Jake: Deysel no dirty player

Cape Town - He has not defended his actions, but Sharks Director of Rugby Jake White insists flank Jean Deysel is not a dirty player.

As it happened: Crusaders v Sharks

VIDEO: Jean Deysel stomp!

Deysel was red-carded for stamping on Crusaders flank Jordan Taufua during the Sharks' win in Christchurch at the weekend.

The incident occurred in the 16th minute, but the Sharks remarkably held on for a 30-25 win.

They were down to 13 men at one stage in the second half when No 8 Willem Alberts was yellow-carded.

White, in an interview with the Stuff.co.nz website, refused to defend his player's actions but insisted Deysel is not the sort of player that would normally be found guilty of such indiscretions.

"I can't stand here and protect a guy and condone that sort of thing," said White.

"It's not like him, that's the thing I feel most embarrassed about.

"He's not a dirty guy, he's got an unbelievable record. He's a tough man, carries the ball hard, but I think he's as remorseful in the changing room as I would expect any player to be. It's not him."

Deysel was subsequently cited afterwards and could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Sharks' next game is against the Blues in Auckland on Friday (kick-off 09:35 SA time).
