Januarie linked with Lyon

Brenden Nel - SuperSport

Johannesburg - Springbok and Stormers scrumhalf Ricky Januarie is considering a lucrative move to French club Lyon.

The Bok halfback, who has seen more game time since the Stormers injury crisis of late, is currently in negotiations for a move to France at the end of the current season.

The deal, which Lyon is apparently keen on pushing ahead before the World Cup, will also depend on whether or not Januarie makes the Rugby World Cup squad.

The French leagues will continue during the same period as the Rugby World Cup and with many local and international stars unavailable, French clubs have been pushing for top class replacements for the players at the World Cup.

Januarie’s agent, Craig Livingstone confirmed that the deal was in negotiations.

“We are negotiating for Ricky with Lyon but that is as far as it has gone at the moment. He has a contract until the end of the season and any deal would be after it concludes,” Livingstone told SuperSport.com.

The Bok scrumhalf faces a tough task in trying to make the Bok squad, especially with players such as Fourie du Preez, Francois Hougaard, Ruan Pienaar and Sarel Pretorius pushing for one of the three spots available.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
