Joubert, Walsh to ref semis

2012-07-23 08:14

Cape Town - SANZAR has announced the referee appointments for the 2012 Super Rugby Semi-Finals, confirmed after the Super Rugby Qualifiers took place this weekend.

The Crusaders defeated the Bulls 28-13, while the Sharks beat the Reds 30-17, setting up two mouthwatering ‘knockout’ derbies in the New Zealand and South African Conference.

The New Zealand Conference winning Chiefs will host the Crusaders in Hamilton this Friday with Craig Joubert in the middle, while Steve Walsh will officiate the top-of-the-table Stormers and South African Conference champions versus the Sharks match the following evening in Cape Town.

SANZAR Game Manager Lyndon Bray said the appointments reflected the best referees being used at the business end of the competition.

“The coaches are part of our decision-making process at this time of year, and since 2009 we have had their support for ensuring that we select our best referees on merit, rather than based on neutrality.  The coaches have been an integral part of endorsing the appointment of our referees in the Super Rugby Finals Series.”

Bray went on to say, “The four best referees have been selected on their performances this season for the Finals Series.  The two best performing referees are now selected for the Semi-Final matches, and in the first instance they will go head to head for the Final.

If the form of one referee who refereed the Qualifying Finals is considered on review to be better than the semi-final referees, then they are still considered in the mix for the Final.”

Just a question, why do the New Zealand guys play on the Friday................ Surely having an extra day in the build up to the final is an advantage????

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-23 08:29

Ja it is unfair, gives them that extra day for revovery and travel to Cape Town:):):)

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-23 08:34

      Sorry Isak,its Monday morning...lol

      cape.maori - 2012-07-23 08:34

@Lionel - don't assume the final will be in CT. I have a feeling the Saarks might fly back to Christchurch!

      leigh.mapu - 2012-07-23 08:58

Don't be foolish you lot, the final will be in Hamilton. And thank the rugby gods that Steve "love the sound of my voice" Walsh isn't reffing in Hamilton!

      gawie.krotz - 2012-07-23 09:04

I think its because NZ time is almost a hole day in front compared to SA time..

      danie.fick.98 - 2012-07-23 09:47

I'm glad for the Sharks and the Stormers being there and also that the Bulls is not and also no Aussies....haha.... Stormers, you have the toughest match of your lives coming this weekend, don't count your chicks before they hatch boeties,I will be very very worried if I was you,the Stormers forwards might just aswell crumble under the Sharks,no one can stop the Sharks forwards, they are unstoppable...and the Sharks showed that defence is also not a problem for them... With the Stormers forwards under pressure, the backline won't do anything anyway, and the Sharks showed what they are capable of doing on attack... this is te match to watch!!!!!!! Good luck to both teams..

      stefan.vosloo.33 - 2012-07-23 10:31

no cape, a lot has to go wrong for the stormers to throw away a home final, but with Welsh, you never know what can happen.

      jp.duplooy.14 - 2012-07-23 11:24

Its funny how all u cakes \know\ who will win! Watch the game and then argue! They both have a great chance of making the final and I am a stormer! May the best team on the day win! Go stormers!

      jp.duplooy.14 - 2012-07-23 11:28

@danie.fick.98. You should become a coach- of a flock of sheep! Both teams have real coaches that know what they doing. That's why they in the semi's!!!!!!!!!

      danie.fick.98 - 2012-07-23 12:07

      @jp.du"vlooi"... Stormers supporet are you???

      gordon.mazibuko - 2012-07-23 12:21

Danie it's chickens not chicks firstly and secondly nobody really cares what you think as you have successfully typed a whole lot of nothing. You should audition to do the Carling Cup advert as I think your pep talk would be far better than Itumeleng Khune's advert. Plonker!

      Denése - 2012-07-23 13:16

The Sharks are the only ones who would have had serious travelling time, so it is fair!!!

      raymond.romans.5 - 2012-07-23 13:55

I don't trust Walsh. He gave the Bulls the game in 2007. He cheated us out of the first SA team to win.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-23 14:08

      dont live in the past

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-23 15:06

@Jason Stop worrying about things you can't anything about, eat less and poef more, you look disgusting

      jp.duplooy.14 - 2012-07-23 16:14

@danie.fick.98. Did I stutter? If I'm correct of which I am! I said I am a stormer! So hard to understand? Think the flock of sheep will outsmart u! So rather leave coaching!

      shakes.tshabala - 2012-07-23 21:37

      It's simple, they hate Saturdays.

  • richard.compere.7 - 2012-07-23 08:25

Its stupid that NZ play NZ and SA play SA. Surely they could have done something to split it and maybe get 2 SA teams in the final. Guess its the only way they get a NZ team there. Yes I know, its the way the log works, etc. But it would have been cool. Go Chiefs........ and the Sharks!!!

      niel.walt - 2012-07-23 09:54

If the sharks didn't win it would be 2 nz teams in the final.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-23 14:10

go chiefs, crusaders and sharks! anything but the stormers!!

      raymond.dick.12 - 2012-07-23 18:00

I think you are a few qballs short of a table

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-23 22:11

      What james said

  • gawie.krotz - 2012-07-23 08:56

Craig Joubert is probably the best but I'm not so sure about steve walsh..kaplan were. Realy bad this past weekend but I think he would have been a better choice for the semi finals that walsh would be.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-23 14:11

craig joubert is a drol of note

      om.nom.nom.01 - 2012-07-23 17:03

All the Crusaders have to do to win this game is to make sure Craig Joubert pitches up. He is s**t scared to blow his whistle when McCaw is even close to the ball.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-23 22:15

      true story om.nom !

  • vernon.annandale.7 - 2012-07-23 09:29

Oh dear,Walsh that's not good news

      Stirrer - 2012-07-23 09:52

      Why, because he's fair?

      paul.collett.146 - 2012-07-23 12:34

Never thought I'd say this - I remember Walsh back in the old days (when he was still a kiwi) and thought he was the most one-eyed of them all. Strangely, now that he's an aussie, he seems to be pretty fair! Secondly, I think this tournament has been fantastic. Every weekend a bottom team could upset a top team, and even now in the semi's, who can be absolutely sure? I am a Stormers fan, but how to call the game this weekend? Sharks are playing awesome rugby, but the travel... and if they win they have to fly back to NZ... that would be a bridge too far. Hopefully Heynecke is looking at the style of rugby the Sharks are playing - whatever happens, thats what I would like the boks to be playing.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-23 14:12

i cant wait to see that wonderful smile and that cute interaction with the players with slaps on the bums every now and then

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-07-23 20:19

Paul you must have missed the Sharks vs SteveWash at Twickenham

  • mvw74 - 2012-07-23 09:36

Go Stormers you can do it!! We are very proud of you for coming this far win or lose..

      jp.duplooy.14 - 2012-07-23 11:19

      Goooo stormers!!!!!!!!

  • paul.sdoow - 2012-07-23 10:25

i assume the same reasoning is applied to the linesmen and tmo. otherwise brybe lawrence would be tmo for the NZ clash .

  • danny.cohen.315 - 2012-07-23 10:49

Flippen hell, the Sharks has had enough of this twat Steve Walsh since 2007 final ...Damn

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-23 14:14

      flip plays for the bulls

  • gordon.mazibuko - 2012-07-23 11:13

Walsh is being assisted by that man Jaco Peyper that the Stormers love to Hate and Marius Jonker who is also a "Newlands Favourite". This should be great as Walsh seems to blow against the Sharks in knock out rugby however he is assisted by 2 people considered anti Stormers? Veldsman is a terrible TMO as well. I truly hope that a spectacle of Defense vs Attack is not spoilt by headline seeking officials.

  • danie.fick.98 - 2012-07-23 12:08

    Plank

  • luke.sportify - 2012-07-23 17:53

what a waste of money, would of preffered Joubert to ref the SA game thank goodness it's not Bryce

      skinfaxi.mordor - 2012-07-23 20:21

I would have liked to see Bryce come to South Africa. Don't think he would have lived long enough to ref the game though.

  • ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-23 23:33

Joubert is probably the most confused individual on the planet now. Nothing he can do now can benefit the Bulls. Would be interessting to see how he handles the match now. He will probably favour the Chiefs to take revenge for the loss last weekend of his favourite Bulls aganst the Crusaders.
