Hurricanes stun Chiefs

2012-07-13 11:25

Wellington - Hooker Dane Coles scored a controversial try more than four minutes after the final hooter had sounded to give the Hurricanes a 28-25 victory over the Chiefs on Friday to keep their slim Super Rugby playoffs hopes alive.

Coles had appeared to be have fallen short and then made a double movement to get the ball over the line in the 85th minute, but television official Mike Fraser ruled he had scored the try.

Flyhalf Beauden Barrett then converted to give the home side their slim victory and ensured they stayed in the hunt for the playoffs, moving to 57 points on the table, though they need other results to go their way to make the top six.

The Chiefs (64) had already secured top spot in the New Zealand conference and at least second overall for the playoffs.

The home side were placed under early pressure from the Chiefs, leaking a try to scrumhalf Tawera Kerr-Barlow that was converted by Aaron Cruden, but then had the better of the next 25 minutes with winger Julian Savea scoring two tries, both times finishing off superb build ups by the entire team.

Tighthead prop Ben May, however, was then given a yellow card by referee Jonathan Kaplan for a dangerous tackle on Sonny Bill Williams, and the Chiefs used the extra-man advantage to level the score with a Cruden penalty and Ben Tameifuna try.

Barrett, who had earlier missed two penalties and a conversion, gave the home side an 18-15 half time lead when he slotted a penalty after the hooter had sounded.

The Chiefs increased the pressure in the second half, virtually camping down in Hurricanes territory, with the home side's only real attack inside the first 20 minutes after the break leading to Cruden's try when he intercepted a Barrett pass intended for Savea.

Cruden's try forced the Hurricanes to chase the game, making numerous mistakes as they tried to force the play rather than be as composed as they were in the first half, while the Chiefs slowed the game down.

The Hurricanes, however, somehow managed to get down field in the final minutes and recycle the ball continuously before Coles scored the match winner to bring the 23 549-strong crowd to their feet.

Teams:

Hurricanes:

15 Andre Taylor, 15 Cory Jane/Alapati Leiua, 13 Conrad Smith (captain), 12 Tim Bateman, 11 Julian Savea, 10 Beauden Barrett, 9 Chris Eaton/Frae Wilson, 8 Victor Vito, 7 Jack Lam, 6 Faifili Levave, 5 Jason Eaton, 4 Jeremy Thrush, 3 Ben May, 2 Dane Coles, 1 Reggie Goodes

      pierre.devilliers.9231 - 2012-07-13 12:52

Good to see SA refs can also compete on international level.

  • temakarini.mapu - 2012-07-13 11:28

Oh my god, that last try was a shocking call

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-07-13 11:30

Last week a call like that saved the Crusaders. What a game! SA teams can not equal that tempo. Only 1 scrum in the first half.

      mark.higgens.9 - 2012-07-13 12:00

who plays 4 minutes of stoppage time now days? Don't they normally stop time during injuries????

      mark.higgens.9 - 2012-07-13 12:01

I'm only sour because there goes my superbru points!!!!!!

      marnusmnorval - 2012-07-13 12:01

ANd the first try? and the yellow card?

      temakarini.mapu - 2012-07-13 12:06

Kaplan didn't have the opportunity to watch the replay over, and over, and over, and over, and over again. That gumboot in the TMO box did, and yet somehow it was still given? Go figure...

      david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-07-13 12:25

Have to agree with you temakarini, that last call was a shocker. Great from a SA perspective, but still a bad call

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-07-13 12:50

The ref and linesman missed a big high tackle from SBW close to the end so maybe the bad calls evened out? Good news for our Stormers though, a win will put them in the top spot.

      enrico.capazorio - 2012-07-13 18:41

Agreed, it was shocking but The Chiefs had their chances and didn`t take them. All in all the canes played with a lot of commitment and deserved their win. Chiefs butchered a chance against the saders so they can only blame themselves and not a TMO call.

  • maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-13 11:28

Stormers, Log leaders ? It's yours for the taking!

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-13 11:29

Thanks Bul,indeed it is,goodluck for tomorrow, lets make it 3 SA sides in the top 6

      maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-13 11:32

Saying that,Get the bonus point ! It will do their confidence the world of good

      jason.children - 2012-07-13 11:34

Here we go SA here we go! SFL

      Neutedop - 2012-07-13 13:21

Maakdie - can you imagine (IF) Stormers win the cup, it says a lot about the rugby enviroment if a team can win without scoring a bonus point. I am a Stormer, but that says that rugby is not the running game we use to know!

      Ettiene - 2012-07-13 13:26

@neutedop I am trying, but I just can't imagining the Stormers winning the cup.

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-13 14:12

Maakdie = WTF, poor guys making tons of profiles to troll with. Sigh. Poor guy, feel sad for you okes.

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-13 14:13

You forgot to change your profile, maakdiebokke.allesverloor, which your name implies.

  • Skwertno1 - 2012-07-13 11:31

WHAHAHA Money boy Williams team lost !!!! Go STORMERS

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-13 12:50

      stupid

      Skwertno1 - 2012-07-13 12:54

No @Tom.tardis, SBW is stupid, is he a boxer or a rugby player, more like a moron.... Go Stormers

      TravieGrif - 2012-07-13 12:54

I didn't see the game, but I hear that he did a repeat of last week...hang on to a ball that he should have spread wide and missed a try. He is a great player and talent, but sometimes a little immaturity shines through.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-13 16:51

skert don't be so jealous, it's really pathetic .

      joneethling - 2012-07-13 17:26

Some people only admire rugby players who have no brains or talent, dom donkies. SBW is the most valuable rugby player in the world for quite a few reasons. Uninformed, dumb and jealous people do not understand this, and when they comment, they make fools of themselves.

  • Eddie.Minora - 2012-07-13 11:32

Nuweland Final!!!!!!, gaan dit nie mis vir die wereld nie. Die Kaap is Hollands!

      lablue.phoenix - 2012-07-13 11:33

      maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-13 12:59

@stirrer, It will do their confidence the world of good

  • schalk.j.lubbe - 2012-07-13 11:32

thanks Hurricanes for handing the Stormers the nr 1 Spot BUT ALSO...should the Crusaders win in their play off...they will play the Chiefs AND NOT the Stormers...

      temakarini.mapu - 2012-07-13 11:34

Ha, Stormers might actually make the final then

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-13 11:35

Gonna be interesting results the remainder of this weekend

      ej.smith.589 - 2012-07-13 11:36

what difference does it make there will still be 1 nz team to overcome

      maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-13 11:50

@schalk,It all depends on the Brumbies,if they end up conference leaders(Auz),and win the quarter final, then they will play the Chiefs semi finals

      temakarini.mapu - 2012-07-13 12:46

Here's how I see it ending: 1. Stormers, 2. Chiefs, 3. Brumbies, 4. Crusaders, 5. Bulls, 6. Sharks. This means: -Brumbies vs. Sharks -Crusaders vs. Bulls Semi - Chiefs vs. Brumbies Semi - Stormers vs. Crusaders Final - Chiefs vs. ???? (Too close to call)

      paul.sdoow - 2012-07-13 13:19

and when one sa team fail to secure bonus point and reds get their bonus it all changes again?

      temakarini.mapu - 2012-07-13 13:37

Only if you're a pessimist Paul

      paul.sdoow - 2012-07-13 13:38

not at all just pointing out how much can change from tomorrow matches. from three to six can change drastically still . either way i think final tickets at newlands is in order!

      temakarini.mapu - 2012-07-13 13:46

I actually think the Tahs will get up against the Reds, it should be a good game.

      enrico.capazorio - 2012-07-13 18:57

@temakarini. Interesting picks for the semi's. I see it going more like this. Stormers vs Sharks , Chiefs vs Saders. Sharks will have too much ammo for Brumbies but will have to travel. Saders will have to overcome a desperate and physical Bulls side but should still have enough petrol in the tank. Once it gets to semi's any team can beat the other on the day. No team is unbeatable. Go Stormers!!!!!

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-14 01:04

no tema .. not even then would they make the final .. They've two more games in this year's SR .. thank heavens !

  • fef.gericke - 2012-07-13 11:34

what a brilliant start to Friday the 13th...now I must just win the 9 mil powerball tonight and then tomorrow, the Stormers can make it a pretty good weekend by topping the overall S15 log with their 'boring' rugby.I'll take the no1 spot over 55 tries everytime!

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-13 11:37

Want my banking account number lol

      fef.gericke - 2012-07-13 12:24

  • shooshyu.tu - 2012-07-13 11:35

What a finish to a classy game, Chiefs 2nd consecutive losses could see them finish in 2nd. THE STORMERS need only to win - EVEN WITHOUT A 4 TRY BP- to finish top.

      Stirrer - 2012-07-13 12:41

Even a draw will do the trick :-)

  • jeremy.arries.10 - 2012-07-13 11:40

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-13 11:56

I will be first to admit that I was concerned about the lack of bonus points by the Stormers but yes they dont need it.

      niel.walt - 2012-07-13 12:06

Only stormer supporters actually care, the rest of the rugby world still thinks ur about as entertaining as watching paint dry and a trophy (wich u haven't won yet) doesn't actually change that. So u guys go and enjoy watching paint dry.

      Stirrer - 2012-07-13 12:46

@Niel: I'll take your comment as coming from where it does. Not enough bodybuilders in the Stormers team for your liking? Suffering from smallcox, are you?

      niel.walt - 2012-07-13 12:55

Stirrer, clearly my statement is true as you don't have an actual rugby argument to reply with.

      lablue.phoenix - 2012-07-13 13:31

The Blue Phoenix challenge Niel Walt in a Pro Wrestling match!

      Stirrer - 2012-07-13 13:54

Niel, I purposely abstained from talking anything "rugby" - your initial comment shows you know absolutely jack $#!t about it.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-13 16:56

they still suck ..All this means is there is something wrong with the SR system and that they need to revamp the competition to favor the Rugby teams in the competition and not the NFL defensive team also playing in the competition .

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-13 16:59

stirrer you should rather abstain .. you actually believe you're supporting a Rugby team this year and the crap fest your team is dishing up is good rugby

      niel.walt - 2012-07-13 17:01

Nooooo john u can't say that, now u also know nothing about rugby, that's how it works here. If u r not part of the general opinion then u don't know anything.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-13 17:31

niel I pride myself at not being one of the unwashed (m)asses.. the more thumbs down I get on stomers24 the more secure I feel that I'm not wearing my @ss as a hat.

  • dave.short.102 - 2012-07-13 12:41

Thats a good result for WP but not the Sharks or the Bulls, Now only 2 SA sides can make the playoffs,WP in and Bulls or Sharks?

      morne.vandyk.58 - 2012-07-13 12:46

Both can still make it. Bulls and Sharks.

      temakarini.mapu - 2012-07-13 12:49

      How do you figure that?

      mvw74 - 2012-07-13 12:50

WP won't make it either boet they play in the Curry Cup..:)

      morne.vandyk.58 - 2012-07-13 12:52

Canes on 57, Bulls and Sharks win without bonus points and they move to 58. if Reds win they bump one of them out again but if Bulls and Sharks both win with a bonus point they will both be in.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-13 12:54

They need to win with bonus points now, if I'm not mistaken? Or maybe not - what is the points difference and win scenario - if that is ok all they need are 4 point wins. The Reds are the big issue - they have more wins, so if win with a bonus point force the Bulls and Sharks to score at least 4 tries to qualify.

      dave.short.102 - 2012-07-13 13:00

Serious allegation there. If you have any evidence kindly produce it. If you don`t then its slander and mere speculation. conspiracy theories are the refuge of the irrational. The Chiefs had plenty of chances to win both games and didn`t, they simply cocked it up and only have themselves to blame.

If it was manipulated you clown they would have let the Hurricanes score 4 tries which is what they will - or would have - needed to make the finals unless every - and i mean every result goes their way. So that is a stupid comment! The Reds v Waratahs game will be interesting for that very reason as there is a lot more at stake for Australian rugby as a whole..ONE.Widely acknowledged as the weakest conference and wanting to prove the knockers wrong - TWO Desperately needing two teams in the finals for that reason and to get serious finals rugby for key players b4 the Rugby Championship - THREE Wanting the Reds in the finals to prove that McKenzie is a worthy contender to take over from Robbie Deans FOUR Also because they are defending champions who were seen as somewhat lucky as they played an over traveled Crusaders who had no home games and were missing key players in the final last year and again want to prove the knockers wrong - FIVE support for the the union code outside Queensland is falling in Australia due to inconsistency at Super and International level and up against Soccer, AFL, and the NRL - they have plenty of reasons for allowing the Reds to make the final - the question is will the Tahs play to win and prevent the Reds from getting four tries or even winning or will the powers above drop hints without actually saying it that this season more than any Rugby Union in Australia needs two teams in the finals and specially QLD where union is still strong

The pace of the NZ sides especially the Hurricanes - Crusaders - and Chiefs is way above anything in SA or Australia - I think either the Chiefs or the Crusaders will win the title - probably the Super 15 greats, the Crusaders for an 8th title. No matter who u go for no one can deny the Crusaders pedigree in this competition - if they make the final that will be 11 times in it and if they win = 8 wins - there is simply daylight and Pluto second and after watching them against the Chiefs they looked frighteningly good and Carter is back to his best with boot and ball as well which is a worry for opposition sides to say the least. I think the SA sides probably the Stormers have a chance of making the Final unless they meet the Crusaders in a semi - and lets not forget the Crusaders have a pretty good record of beating SA sides in SA...Remember last year folks?....One thing is almost certain - no Australian side will make the final...They are simply not good enough. I am a huge admirer of Jake White who has shown his class as a coach with the Brumbies with a fairly untested side but winning the competition might be too much for a side who has won ugly a lot of the time and lacks finals experience with a new group of players and White is no fool - deep down he knows it might be one hurdle too much - at least this year. I am watching for the Waratahs to leak four tries tonight to allow the defending champions a chance at making the finals

Ha, ythere is no way a NSW team is going to purposely let a Queensland team spank them
