Hougaard a Stormer in 2012?

2011-06-14 22:28

Stephen Nell

Cape Town - Ricky Januarie's move to French club side Lyon could potentially pave the way for Francois Hougaard to play for the Stormers in next year's Super Rugby tournament.

Sport24 understands from a number of South African rugby sources that the Bulls star will be on Western Province's shopping list for next season.

Hougaard, 23, is a product of WP - he attended Paul Roos Gymnasium and made his senior debut for the Cape provincial side at 18 years of age. He was lured to Pretoria at the end of 2007.

However, WP may decide to bring back their Prodigal Son as his contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

There are probably two positions that will require added depth at WP next year - fullback and scrumhalf.

Riaan Viljoen may be moving to the Cape from Griquas after this year's Currie Cup campaign.

Januarie's decision to move after the Super Rugby tournament may well prompt the Stormers into looking for an experienced scrumhalf to compete with Dewaldt Duvenage for the No 9 jersey.

Hougaard will be a good option and he is also a product of the WP Rugby Institute in Stellenbosch.

However, he won't be cheap and is probably sure of game time in Pretoria next year as Fourie du Preez will be moving to Japan after next year's World Cup.

The tournament ends on 23 October.

as great a player he is, nothing will help the Stormers No structures, no brains, arrogant What a disgrace they are for world rugby. Embarrassing

      Captain Jack - 2011-06-14 22:40

LOL You must be repeating what somebody called you bunch of "Flou Nulle" in recent time, cause for anyone of you brain donors to come up with an original quote - or player for that matter - would mean that the end of the world is indeed near.

      StBad - 2011-06-14 23:31

...and how embarrassing for the rest of the SupeRugby sides sitting below them on the log

The real Saffa might be common but not this common ,Effel how is the weather in Canada?

What I don't understand is how Sport24 allow a profile to be used from 2 different sources....am I missing something?

      thumper - 2011-06-15 07:36

You identity stealing "Canadian" maggot. Are you so ashamed of yourself that you can't make a comment under your own name?

      gnus wakker - 2011-06-15 07:43

      The Spear - 2011-06-15 07:52

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-15 07:53

@FAKE Saffa-Cat - EFFEL: you are possibly the most disturbed individual I have ever come across. I have a feeling you have already been in trouble with certain authorities. I do need to spend more time online though, as the IP tracing process requires it. Dear Sport 24: Please think about upgrading your security settings, so that once a username is registered, it can't be re-registered on another profile. It is not that hard to do. How about a word blocker as well while you are at it...

      Ace Ventura - 2011-06-15 07:59

SAFFA, he fits the profile of a typical paedophile.

  • Hansie - 2011-06-14 22:38

The Bulls can have Habana back. The Stormers will gladly take Hougaard. Maybe get the other Hougaard from Saracens. Match made in heaven............................. Hey, I am allowed to dream!!!!!!

      WPBEFONK - 2011-06-15 05:55

I think this is FANTASTIC news for us to get Francois back.....

      LOLWUT - 2011-06-15 07:10

LOL - Watse k@K praat jy? Before he played for the Bulls you did not know who Francois Hougaard was. He was made at the Bulls

      BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-15 07:21

He will remain a Bull will not want to go the same way as Habana,a nobody in two years time after leaving the Bulls

      thumper - 2011-06-15 07:38

Actualy Lolwut, he was made at the academy in CT. Thanks for giving himgame time while the Stormers were forced to see out Januaries contract.

      LOLWUT - 2011-06-15 07:52

@thumper -- OOO I see - so he walked right out of the "he academy in CT" into the Springbok team then...... Sorry man - there is a HUUUGE difference between what you are out the the academy and a game winner in a Super Rugby game. I can see now why you guys cannot build a team - you think players start great .... Maybe you should buy some from the Primary schools ?

      Deon - 2011-06-15 08:04

Sorry Stormers but let me quote Hougaard from his blog Player of the Week - Francois Hougaard "Give me a jersey with any number on the back I will play there. And will excel. Just make sure that the jersey is a Bulls one"..

      thumper - 2011-06-15 08:07

Thanks for the tip Lolwut. Would the Bulls have bought him if he had no talent to start with? Furthermore, if Fourie wasn't injured he would have hardly been used by he Bulls this year. The lack of game time he has had at the Bulls tels me he actually has natural talent ad has noting to do ith the Bulls.

      LOLWUT - 2011-06-15 12:15

No Thumper - its just the Stormers that make a plan to acquire players with no talent - like your Ricki contract that you see quite upset about. THE POINT IS: He became the superstar that is - with the Bulls. Three Super Rugby is pretty damn good experience if you ask me

      Steyts - 2011-06-15 15:26

The other Hougaard can stay where he is. We need to keep Johann Sadie and play him at no 10 where he belongs!!!

  • Paddy - 2011-06-14 22:55

      Allin - 2011-06-15 07:58

Gewoonlik koop die Stormers net die Bulle se has-beens, soos slip-n-slide Habana

  • dante - 2011-06-14 22:58

  • Alan - 2011-06-14 23:02

Keep Sadie, go get Hougard back, Duvie's can shift between 9 and 10 with FH and PG being more fixed in those positions. Drop Habanna and have a party when January leaves, in fact all of SA can have a party :-)

      dante - 2011-06-15 08:29

  • Xavier - 2011-06-14 23:09

No, are they stupid, do they want to destroy another brilliant player's career. Look what happened with habanna, when he played his last game for the Bulls, he was one of the best wings in the world, as he moved to the cape he went from hero to zero in record time 2.1sec. We never seen his likes in the stormers jersey as when he played for the bulls. the same with fourie. the only time when he scores now is when he run off someone and have an open try line. when he played for the lions he created the try from nothing. sorry, but the stormers is destroying peoples careers. just think how brilliant people like deon fourie, schalk burger, aplon, peter grant, juan de jong, sadie etc. will be if they play for an other team.

      Juggernaut - 2011-06-15 07:19

Sad as it is you are correct.

      Aribs - 2011-06-15 08:27

What a stupid comment...!!!! Just remind everyone on this forum which team is top of the SA conference and 2nd of the overall log. Its cool though...uneducated and bias comments like yours make reading this forum real fun...haha. If and when the stormers play your old Bulls team again and play their proper game we'll prove to you and the rest of the Stormers haters why we are the best team in the country...!!

      Midnic - 2011-06-15 10:19

@Aribs: Are you smoking something mate?

      smarti - 2011-06-15 15:52

Well said Hougard is better off with the bulls Coetzee dont allow free play if his 200 game plan b's is not working.

      bielo - 2011-06-16 20:25

where do yhou dish up such nonsense my friend Habana came to the Stormers when he was down and out we are exporting the youngsters to the North otherwise you guys will starve from good players.Get your facks straight brother. Stormer Fan

  • Bandleader - 2011-06-14 23:26

Hougaard will be an asset to any team - he's broken Stormers hearts twice in big games in successive seasons. Stormers should be glad to have him. But the big thing is getting rid of the fattest scrumhalf in history. Party time when Januarie leaves. Let's all be at the airport to make sure he gets on the 'plane!!

      5 slot - 2011-06-15 11:49

we'll have to be at the cargo section. Surely he can't fly any other class than FREIGHTwith that gut of his

  • SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-14 23:35

Hi All We are approaching the world cup and i think we should stop insulting each other now and stand together! Good luck for all the SA teams in the Super cup, but we all know the Bulls are by a landslide out best team and will take the trophy again for SA. Make us proud Boele and also bring back the WC for us

      Aribs - 2011-06-15 08:28

      Carl Muller - 2011-06-15 08:29

I wish all guys on the blog will do this. First we support our local team, then we support any other S A team and then the Bokke. Bulls forever.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-15 08:51

@Aribs - it is a South African refugee living in Canada faking my profile..........not moi.

      rainman - 2011-06-15 08:59

@ Carl Muller..i agree with you 100%. It is such a shame when you see the flaming and abusive posts here. You would swear we come from different countries and not just different Provinces. I do the same. If the Bulls are playing the Crusaders. I support the Bulls. But I fully agree. Local team, any SA team and then the Bokke. Well said!

      Rob van den Heuvel - 2011-06-15 10:51

@Saffa - Well said. Not only do we stand a chance to be the first team to win back to back world cups but we could be the first team to win 3 world cups!

  • Marcell - 2011-06-15 05:05

Dit lyk vir my so al asof die WeePee almal wil koop wat hulle gekelder het op 'n staduim. Eers was dit Habana, nou is dit Hougaard. Springbok kleure is jou tweede opsie.

      BLOODY AGENT - 2011-06-15 07:25

Marcell ek dink jy is reg, maar binne twee laar verlaag hulle standaard so veel dat hulle in wereld rugby as Has beens gesien word, kyk na Ricky,Jantjies,Habana ens.

      5 slot - 2011-06-15 11:56

      Raka13 - 2011-06-15 08:05

I think the Bulls should take Habana back, so he can become the player he use to be, no jokes. Hougaard will fit in well with us.If the Stormers don't get Viljoen, they should invest in van Heerden at 15 for the Stormers

      Foes - 2011-06-15 11:51

Kom nou man, jou rugbykennis strek verder as vervelige en negatiewe eenogigheid.

  • Black Falcon - 2011-06-15 06:26

All I can say is...."Thank God Januarie is going". Now get rid of Habana. Hmmm, Riaan Viljoen at fullback, Grant flyhalf, Duvenage/Hougaard at scrumhalf, what a dream team. Finally Province are starting the get 'the shop around' idea correct. The cup won't be the Stormers'/Province's this year, but watch out for next year. Prooooviiince!

  • Fletch Reede - 2011-06-15 06:37

He's going nowhere. He's assured of game time and cups if he stays at the Bulls.

  • Tana - 2011-06-15 06:49

Hahahaha in your dreams. Indication from Hougaard is that he will, WITHOUT ANY DOUBT, stay with the Bulls. Go check your sources idiot. And you call yourself a journalist??????? Numbnut....

Hi everyone I don't normally post this time of the day cuz I don't have internet at home, but my cousin on my moms' side has internet so I'll be here looking out for the profile thief. Please just ignore what he's saying, i'll always just post under my own profile. Now let's talk rugby: what are likely scenarios for the super 15, here's what I'm thinking. Eventhough my heart is with the Stormers i don't think they as good as we hoped for, i'm sensing a loss in Bloem and i really can't see them taking the Bulls in a quarter or semi. The bulls are our flagship team and lets unite behind them. At least that's a trophy for SA. 2 Actually if we can win the WC

  • Malcolm - 2011-06-15 07:05

My money is on Hougaard declining any offer from the Stormers or any other offer for that matter. He has the potential to become the next nr 9 super star and could be categorized in the same bracket as Joost and Du Preez..... Hougaard to remain a BULL for many years to come.

  • LOLWUT - 2011-06-15 07:09

And out comes the Stormers cheque book again - can you not build your own players? Tell me how it is good for SA Rugby when unions buy players from one another? Why does Rassie not just buy the whole damn Springbok squad and get it over with?

  • MBSS (Meeste bulls supporters Suck) - 2011-06-15 07:20

  • vallemj@24.com - 2011-06-15 07:22

hahaha Good to see young Talent Jumping off the sinking Blue Tug Boat. Not long before they the whipping boys in world Rugby again. The Bulls will find the kukker they are , the Harder it will be for Reffee's to save there asses....lol.

  • Marx - 2011-06-15 07:22

He's been waiting for his chance to play a big role when Fourie leaves, why would he now suddenly leave for the Cape ?? If any of you down in CT can do lip reading, go have a look what Hougie said at the end of the game....with a smile.....and based on that, he won't be joining the Chokers any time soon !!

  • Sh@rks Fever - 2011-06-15 07:25

This move will be great for the stormers, however I find it very unlikely that he will ever leave the Bulls. And with good reason. They've been a very successful franchise for a long time. THe Bulls will need a scrum half when Fourie leaves and they have top dollar to retain him. Now he is someone I wouldn't mind seeing in a Sharks Jersey.

  • BardofAvon - 2011-06-15 07:38

Ridiculous sensasionalism. The Bulls plan ahead. Fourie du Preez is moving on and Hougie will play in his place. Of course Weerprobeer will want him. Just like they would want the whole Bulls team, right?

  • Witsand local - 2011-06-15 08:05

I hope this is not true. How can Province produce up coming stars through the academy, then teams like the Bulls poach them- only for Province to buy them back at a premium price. This is outrageous! The Bulls must keep Hougaard- I'm happy with Duvenhage. And please, don't let Sadie go- that would likely prove to be an even bigger mistake than letting somebody like Hougaard etc go.

  • Vegas - 2011-06-15 08:05

Typical. The Bulls turned him into a superstar and now Rassie wants to buy him. I see another Habana scenario playing itself out.

  • Riaan - 2011-06-15 09:03

I think this is similar to the "Wynand Olivier may be moving to the Cape" rumor of a while ago... its just a case of the player wanting his own franchise to increase their bid for him. The really good news from this article is that Ricky January is leaving!

Firstly Stephen Nell you are having W*T dream, Second, Hougie is contracted till 2012, thirdly he is originally from Robertson and he and all his mates are Bulls supporters since primary school. They all are committed to the Bulls even fly up to visit him at the Bull ring. Call this inside information out of the Cape!!

  • Kapnschtaten - 2011-06-15 09:43

Cannot wait for "Happy-Meal" January to go. His KFC-greased fingers can drop the ball for another team please. All you haters leave Habana alone, the man has done more for SA Rugby than all you lot put together twice. Wait till the world Cup he is going to be back on top try-scoring form by then, watch. I think the Stormers are going to have a very tough time against the Cheetas, who are playing awesome running rugby at the moment.

  • BlouBos - 2011-06-15 10:12

The Stormers/WP had the opportunity to develop Francois 3 to 4 years ago, but they haven't and Bulls did. The Bulls don't have to buy Springboks like the Stormers and the Sharks do, they attract young players develop them and make Springboks out of them. Francois is now a proud Bull in bone and marrow and i doubt that he will ever play for a Mercenary Province that failed him miserably when he was still a youngster.

BlouBos...maybe you should read sport24 a bit better. News just in http://www.sport24.co.za/Rugby/Super15/Bulls-hunting-Johann-Sadie-20110614

Rainman my friend, you miss the point. Johan Sadie is not a Sprinbok but still a young upcoming inexperience player. If the Stormers are serious about players like him they wil go the full distance to keep him and shape and develop him for the future? The could have done it with Francois Hougaard?

Why do I get this vision of Rassie showing flags again? Does he really think that this tactic will de-rail the Bulls?

  • Derick - 2011-06-15 11:57

Stormers are such a bunch of LOSERS they always have to buy other teams springbok players..at least the other teams buy potentially good players and make them into springboks..WP/Stormers are really bad sportsmen for buying springboks, why dont they just take P DIV's springbok list and buy all the springboks for once and for all...real bad sportmanship but hey nothing new that we expect from the south.

Hahahahah, The Stormers wish they have this quality player, they didnt want him in the first place, (like so many other players), then he developes at the Bulls into an international player with class, and then WP wants to buy them..... Sorry Province, like with habana, you will have to wait for his sell by date to expire!!!

  • smarti - 2011-06-15 15:42
