Port Elizabeth – The Southern Kings will face a much sterner test against the Cheetahs on Friday night, than was the case against a weakened Bulls line-up last week.
A few top players of the Cheetahs and Kings have been out of action because of injuries. Even so, the visitors will arrive for the warm-up game at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium with a strong team.
“I expect the Cheetahs to test us in different ways to the Bulls,” said Kings coach Alan Solomons.
“They like to run with the ball.”
However, with rain predicted, running rugby may not transpire. In such an event the forwards and the tactical kickers on both sides are likely to play a bigger role. The Cheetahs look well equipped in both areas.
WP Nel and Coenie Oosthuizen can help lay the foundation for the Cheetahs’ onslaught in the scrums. Cheetahs flyhalf Naas Olivier is also capable of dictating a game with his boot.
Solomons is also aware of the threat the Cheetahs pose with their driving play.
“I think Juan Smith (Cheetahs captain) is the best player in his position in the world. He’s an inspirational player and leader.”
Kings captain Rory Duncan shrugged his shoulders when quizzed about the Kings’ pack. “We also have a decent pack.”
The teams are:
Southern Kings: SP Marais, Paul Perez, Siyanda Grey, Matthew Tayler-Smith, Norman Nelson, Monty Dumond, Jacques Coetzee, Darron Nell, Mpho Mbiyozo, Devin Oosthuizen, Ross Kennedy, Rory Duncan (capt), André Schlechter, Hannes Franklin, Jaco Engels.
