Cape Town - Highlanders flank James Haskell has been cited for alleged foul play during his side's Super Rugby clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Haskell is alleged to have contravened Law 10.4 (a) (Punching or striking) when he struck Cheetahs flank Justin Downey twice as he left a scrum.

There was a scuffle between several players immediately following the incident, which occurred in the 33rd minute of the match at the Free State Stadium, which the Higlanders won 36-33.

Referee Marius Jonker consulted with his assistants and issued both a yellow and white card for the incident

Upon further review of the match footage the citing commissioner deemed in his opinion the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play.

The citing is to be considered in the first instance by SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Mike Heron.

The 27-year-old Haskell plays as an overseas player for the Dunedin-based team. He represented England at last year's Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
