Cape Town – Andries Strauss may only have the one Springbok horn which he earned against the Barbarians last year, but the Stormers’ new captain and midfield icon Jean de Villiers has nothing but respect for his direct opponent in Saturday’s Super Rugby match at Newlands.
“Andries already showed last year what he’s capable of and by the end of the Currie Cup the Sharks were probably disappointed that they were going to lose him. The Cheetahs have been fortunate to get him and he plays a major role in their set-up,” said De Villiers.
De Villiers has the additional responsibility of captaincy this week in the wake of the knee injury suffered by Schalk Burger.
The experienced Pieter Louw will start as No 6 flank and Nick Koster moves up from the Western Province Vodacom Cup team to the Stormers bench.
Juan de Jongh takes the place of the injured Jaque Fourie at outside centre.
Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has opted to pick the experienced Peter Grant in place of Gary van Aswegen at flyhalf. Van Aswegen is on the bench after a promising debut against the Lions.
“Gary played well and I’m happy with his performance, but this tournament is about momentum. Peter has settled in nicely and did well when he came on against the Lions,” Coetzee said in explaining the decision.
“We have to build momentum and there is enough time to give young players opportunities.”
It’s also not as if the Stormers are playing without young players.
Rynhardt Elstadt and Danie Poolman have kept their positions at lock and right wing respectively.
There is clearly a healthy regard for Elstadt in management because he’s being picked ahead of De Kock Steenkamp and Adriaan Fondse.
Fourie’s breastbone cartilage injury is a major blow for the Stormers this week. He made his comeback from a toe injury last week and prior to the match against the Lions last played in the Currie Cup.
De Jongh may therefore be a little sharper than Fourie at this stage. Robert Ebersohn will be De Jongh’s direct opponent.
“Robert is talented, but so is the young man on my outside. It’s going to be an interesting battle,” said De Villiers.
