Gold defends hard-tackling Steyn
Cape Town - Sharks Director of Rugby Gary Gold has defended the aggressive tactics employed by his centre Frans Steyn in their Super Rugby clash against the Stormers at Newlands this past weekend.
Steyn was twice penalised for dangerous tackles on Stormers fullback Cheslin Kolbe, while on a another occasion his hard hit on Kolbe was adjudged to have been legal.
He was eventually sent to the sin-bin in the 73rd minute for a late tackle on the smaller Kolbe.
Gold agreed that the third tackle on Kolbe was late, but said it may have been done out of frustration from the earlier incidents with which he saw nothing wrong.
"Maybe it was one too many because of him doing nothing wrong (initially)," Gold told Netwerk24.
"For the first incident, a penalty and warning were given. I thought that was a bit hard on us. Do I have to tell a player on a Monday that he has to please try change direction when he's airborne?
"There was an incident shortly before half-time where the tackle was legitimate and lastly also the one where Cheslin was taken out when he chased his kick. It looks a lot more dramatic than it really was. Maybe it should have been just a penalty."
