Kaplan to ref Bulls v Sharks

2011-06-14 09:10

Cape Town - Leading Test referee Jonathan Kaplan has been appointment to take charge of the Vodacom Super Rugby all-South African Conference derby between the Bulls and Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 17:05 SA time.

Meanwhile, under-fire Marius Jonker and Pro Legoete will be the referee and assistant referee respectively in the Cheetahs v Stormers match in Bloemfontein, also on Saturday.

There was one change to the SANZAR appointments that were released two weeks ago. Steve Walsh continues to struggle with a calf injury and has been replaced by Chris Pollock as referee of the Crusaders v Hurricanes fixture in Wellington.

SANZAR Game Manager, Lyndon Bray, confirmed that Walsh would not be available for the Super Rugby playoffs.

"Steve is busy with a rehabilitation programme that is geared towards resolving the injury and making sure he is available for international and Rugby World Cup duty later in the year.

"It has been very frustrating for us as Steve has been in good form and would most likely have featured prominently in the final stages of the Super Rugby competition".

This sucks a little. The Bulls' 20 point win has just dropped to 10 points.

      Frikkie - 2011-06-14 08:39

Ek dink my blinde oupa sou meer regverdig gewees het...

      Marx - 2011-06-14 08:42

True Cliff, if we can still manage a win with that kind of ref, the Bulls can really achieve anything !! What was the penalty-count against us again??

      Grey B - 2011-06-14 09:15

En die verskonings begin al klaar!

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-14 09:19

With the bulls constant dropping of the scrum and there loosies always going off there feet should be a easy win to the sharks, Bulls supporters cant stand it when the Ref is not on there side..... Stupid Plaasies.

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-14 09:50

''off 'there' feet'' ''on 'there' side''. Stupid sê jy vir my.

      Julius Dilem - 2011-06-14 10:11

Is Ace Ventura the alias for Lloyd?

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-14 10:13

@vallemj - if you want to point out stupidity, make sure you know the difference between "there" and "their". This they teach you in grade school. So, you were saying stupid....

      Dal2000 - 2011-06-14 10:22

Ace Ventura = the new Lloyd?

      ARRA - 2011-06-14 10:26

      Honest Dude - 2011-06-14 10:29

Jonathan "that was enough advantage" Kaplan. Bulls brown noser. Sterkte Sharks!

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-14 11:03

@Juliaaas & Dal. A little slow to catch on I see.

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-14 11:36

Just be honest dude! You cant handle the loss. No problem.

      Maarten - 2011-06-14 14:24

@vallemJ, was in not YOU who was telling us that the Bulls scrum UP? Now we are dropping the scrum? I have one word for you. Well, a couple that are not printable, so I will stick to one.... TROLL

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-06-14 15:40

OMG.....Bull's supporters already moaning about the ref.......just in case!

  • CliffB - 2011-06-14 08:26

Bulls are through - No Question If You Look At The Way He Reffed The Game On Saturday

      watalife - 2011-06-14 08:37

      cant agree more.

      Frikkie - 2011-06-14 08:40

Cant believe you missed the game...

      chaka - 2011-06-14 08:40

CliffB - totally agree with you, sharks will be playing against 16 players with one in total control..

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-14 09:09

@CliffB - I am more worried about Jonker and Legoete in our game against the Cheetahs.....Marius will go out of his way to show he is not 'biased' against the Cheetahs, and Pro Legoete....welllllllllllllllll, lets not even go there. He has been involved in TWO dodgy card decisions when on the sidelines. Duane's yellow against the Reds, and the Red card in the Tahs/Bulls game. This game could get nasty very quickly.....

      Frikkie - 2011-06-14 09:13

MBSS (Meeste bulls supporters Suck) - 2011-06-14 09:16

I agree, he will make sure that the "Nulle" win!!! Just look at last weeks match! No advantage... Guys offside???? nothing. No worries "Nulle" Supporters. You will win, but we all know who the best team is...

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-14 09:20

Ja MBSS, you probably mean the team with no cups for 10 years.

      Hansie - 2011-06-14 09:27

I agree SAFFA. I am very worried about Marius Jonker. I am still looking for an answer why he awarded that penalty try against WP 2 years ago in the CC game in Bfn. Where is Mark Lawrence? Maybe Craig (Blue Bull) Joubert will make sure that the Waratahs lose against the Brumbies. Anyway, there is absolutely nothing that can be done about the refs. They are untouchable!!!

      Uneducated - 2011-06-14 09:28

For sure!!! doesn't know what advantage means....cost WP the game .

      BTRX - 2011-06-14 09:37

      DeonL - 2011-06-14 09:59

The ref made at least 1 strange decision when he awarded a scrum when Bekker lost the ball forward at a kick off and another Stormers man caught the ball infront of him and started running. He only gave a scrum, should have been a penalty.

      Sme - 2011-06-14 10:37

I am sure we watched different games!!! for heavens sake old Johnathan tried his best for the stormers to win!!!!!!

      shucky - 2011-06-14 12:50

I can't believe this "sharky Kaplan reffing, automatice 10 point disadvantage to the bulls, he must now be the biggest real estate owner in Durban with all the gifts he gets!!!

  • F1Girl - 2011-06-14 08:26

Pro Legoete should be side lined because he is just terrible in his decision making!!

MBSS (Meeste bulls supporters Suck) - 2011-06-14 09:17

Pro Legoete thinks he is watching Netball or something because he have no idea what he is doing...

      Hannes van der Linde - 2011-06-14 10:47

I think he has been side lined... as assistant ref

      hardloop - 2011-06-15 07:36

Pro will make at least one OUTRAGEOUSm match deciding decision. The problem is he's so bloody inconsistent it's impossible to tell whether it will be for the stormers or this guy is a clown. this game just got way more interesting - as if it needed it!

  • Oukoos - 2011-06-14 08:27

  • The Goose - 2011-06-14 08:27

    K*k ref

  • Kok - 2011-06-14 08:28

I still want to know why is the media not making a fuss of the Cape Bulls supporters, like they did of the Cape Crusaders supporters?!!!!! It's seems it's exceptable for the cape bulls supporters to boo the stormers players, but not the cape crusaders supporters. Or do I read something else in this whole issue..........

      !!Vrystaat!! - 2011-06-14 09:06

Because the Bulls are a SA Team !! Basically it is SA people screaming for other countries. That is why it is news to highlight this ... cant say nice words about it, but it is just not good

      Wouter - 2011-06-14 09:36

@ Kok both kickers on the Bulls & Stormers side was Booed by the Newlands crowd on saturday. I think that its bads sportsmanship by booing a goalkicker doesnt matter on which side he is. I know that the supporters wants there team to win and by booing they feel they are helping there team in a very small way but still i believe if supporters wants to help there team the whole crowd should keep quiet when a lineout is being taken and when a kick at goal is being taken by either team

      BTRX - 2011-06-14 09:53

      Clayton - 2011-06-14 09:56

@ Wouter... who cares! Some players thrive on pressure and others fold...If me making a noise when some one kicks causes them to miss then they shouldnt be playing at that level... this isnt golf!

      WPStrm 4ever - 2011-06-14 10:35

Kok & BTRX - they can boo the players al they want these cape town bb suppoorters, but when they get up out of their seats to boo children aged between 6 and 12 of the kids rugby accademy just because they are waving Stormers flags they need to really take a look at themselves. That's just proof of a poor upbringing and just confirms what most people thin kof the BB supporters. I'm referring to the lot who sat on the grand stand on the southern try line on Saturday.

      Kok - 2011-06-14 10:36

      Kok - 2011-06-14 10:38

Ek stem saam met jou Wouter. Kyk in plekke soos NZ, Aus en Engeland. Die skare is doodstil as iemand pale toe skop en kry dan 'n handklap as dit oor is. Al is dit die opposisie se losskakel.

      Kok - 2011-06-14 10:38

      DeonL - 2011-06-14 11:15

Not nice to hear people boing at Newlands when a Springbok like Morne kicks for goal. When he is a bok they won't boo, why is this? They don't boo so much in other fields in SA.

      Kok - 2011-06-14 12:59

Hahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!! 2. Jy weerspreek jouself in jou sokker teorie - hou maar by rugby. 4. 5. SA is my geboorte land en die land van my voorvaders; so ek gaan nêrens heen nie. 6. Lyk my jy moet skool gaan klaar maak.

      MaestroX - 2011-06-14 15:31

Ag Kok, I think your name pretty much sums up what you are. Maybe English isn't your home language but then if you come from where I think you do, you probably read "The Voice" and hence you are neither English nor Afrikaans. I don't think you got the just of message I sent earlier, which was that I really don't mind you supporting the Crusaders, and like many CT people, you don't need to support the Stormers. What I do find sad is that you support the AB's! Is it because your "deddy" supported them when you were a little twat and you lived under a racist SA apartheid government? If that's the reason then I could understand why your dad supported them, but please elaborate for me why you support another country over your own when it comes to international rugby? Like family, you can’t “Choose” your nationality, you were born here and you are supposedly a South African, then support SA or P#ss off to your new “chosen” country!

      williamq - 2011-06-14 16:20

The funny part of the booing, is that it does not even seem to influence the kickers - I have observed that numerous times. Can you for one moment imagine what would happen if a crowd started it at a gholf match ? It bears down to ignorant idiots who have never been taught good sportsmansip. And I hate to admit it, it happens at all the stadiums in South Africa, Loftus included . SA will one day be renowned for the two worst things in sport - booing and the Vuvuzela

  • Kok - 2011-06-14 08:29

I hope Jonker sink the stormers and Kaplan the sharks!

      watalife - 2011-06-14 08:38

Ja and that will make you the biggest bulls supporter ne?

      Frikkie - 2011-06-14 08:42

      Hoor Hoor

      Kok - 2011-06-14 08:43

@watalife: No, I am not a bulls supporter. Stormers must loose, so that my team, the mighty Crusaders, can end 2nd and get a home semi. And i want the Bulls to win, because they are the only other champion side, besides the Crusaders. I dont like the Sharks.

      watalife - 2011-06-14 08:53

I would rather support Soweto Kaiser Chiefs than the bulls, but wateva blows your hair back.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-14 09:37

@Kok - you are a proud Crusader supporter, yes? Instead of wishing bad things on other teams, why not email YOUR team who once again have been disrupted with the aftershocks in CHCH yesterday. Send them a message of support, and make a donation to the CHCH relief effort. To me that is what a supporter does.........then again with you living in CT and all, I doubt you have even given a 2nd thought to what "YOUR" team has gone through, and continues to go through thousands of kilometres away.

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-14 10:17

@watalife - Did you see my Bulls take down your Stormers on Saturday?? I love it! What a life!!

      Kok - 2011-06-14 10:41

At SAFFA CAT. What do you know what I do in my private time away from News24 forum? We've been discussing the quake since yesterday on our All Blacks supporters forum. Why don't you also spare a thought as a rugby lover and make a donation. Tnx

      watalife - 2011-06-14 10:48

Ja GraemeBB dont rub it in now, You know what my thoughts are about the bulls win.

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-14 12:34

@watalife - just a bit of payback! Tell you the truth, I am finished with that game, and now am thinking about Saturday. But, I will remind the Stormers every now and then - I been living with that since the Loftus dual.

      Oukoos - 2011-06-14 15:58

      MaestroX - 2011-06-14 17:06

Oukoos, have to agree with your sentiments on dingbat "KOK"

      Skubbe - 2011-06-14 17:26

  • Gotcha - 2011-06-14 08:30

      Frikkie - 2011-06-14 08:43

  • JJVB - 2011-06-14 08:33

A really brave (not so well thought through?) decision to send Marius J to Bloem again so soon after his match fixing display against the Sharks. He better watch out for the boys on the Harleys if he runs on the pitch. Expect a lot of boo's...

      watalife - 2011-06-14 08:40

he will have to set the record straight and so the Stormers will have a very hard time.

      williamq - 2011-06-14 16:23

Match Fixing ? In Bloemfontein ? Nahh, onse Hansie would not approve.

  • Peter Britz - 2011-06-14 08:50

Heaven help the Cheetahs! Two of the most inept officials to officiate on Saturday! Jonker, will be warmly welcomed I am sure, as for Pro, well they should give him the freedom of Bloem!

  • Wooly Bugger - 2011-06-14 08:55

Add 5 penalties to the Sharks

  • Sportfan - 2011-06-14 08:56

Sorry Sharkies but their goes the last chance you had of winning Kaplan is so bias its actually scary. Jonker the Plonker and Legoete in charge of Cheetah/ Stormers(lol), luckily not the Bulls game other wise one or other sharkie would have to be sent of 10 minutes before the end to help the Bulls win, even if it was for winking at Wynand (lol, don't mess with my kuifie). Sorry Cheetahs but you guys just gets the all the punishment, I think a blind ref would have a better chance of blowing a fair game.

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-14 10:21

@Spotfan - Hahahahahahahahahaha - you think the ref is causing your team to play K@K. Saved you 2 weeks in a row now. Cheetah's game, there was no question. Lions game, just one incident where JP stepped on the touch line, and then ended in a try - boom, Sharks steal another game. Sharks are playing poor rugby, and if you had to be honest, you would agree. But, we all see what we want to see!

  • Schaun - 2011-06-14 08:56

About the refs, guys they realyy trying and yes the scks sometimes, but if ur team is scoring tries the ref cant do nothing even if he wants to turn it around. My question there is a ref, two side line refs and a 3rd sitting in a box, cant the captains maybe have 4 appeals each like in cricket if they saw something all four of them didn t c,..just asking since the ref make a choice wrong, he c they crowed boo and schalky cry baby making a flood again but he let game go on even with the help on side and in box with super slow motion tv

      !!Vrystaat!! - 2011-06-14 09:11

You obviosuly have not watched the Freestate games this season ? we had tries turned down and taken back to our goal line just to name one, other we had tries and even tmo turned it down but later it was, oops sorry was one. Then ofcourse there is the wonderful other team gets a try and the ref does not even want to call tmo and alter it is shown, foul play, forward passes. Refs can control tries. we have seen it.

      rugby_guru - 2011-06-14 09:58

Vry you going to cry to you mommy because you so pathetic in Rugby? You are nothing and never will be anything, thats why you have 1 or 2 people MAX in the bok squad because you so pathetic... your team is useless, just like you... MWHAHAHAHHAHA later looser.

  • Mrchat - 2011-06-14 08:58

Blowtheref is busy taking care of these kind matters and reporting on it. The refs should be accountable for what hey do on the field. Say your say on

      Rob van den Heuvel - 2011-06-14 13:42

Check your site, cant seem to register....?

  • Tania - 2011-06-14 09:06

Oh damn no!!!!!!! That means the Sharks are gonna lose this game.....He is so biased to the Bulls its scary......

      Wouter - 2011-06-14 09:19

Jonathan Kaplan will not be biased on saturday he reffed the stormers vs Bulls game and that was a pretty good match...I think he will blow both sides fairly and wont favor the 1 over the other

      Hannes van der Linde - 2011-06-14 10:56

Exept for the fact that he did not blow Basson for holding on to habana in the dying seconds not allowing him to place the ball. (should have been a penalty) Basson then knocked the ball and he did not allow it to come to the Stormers' side as it was about to... he blew the whistle for the end of the game (should have allowed advantage). He made sure the bulls won. This was on Superrugby last night, Kobus Wiese highlighted this so before you say it's complaints by disgruntled Stormers supporters, you know he's a Lion. It was as clear as daylight. He will favour the bulls again! Sharks have no chance

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-14 11:05

Tania, back to the kitchen, please.

      Oukoos - 2011-06-14 11:17

Go Brumbies!! ons soek 'n rematch!

  • Clive - 2011-06-14 09:11

" Kaplan has been appointment...". Come on, Media 24, your English is heading the same way as the SABC's - down the toilet. Ace Ventura's reaction to this news is totally predictable because he knows that Kaplan won't put up with their tricks (nor the Sharks's), as he didn't last Saturday. If the Stormers had had a decent kicker, they would have won due to the penalties conceded by the Bulls.

  • Gorilla - 2011-06-14 09:20

    Kaplan is class.

  • Philip - 2011-06-14 09:26

Good luck Sharks! This man is seriously pro-Bulls. Can anyone remenber the Curriecup final of 2009? He Cheated the Cheetahs (excuse the punn) out of the game.

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-14 11:06

The same guy who cheated the Bulls out of the final in 2008. Ignorance is bliss.

  • Staalbal - 2011-06-14 09:29

At least Kraplan is better than Plonker Jonker

  • BTRX - 2011-06-14 09:34

  • Juggernaut - 2011-06-14 09:35

  • BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-14 09:35

Even with Kaplans help the Stormers couldnt pull through ,and i rate then 5% better than the Sharks,Easy game Bulls by 24

  • crocowild - 2011-06-14 09:41

The plot thickens.Kaplan was the Bull s best player this weekend and Pro get s a chance to make some more dubious line calls against Stormers this weekend and not to talk about Jonker that has completely lost his touch.Only the best should have been involved in this match.Would someone donate money for Ace Ventura so that he could also watch the games.I always had a soft spot for the blind.

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-14 10:26

@Croco - you are such a bad loser. You are a joke! Speaking of the blind, you should try watching the game without those darkies of yours. Did I mention my Bulls 19 - Stormers 16? Hahaha-ha-ha-hahaha

  • Gazza69 - 2011-06-14 09:45

Marius Jonker is anti-Stormers, so watch out for an upset in Bloemfontein......

  • Charlie - 2011-06-14 09:51

Hee.. Ha... Kaplan is a born and bred Sharks Boytjie, Sharks by 8!

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-14 12:37

@Charlie - it is the ONLY way you could posibly even compete on Saturday!

  • Sofa King. - 2011-06-14 09:52

Ex Carmel Collage student who resides from Durban to handle this game. Why do I feel extremely uncomfortable about this?? We won against 16 opponents the previous Saturday, we will do it again this weekend.

  • Andrea Slater - 2011-06-14 09:55

Well... that just seals the deal for the Bulls... sadly. Kaplan despises the Sharks, as is historically evident. Not fair.

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-14 11:09

      Your parents probably despises you.

  • clivegoss - 2011-06-14 09:57

Dear Ace Ventura, clearly it is time for you to either respect the sportsmanship that is rugby, and this includes the refs. For you MISTER REF please. There are few refs , in the world of rugby, that has the presence knowledge objective fairness and a passion for this game we call rugby.Shoddy unfounded remark. Kappie started at Loftus.

  • GraemeBB - 2011-06-14 10:12

@vallemj - if you want to point out stupidity, make sure you know the difference between "there" and "their". This they teach you in grade school. So, you were saying stupid....

  • hawksnr - 2011-06-14 10:13

  • ARRA - 2011-06-14 10:22

    Agge nee nie alweer nie

  • Tobie Roelofse - 2011-06-14 10:23

Lets paint the picture. 80th minute and the hooter have gone, Bulls behind by 5. Bulls player brake free, brought down by Sharks player in red zone who does not release the tackled player and playes the ball immedately. He shows advantage to the bulls and blows the wistle. Victor asks him if they can tap and go and he blows the game off or would his instructions from up high be to give the Bulls the advantage to score to win it.

  • Kevin - 2011-06-14 10:25

I love the Sharks and support anyone playing the Bulls

  • Brannas - 2011-06-14 10:49

The Sharks never lose a game when Kaplan is in charge, The Bulls will be severely punished and specially within kicking distance for the sharks

  • Robbie - 2011-06-14 12:39

I just hope Mr Kaplan will be fair and not prejudice towards the Bulls as always!!!!! When i saw he will be the ref, i told all my fiends with me to have a nice deap look at the game and his desitions, and they will see how mr Kaplan is going to NAIL the Bulls for the smalest things, but the Sharks will get away with the same and even bigger offencis - mr Kaplan, we are watching you, this time dont be unfair, let the best team win the game, dont manupilate it with your wistle!!!!!

  • Robbie - 2011-06-14 12:49

  • Alan - 2011-06-14 13:07

Even as a Stormers fan I must say Kaplan had a great game on Saturday - probably his best. In fact the best ref'd match I have seen in years, just the result went against my team but I can't complain about Kaplan. I don't believe either of the BUlls or Sharks have anything to fear but their own transgressions and game plan execution (which they control) - good luck to both. don't destroy each other but keep something for the qualifiers the following week. The Stormers on the other hand do have a concern with Marius Jonker and even worse Pro Legoete who has given some really dodgy decisions this year especially that carding of Duane against the Reds??? As for the Tahs, with Stu (I'll make sure the Aussies get their and I hate the Stormers) Dickonson the Tahs are a sure fire win - you can bet your house and pension on it boys as this oke is one of the most corrupt or incompetant (somehow the same folks always benefit) refs in the history of the game - I think only Rod Kafer has more skew vision than old Stu'y. Stormers you have to play better and earn your right to a rest week! Go Stormers!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Big Easy - 2011-06-14 14:12

Well, lets hope he has a better game than he did Saturday! Its difficult for a player to relase the ball when the tackler is still holding him! Also if an up and under doesnt go 10m then the players in front taking part in play are offside!! As for advantage, well it was pretty poor. Got to wonder about the "interests" of the refs in many games. This week Stormers were hard done by Kaplan and Bulls benefited! Bulls probably will get the raw end of the stick this week and Sharks will benefit. I would hate to be a Stormer or Cheetah player with this current ref scenario. Well done to the Bulls Saturday - They came with a mission and succeeded - Along with Kaplan!

  • Maarten - 2011-06-14 14:20

Oh for Pete's sakes! Can we not get ONE decent refereee?
