Goosen to return in September

Cape Town - Cheetahs flyhalf Johan Goosen's rehabilitation is going well but he won't be back in action until the early weeks of September.

Goosen injured his shoulder in late April when he scored a try for the Cheetahs in a Super Rugby clash against the Highlanders.

Volksblad reports that Goosen will miss the Cheetahs' first three Currie Cup clashes against the Lions (August 11), Blue Bulls (August 17), and Griquas (August 25).

"He should be ready for the match against the Sharks (September 1) or the week thereafter (Western Province)," said Hawies Fourie, the Cheetahs' backline coach.

The Free Staters take on Welsh side, Cardiff, in a pre-season clash in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Riaan Smit and Sias Ebersohn are the two flyhalves in contention for the No 10 spot.

Scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius, who played for the Waratahs in the Super Rugby competition, is expected to be included on the bench. He will be available for Free State in the Currie Cup, but will have a tough time getting the nod over incumbent No 9 Pieter van Zyl, who showed much promise in the Super Rugby season.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
