Canberra - Stephen Moore has leadership ambitions but for now Matt Giteau is ''in charge and I'll be doing everything to support him''.
According to Rugby Heaven's Chris Dutton, Moore and Giteau were locked in a heated on-field clash in the dying seconds of the Brumbies' 22-14 shock victory over the Reds on Saturday night. Giteau told Moore to ''shut the f--- up, I'm the captain'' when the Brumbies were awarded a penalty in injury time.
It was the second time the two stars have been involved in a public verbal stoush in three weeks, after the same thing happened against the Western Force. Moore apologised to his skipper after the match, and insisted he did not want to get involved in a leadership tug-of-war in the remaining two rounds.
Moore captained the Brumbies in their loss to the Stormers two weeks ago when Giteau missed the match because of illness. The Wallabies hooker admitted he had a desire to be a captain in the future, but was tight-lipped when asked about his passionate exchange with Giteau.
''I enjoyed it (captaining against the Stormers), it's a bit of added responsibility there,'' Moore said. ''I'm not too keen to speculate on what's ahead. We've still got two games left this year, and 'Gitty' will be in charge, and I'll be doing everything to support him.
''No, I don't think we need to (chat about it). We sorted it out on the field, and it's over now.''
Moore and injured regular captain Stephen Hoiles are the front-runners to lead the Brumbies under new coach Jake White next season. Hooker Moore has shown his leadership qualities with the Brumbies and Wallabies in the past, and is one of the players picked first in the team's starting XV.
But his battle with Giteau has come under the spotlight again. The Brumbies were leading the top-of-the-table Reds 19-14 when they were awarded a penalty after the full-time siren at Suncorp Stadium. Moore wanted Giteau to kick the ball into touch but Giteau instead opted to take the shot at goal.
His successful penalty denied the Reds a crucial bonus point that could cost the Queenslanders a guaranteed home final in the coming weeks.
The pair was also at loggerheads in the Brumbies' 13-13 draw with the Force three weeks ago. In a similar situation, the Brumbies were awarded a penalty after full-time, but they were deep inside their own 22 metres, and Giteau decided to kick the ball out and end the match with the scores deadlocked.
