted by another knock-on from the Hurricanes....

19:41 - Another barn-storming run from Kobus van Wyk. He is looking promising. But the Stormers aren't finishing off their chances...

19:40 - TACKLES MISSED

Stormers 1

Hurricanes 9

19:39 - But Parkes is a tough man. He is back up. Maybe he got tough playing for the Kings in PE last year...

19:38 - 'Canes centre Hadleigh Parkes is down after he was bumped off trying to tackle De Villiers. That hit was right between the neck and the collar bone. Ouch!

19:36 - Jean de Villiers must learn to take his kicks at goal!!!

That penalty was close to the touchline but with Catrakilis I would have put money on a 9-0 lead by now!

19:36 - But the Stormers opt to kick for touch and then duly loses the lineout. Sigh...

19:34 - Attack after attack now for the Stormers and they win another kickable penalty when Cory Jane slows the ball down. "Cynical," says commentator Matt Pearce.

19:32 - From the ensuing kick-off the Stormers launch an attack in front of the Grandstand touchline via Ntubeni and big wing Kobus van Wyk, but the move is halted when Deon Fourie puts a tough pass down. A try was on there!

A brilliant "scissor" by Ntubeni with Van Wyk though...

19:31 - PENALTY converted by Catrakilis. Stormers 6-0 Hurricanes after 20 minutes.

19:30 - Stormers now attacking near 'Canes 22m area... they surge towards the tryline and get a penalty right in front when the Hurricanes go off-side. Easy three points coming up.

19:27 - The Hurricanes get a kickable penalty, but No 9 TJ Perenara takes a quick tap and passes to wing Julian Savea who loses it and and an opportunity is lost for the visitors...

Why not take the three points?

19:26 - Steven Kitshoff concedes a penalty from the ensuing scrum. Hurricanes out of jail!

19:24 - An attacking lineout on the Hurricanes 22m line, but Stormers hooker Scarra Ntubeni throws in skew...

Great attacking opportunity gone begging!

19:24 - PICTURE: Just prior to kick-off...

#DHLDancers on the field, stadium empty by #SuperRugby standards - Ruggaworld

19:22 - Third scrum of the game is a dominant one by the hosts...

19:20 - PACK WEIGHTS

Stormers 892kg

Hurricanes 891kg

Big advantage Stormers, right!?

19:20 - The Stormers are in front for the first time in a game this Super Rugby season!

19:19 - PENALTY slotted by "the Greek". 150 points for him in Super Rugby. Stormers 3-0 Hurricanes after 7 minutes.

19:18 - Catrakilis will line up... Stormers playing towards the Danie Craven stand by the way...

19:17 - The first Stormers maul works its magic and they win a penalty about 45m out. Go for posts!

19:16 - Stormers out of jail as the 'Canes transgress after going blindside at the scrum. Aplon brings relief...

19:15 - Early injury interruption with 'Canes prop Ben Franks down, but he'll play on in his 100th Super Rugby game. Another attacking scrum for the visitors...

19:13 - The Stormers have lost their first lineout. Hurricanes get a chance to attack inside the Stormers 22m area...

19:12 - The first scrum of the game is well contested by both sides, before Louis Schreuder clears to Demetri Catrakilis whose kick is charged down by Barrett but it goes into touch.

19:11 - Good start for Jaco Taute who handles a high ball under pressure and clears well. Lets hope he stays injury free...

19:10 - Beauden Barrett gets proceedings underway...

19:09 - A huge raw from the faithful as the Stormers appear...

19:08 - Conrad Smith leads the Hurricanes, clad in an unusual dark-blue strip, out on the Newlands pitch. Smith's 98th Super Rugby match.

19:06 - Stormers' 2013 season:

Played 16:

Won 9

Lost 7

A loss tonight would see them struggle to even top last season's effort...

19:05 - Not an entirely packed Newlands tonight. Part due to last week's fiasco and it being a Friday night of course...

18:54 - QUOTE

"The Stormers need to get the ball past the No 1 channel. They need to pass the ball through the midfield," says in-studio SuperSport commentator Naas Botha.

Can't agree more with Naas!

18:53 - I like the thought of Tiaan Liebenberg coming in on the bench though. He will provide some much needed "muscle" late in the second period.

18:39 - BAD INJURY NEWS FOR STORMERS

Schalk Burger has been ruled out with a groin injury. News is that he will tour with the team on Sunday but can't play tonight's game.

Siya Kolisi shifts to No 7 with Deon Fourie coming in wearing the No 6 jersey, while hooker Tiaan Liebenberg comes in on the bench.

18:30 - No doubt a big game for both sides. The Stormers, having come off a disastrous 34-10 reverse to the Lions in Johannesburg and the 'Canes going down 27-9 to the Sharks in Durban.

The Hurricanes were "murdered" in the scrums, especially early on. So that's certainly an area the Stormers will look to target.

It led to coach Mark Hammett dropping tighthead Jeffery Toomaga-Allen for John Schwalger. The other prop, Ben Franks, has kept his place and will play his 100th Super Rugby clash.

But despite their struggles in Durban, it has to be noted that the Hurricanes were up against an all-Springbok front row of Tendai Mtawarira, Bismarck du Plessis and Jannie du Plessis.

And Stormers tighthead Frans Malherbe says they won't underestimate their opponents at scrum time.

"Yes, the Sharks scrummed really well against the Hurricanes, but remember they (Sharks) have the Springboks' first-choice front row," Malherbe said earlier this week.

"The focus is on us, rather than the Hurricanes, and especially not what happened in their games against the Sharks.

"Scrummaging does not rank among one of their weaknesses. I watched some of their pre-season games and they scrummed really well against the Crusaders. You can't make conclusions by just looking at the Sharks game."

Malherbe's direct opponent will be Franks, while Steven Kitshoff will take on Schwalger.

But the Stormers must look to assert themselves in that area, and up front in general, as the Hurricanes have some dangerous back outs wide in Conrad Smith, Cory Jane and Julian Savea.
