The Highlanders won 21-14 after leading 13-5 at half-time.
The Highlanders scored two tries by flank Elliot Dixon and wing Waisake Naholo. Flyhalf Lima Sopoaga added a conversion and two penalties. Replacement back Marty Banks landed a late drop goal.
The Hurricanes replied with a try by centre Ma'a Nonu and three penalties by No 10 Beauden Barrett.
