Cape Town - Springbok and Stormers lock Eben Etzebeth believes impressive Super Rugby form will lead to national selection ahead of the World Cup.
The 23-year-old, who has played 33 times for South Africa, has shown good form for the Stormers during Super Rugby this season.
When asked what it takes to earn the Green and Gold, he said consistent and solid performances during Super Rugby will attract national selectors.
“I think it all starts with Super Rugby. You need to perform for your franchise if you want to earn Springbok selection,” Etzebeth told MyPlayers.co.za. “And if the coach thinks you’re good enough, he’ll pick you.
“However, it doesn’t stop there. You need to continue performing well for the Springboks. At the World Cup, you’ll be facing the elite teams in world rugby. So you need to perform at your best on every occasion.”
Etzebeth added that he’s focused on playing the No 4 enforcer role in the second row.
“I have featured in the No 5 jersey now and then, but at the moment, there are guys who can perform in that role,” said Etzebeth. “I’m focused on doing well at No 4 lock… doing what I need to do to be picked and to perform well.”
Etzebeth also said Springbok and Stormers team-mate Jean de Villiers’ recovery journey has been a massive inspiration.
“At the moment, my focus is on Super Rugby and I believe we can go all the way in this year’s tournament,” said Etzebeth. “But at the back of the mind, one does think about the Springboks and World Cup.
“I’m very proud of Jean, who has worked hard to come back from injury to be ready for the World Cup. To see the amount of work he puts in every day is really inspiring.”
