The Hurricanes Ray Lee-Lo picks up the Man of the Match award.

13 Feb 20:56

The visitors have run out winners tonight.  The Lions played very well in stages, controlled much of the game, but could not convert territory into points.  Some questions will be asked about their tactical decisions, especially not taking very kickable penalties.

The Hurricanes defended extremely well for most of the evening, coming into the game as it went on.  They also took all their chances on offer something the Lions could not do.

13 Feb 20:53

80' - TRY!  The Hurricanes have scored on the hooter.  They won a tighthead with a massive scrum, the ball went left and Procter got over in the left hand corner. Barrett can't covert.

13 Feb 20:51
79' - Scrum to the Lions after a knock on by the Hurricanes.  This should be the last play of the match.
13 Feb 20:49
78' - Hurricanes scrum after the ball doesn't emerge from a ruck.  Can they score another try?
13 Feb 20:48
77' - The Hurricanes are now in control, they have possession in around 10m from the Lions line.
13 Feb 20:45

74' - Barrett slots it through the middle.

The Lions will need to score twice to win this now.

13 Feb 20:44
73' - PENALTY to the Hurricanes, Minnie is penalised at a ruck. Barrett will look to extend the Hurricanes lead.  He will kick at goal from around 30m out.
13 Feb 20:43
72' - PENALTY to the Hurricanes as the Lions are penalised at the scrum.  Barrett kicks out on the Lions 10m line.
13 Feb 20:41
70' - The Lions have worked their way into the Hurricanes half, some enterprising running from them. Unfortunately, all the hard work is undone by a knock on... again.
13 Feb 20:39
68' - Both teams looking a little tired now, not suprising considering the pace of the game.  The Lions have a scrum just inside their own half after the Hurricanes knock on.
13 Feb 20:37
65' - The Hurricanes with a period of possession now, they have defended like Trojans tonight, now trying to show their attacking flair.
13 Feb 20:35
64' - Lions have a defensive lineout in their own 22m area after a brilliant kick by Barrett drives them back.
13 Feb 20:31
60' - Savea toes ahead, it's  a foot race between him and Kriel who does brilliantly and manage to secure the ball for the Lions who kick clear from their 22 metre area.
13 Feb 20:29
59' - PENALTY to the Lions, they opt to tap and go... is anyone thinking out there! They lose possession again.
13 Feb 20:28
59' - The Lions have knocked on... again.  Maybe they should have taken the three points.   Hurricanes clear and the Lions run it straight back.
13 Feb 20:27
57' - PENALTY to the Lions as the Hurricanes are penalised at the ruck.  The Lions opt to setup the lineout...
13 Feb 20:26
56' - The Lions with some scrambling defence after a kick ahead by Jane. They have a lineout after a Hurricanes player got a tough on a Jantjies clearance. The lineout will take place just inside the Hurricanes half.
13 Feb 20:23

54' - Barrett makes no mistake from around 30 metres out.

13 Feb 20:22
53' - PENALTY to the Hurricanes as the Lions are at the breakdown.  Barrett will kick at goal.
13 Feb 20:19
50' - The Lions opt to go for touch and Jantjies kicks it over the dead ball line. Basic errors from the Lions are costing them dearly at this point.
13 Feb 20:19
49' - PENALTY to the Lions after Skosan is taken in the air without the ball after a box kick by Perenara.
13 Feb 20:17
48' - Lions keep the ball through a number of phases, Jantjies advances play with a sniping half break, but unfortunately for they, they knock-on on the Hurricanes 22m line.
13 Feb 20:15
45' - Lions substitution.  Jantjies replaces Boshoff.
13 Feb 20:15
45' - Boshoff is having a shocker as a kick slides off the side of his boot and into touch.  The Hurricanes lineout doesn't go in the required 5 metres and the Lions have scrum.
13 Feb 20:13
44' - The Lions cannot win their lineout, eventually the ball goes out of play for a Hurricanes lineout.  Great play from the Lions as they managed to hold the ball up and win a scrum.
13 Feb 20:11
42' - PENALTY to the Lions, their scrum has been very impressive tonight.  The Hurricanes ruled to have come up in the scrum.
13 Feb 20:09
41' - Poor decision making from the Lions as they attempt to run out of their 22m area, luckily the Hurricanes knock-on a loose ball.
13 Feb 20:08

The Hurricanes kick off to get us underway.

13 Feb 19:58

The Hurricanes lead by 3 at half time.  Some great rugby from both teams, although the Lions have applied most of the pressure. They have not managed to turn their territorial advantage into points. Boshoff has missed three penalties and Jantjies a conversion.

13 Feb 19:56

40' - Boshoff will kick at goal from the left hand side, around 30 metres out.  He makes no mistake this time.

13 Feb 19:54
39' - PENALTY to the Lions after a massive scrum!
13 Feb 19:52

36' - TRY!  The try has been awarded... the TMO has decided that there was not enough evidence to show that the pass was forward.  Interesting call.  Conversion is missed by Barrett.

13 Feb 19:50
36' - TMO DECISION! Perenara gets over for the Hurricanes, but we will go upstairs to see if the final pass to him was forward or not.  Nice backline move by the Hurricanes, Perenara ran a great line on the inside and received aninside pass that might have been forward.
13 Feb 19:49
35' - PENALTY to the Hurricanes.  The Lions holding on in the ruck.  Barrett transfers play to 10 metres inside the Lions half.
13 Feb 19:47
34' - Barrett clears from the resulting scrum  Lions have the lineout around 35 metres out.
13 Feb 19:45
33' - Excellent defence by the Hurricanes, Minnie knocks on for the Lions. They had the visitors under massive pressure there.
13 Feb 19:44
32' - Lions within 10 metres of the Hurricanes line, they have taken the ball through 13 phases now, moving left and right with Mapoe prominent.
13 Feb 19:43
30' - PENALTY to the Lions as the Hurricanes collapse a very good driving maul. Boshoff sets up a lineout in the Hurricanes 22m area.
13 Feb 19:42
Boshoff returns for the Lions...  maybe he went to find his kicking boots.
13 Feb 19:40

27' - Barrett slots the penalty straight through the middle.

13 Feb 19:40
26' - PENALTY to the Hurricanes as this time the Lions are penalised at scum time.   Barrett lines up a shot at goal, 25m out and slightly to the right of the uprights.
13 Feb 19:37

23' - TRY! Combrinck goes over in the right hand corner!  Very good play from the Lions, great continuity, eventually the ball comes out to the right, Whitely prominent and he eventually finds Combrinck on the right who forces his way over.

Jantjies misses the conversion.

13 Feb 19:35
22' - The Lions are straight onto the attack from the kick off.  Great play for them as they move through 10 phases into the Hurricanes 22 metre area.
13 Feb 19:33
Boshoff has left the field.  He is replaced by Jantjies.
13 Feb 19:33

20' - Barrett makes no mistake with that from right in front. The first time the Hurricanes are in the Lions half and they have scored.

  • 80'

TRY, HURRICANES, PROCTOR. Its a tight head! A massive effort from the Hurricanes front row sees the ball pop out on their side and they take it through the hands to send replacement Matt Proctor over the line in the corner for his first try in Super Rugby.

  • 79'

The Hurricanes are battle away just metres from the Lions line and a knock on releases the pressure. Crazy play from Howard Msini sees him flings the ball wide on his own try line, putting the tiny de Klerk under pressure. The referee blows the whistle and they go back for the scrum.

  • 76'

Jane regathers and pops a pass to Victor Vito, who is in the gap, but his offload is snuffled by Jantjies and knocked on. The flyhalf saved a certain try there.

  • 75'

Corne Fourie leaves one behind and the Lions attack loses momentum. They are forced to kick and Corey Jane hoists a massive up and under in return and chases beautifully.

  • 73'

PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT. 8-17. A senseless offside from the Lions there, handing an easy penalty to the Hurricanes. Barret chips it over from the 22m line.

  • 70'

Jantjies but the ball up and its a poor kick, but fielded well on the touchline by the Lions captain. A few phases later and the Lions have made good ground, with the number 10 interlinking nicely with de Klerk. But their hands let them down again as a promising attack comes to an end.

  • 68'

An early shove from the visitors gives the Lions a free kick, which is taken quickly but then knocked on. The Hurricanes return the favour and they pack down again, de Klerk with ball in hand.

  • 67'

Hurricanes controlling the ball nicely in the Lions half and a little scoop pass off the floor from a loose ball knocks referee Rohan Hoffmann in the knee. Its a Hurricanes scrum.

  • 65'

A brilliant kick to touch from Barrett. He has just relieved so much pressure for his side as on halfway he drills one fifteen metres from the Lions try-line. Territory is going to be key now.

  • 63'

The Hurricanes make a handful of changes as they look to weather this Lions storm which will come in the last quarter. Faf de Klerk is also on as the Lions do tweaks of their own.

  • 62'

Drama here as another spillage from the Lions in the 22 sees wing Savea racing downfield before he seemed to be taken out by Minnie 30 out. The referee says play on as the Lions attack.

  • 60'

Vito and his pack must defend here as the Lions maul inside the visitors 22, turning down three points from 40 out. And it backfires as an error leads to the 'Canes winning a turnover.

  • 58'

Now the turn of the Lions to be on the receiving end of a tough call at the line-out as Marx is pinged for not straight. A change to mention from the Hurricanes as Victor Vito replaces Shields.

  • 54'

PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT. 8-14. And it has cost his side three points too as the 'Canes make ground through powerful All Black Savea before the Lions offend on the floor.

  • 51'

But that's poor from Jane as he makes contact with Courtnall Skosan in the air on halfway. Jantjies goes for the corner but wait, a clanger from him as he kicks it dead. What a howler.

  • 48'

Soon after the Hurricanes are wrongly done for not straight at the line-out when it looked good on the replay. They will feel hard done to there as a slick line-out move saw them break.

  • 45'

No, is the short answer as Derick Minnie's strength in contact sees him hold up a Hurricane to earn a scrum on his own 22.

  • 44'

It's a Lions line-out on halfway so it should be more ball for the hosts. Wait, a line-out steal from the 'Canes. Can they strike?

  • 41'

Welcome back to our coverage of this clash from Ellis Park. The Hurricanes lead by three but the Lions will feel they have enough in the tank to claim the victory. Barrett kicks us off.

  • 40'

    Half-time: Lions 8-11 Hurricanes

  • 39'

PENALTY, LIONS, BOSHOFF. 8-11. The Lions reduce the lead back to three after a late scrum offence from the 'Canes.

  • 38'

Barrett misses the extras as half-time looms large in Jo'burg.

  • 37'

TRY, HURRICANES, PERENARA. 5-11. They have that field position and with it a try arrives. It came after full-back Jason Woodward's nice break down the right before his offload found Perenara for the score. The TMO says the final pass is fine.

  • 35'

The New Zealanders are not out of danger just yet though as despite being down on the scoreboard, the Lions continue to enjoy all of the territory. The 'Canes need some field position.

  • 33'

But the Hurricanes pounce at the breakdown and survive that passage. A defensive scrum ten out which they want to clear.

  • 31'

Over ten phases from the Lions here on the 'Canes five-metre.

  • 29'

Boshoff is back on the field after his knock, replacing Jantjies.

  • 28'

PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT. 5-6. The 'Canes are back in front after a scrum offence. No mistake from Barrett.

  • 25'

    Jantjies misses his conversion attempt.

  • 24'

TRY, LIONS, COMBRINCK. 5-3. What a response from the Lions as power and then width leads to wing Ruan Combrinck crashing over on the right. A strong finish from the Lions back.

  • 21'

PENALTY, HURRICANES, BARRETT. 0-3. And Boshoff has been replaced after taking a heavy contact in tackling Julian Savea. His opposite number, Barrett, has made no mistake from the tee as Elton Jantjies was caught offside in backplay.

  • 19'

The pattern continues as Blade Thomson grabs Cronje at the base, so up steps Boshoff from the tee again. Oh dear, this time he has struck the post as the 'Canes stay level at 0-0.

  • 16'

The Lions continue to dominate these opening exchanges as they set up camp in the 'Canes 22. No points to show, mind.

  • 12'

But the offences keep coming against the Hurricanes as this time Franks is penalised at scrum time. Fly-half Boshoff has decided to go to the corner with a driving maul sure to follow.

  • 9'

Wow. Boshoff has just missed a second attempt and this time it is a shocker from bang in front. A concern for the home side.

  • 6'

Boshoff has a chance to open the scoring from distance after one of the Hurricanes takes out the Lions jumper. However he is short with that long-range attempt so it remains scoreless.

  • 3'

Pleasing for the Hurricanes as they weather a strong series of carries from the Lions and then pounce at the breakdown. The ball is back with the Lions soon after though, on their own 22.

  • 1'

Marnitz Boshoff kicks deep from the off before the 'Canes clear.

  • 0'

The third fixture of this opening Super Rugby weekend comes from Ellis Park, Johannesburg where the Lions play host to the Hurricanes in what should be an entertaining game. The 'Canes will be eager to capitalise on the Crusaders' loss to the Rebels while the Lions make South Africa's bow in 2015. So, will they make their country proud? Kick-off is 19:10 local (17:10 GMT).

  • 0'

Warren Whiteley will captain the Lions from number eight in an impressive back-row trio which is completed by Derick Minnie and Jaco Kriel. Ross Cronje will wear the jersey at scrum-half while Howard Mnisi is in their midfield alongside Lionel Mapoe. 20-year-old hooker Malcolm Marx starts this one at Ellis Park.

  • 0'

Jeremy Thrush will miss the Hurricanes' campaign opener but Conrad Smith leads a very strong team, with Cory Jane and Julian Savea on the wings. TJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett are the half-back duo. Dane Coles and Ardie Savea also start.

  • 0'

A late change from the 'Canes as Jeffery Toomaga-Allen is ruled out. Ben Franks moves to tighthead as Reggie Goode is now loosehead prop. Kick-off is fast approaching at Ellis Park.
