De Klerk: No Super 15 merging

2012-02-09 22:06

Johannesburg - Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) president Kevin De Klerk said the current five Super Rugby franchises met on Thursday to find a solution to the conundrum created by the SA Rugby Union’s decision to include the Southern Kings in Super Rugby in 2013.

"We’ve been mandated by SARU as the five franchises to look at the possible methodology how this will take place in 2013," he said.

"We have met today, we’ve tabled communication to the president and he will comment on that in the next I assume 24 hours."

De Klerk said the unions reached consensus, and the possibility of any of the franchises merging was out of the question. "It is sincerely a tough one, but I am sure that we will in the interest of rugby arrive at the right consensus."

De Klerk was speaking after the Lions announced a new multi-million rand sponsorship deal on Thursday.

The GLRU, reportedly in a deep financial crisis, signed a three-year deal with Redefine Properties.

De Klerk said the signing of the sponsor will assist with "legacy issues" at the union.

"It will fall into the budget and we are projecting to have all these legacy issues sorted out in the very near future," De Klerk said.

"We project to be cash flush in months. We are not saying that we are not [cash flush], but this has gone a long way in alleviating the situation at the Lions."

It's a pity. With the Stormers now not being able to merge with the Kings, it reduces their chances of winning a cup, dramatically.

      jonosaw - 2012-02-10 06:03

Just a thought, the bulls and the lions are the two closest franchises so why don't they merge? We can call them the Blue Lions! HAHA

      Jed - 2012-02-10 07:04

It's a pity. With the Bulls now not being able to merge with the Lions, it reduces their chances of making a Semi, dramatically.

      Jason - 2012-02-10 07:11

The Kings and the Bulls would never have merged anyway. Not even the Kings would back a losing team.

      Leslie - 2012-02-10 07:46

And here i was looking forward to the blue lions or the blue kings playing on nuweland

      hvanderlinde - 2012-02-10 08:00

Ken, as jy bietjie wakkerder was sou jy geweet het Saffa is 'n Stormer supporter.

      Mielie - 2012-02-10 08:16

Pragtig gestel my mede Transvaalse boorling

      Mielie - 2012-02-10 08:17

Ek sal betaal vir Ken Jay May Ma se sielkundige behandeling. Die seunie het die tipping point bereik

      Shistirrer - 2012-02-10 09:14

Sharrup liewers net, selfs jou mede-mielierollers sal dit waardeer.

      Saffa - 2012-02-10 10:14

@Ken Jay May - dude. Call me a ladyboy, a tart, a whore if you have to - but DON'T call me a Bulls fan..........

      Brannas - 2012-02-10 10:33

Saffa the Blue Bull Ladyboy, Priceless, You must have craped in your best panty when you read this Saffa. The mentality of the stormer supporter is just to much, Hahahahah.

      Saffa - 2012-02-10 10:36

@Brannas - there is no greater insult on this earth, than to be called a Bulls fan. In fact, I need Lithium to pull me through the pain this statement of Ken's has caused. As I have said before, call me anything you want, but call me a Bulls fan, and I will institute civil action - I will not have my dignity attacked in that manner.

      Brannas - 2012-02-10 10:43

Saffa, Seriously, that comment made my day, I cannot stop laughing, and I am not saying this to be nasty, Ken Jay May ken nie eers wie is aan sy kant nie,

      Bulldozer - 2012-02-10 13:07

      Dankie Mielie.

  • Anneleen - 2012-02-09 22:13

Good to read the Lions have been redefined. What are the "legacy issues" mentioned? Well, looking forward to the first "merger" between Sharks and Bulls on 24/02/2012. Bulldozer, waar is jy met jou gewoonlik eerste "chirp"?

      Bulldozer - 2012-02-09 22:15

      Reg bo jou. Nog iets?

      Anneleen - 2012-02-09 22:29

@Bulldozer...nog iets? Nee, dankie...stuur net groete vir jou kaptein.

      Bulldozer - 2012-02-09 22:32

Sal, dankie. Groete by die huis.

      Marius - 2012-02-10 01:22

This sponsor is a property company. The Lions probably had to put up the Ellis Park property as colateral to get the money.

  • Nico - 2012-02-09 22:26

still say the kings won't make it to the super15 next year. the broadcasters that bought the tv rights for hundreds of millions of dollars won't allow the competition to be undermined by an inferior team. they are going to loose too much money. saru will walk out clean as they tried and they were overruled. good move from them and hopefully this will end the whole saga!

      Marius - 2012-02-10 01:25

The Lions have been an inferior team in the competition for the last 10 years, so what will change?

      Deon - 2012-02-10 08:55

Let us hope Saru comes to theire senses, although the other 4 teams left won't mind to play the Kings twice a year. No one of the other 5 teams deserves to go out.

      Shistirrer - 2012-02-10 09:16

They don't mind inferior teams. After all, they allowed the Bulls to play last year, didn't they?

      Juan - 2012-02-10 09:20

      Nico - 2012-02-10 10:53

@Marius, lets see what has changed at the Lions, a new coaching staff and a new management, last year at the end of the super15 the Lions started winning overseas, they won the CC, something they couldn't do in 2007 even though it were the same scenario with weakened opposition. It is not that they won the CC, but in the emphatic way they did win it. For the first time in years they haven't lost any of their starting 22 players, and gained some good new ones. What change at the Kings/Spears/Whatevers ?? o yeah, still empty promises and still b-division, now THAT is lots of changes :)

  • Bootman - 2012-02-09 22:44

Please!!!!! No mergers. The Bulls will end last and be kicked out. A merger will only deprive the rest of the country of that pleasure. The other positive is, there is no way a bok captain will be chosen from the Vodacom Cup.

      michael.kazantjis - 2012-02-09 23:00

You can dream as much as you want, but come 2013 the Bulls will still be in the competition and kicking butt. Fourie du Preez is the Bok's new Captain. Get used it mate.

      Jason - 2012-02-10 07:12

Bulls will likely be relegated by the end of this year.

      Saffa - 2012-02-10 10:24

@Bootman - I don't want the Bulls to be relegated...It is far more entertaining watching them shame themselves week in and week out in the big leagues.....(its televised!) If they slide down the pole, we won't get to see them play. Another decision I came to after a few of us were discussing all the "blue tinged BS" already coming from Heyneke Meyer's mouth, is the following: Let them be...Let him select du Preez as Bok cappie (when he knows all 2 well du Preez couldn't even captain the Bulls....2008 anyone?)....Let him stick with Spies at 8.....Let him have Morne at 10, Hell, let him throw Meisie in at 12 as well for all I care....... BUT: when things go wrong - as they inevitably WILL with those chaps, Heyneke will suddenly realise he that isn't in frikkin Kansas (tswane) anymore, and that the rest of the country are not as obsessed with him as what the Tswaneerders are. My honest opinion: (and I do like and respect Meyer) is that the external pressure from other parts of the country will freak him out.

  • Patrick - 2012-02-10 03:49

for a team that hasnt even made the top half of the super rugby competition in close to ten years, they sure make alot of noise!!!

  • Vernon - 2012-02-10 07:37

So sad the Lions over rate themselves so much .... they played absolute rubbish in Super Rugby , then won a downgraded Currie Cup in which very few Springboks played which weakened all other teams except the Lions as they had so few Bok players .... and then they just managed to beat a Sharks team made up of physically and mentally exhausted Springboks .... speak after 2012 season Pussycats .... and maybe you'll merge with Griquas !!!

      Denzil - 2012-02-10 07:56

Just managed to beat the sharks. I geuss you weren't in the country that day. It was more like a hiding.!!!!

      Juan - 2012-02-10 09:23

@Vernon. Jy is reg ja ons sal weer praat!!!

      Johan - 2012-02-10 09:43

      Johan - 2012-02-10 10:28

      Selma - 2012-02-10 12:01

Being a Currie Cup holder does not count for much in the Super 15 and is not a guarantee for success. In the last decade and a bit the Cheetas, Blue Bulls, and Sharks have been title holders and or finalists in the Currie Cup and all of them struggle in the Super 1215. After the Transvaal win of the Super 10 fans had to endure 12 years of agony before the title came home. The Stormers reached a final, the Sharks and Bulls reached a final 3 times, the Bulls winning 3. The Cheetas have never reached a semi-final. The Super 12 should be made up of 3 SA, NZ and OZ sides and 1 Samoa, 1 Argentina, and 1 Fuji or Japanse side. Sharks (Freesate and KZN), Stormers (EP, Boland, NC and WP, and Bulls (Gauteng, North West and Pumalanga). The Super 15 sucks.

  • Petrus - 2012-02-10 07:52

Vernon, when last did your team win anything? If memory serves me right, WP (semi final) and the Sharks (final), were close to full strength and the Guppies still got hit by a train.

      Vernon - 2012-02-10 09:37

Both Stormers and Sharks have 15 players on field exhausted and drained from World Cup while the Lions were too useless to give much to the Bok team so could keep fresh and full strength against teams afr below their best ..... Super rugby this year Lions will see their gat again , as well as Currie Cup up against full strength teams ... they only did something Iin Currie Cup once other provinces had to give up Boks ..... and maybe the Kings haven't won anything yet ....but they have at last been given a chance to sign a sponsor and compete for players to contract for 2013 .... against teams like Lions who represent the richest province in the country yet they go bankrupt ..... good start to the year !!!

      Juan - 2012-02-10 09:46

Hy is n wanna be champion!!!

      Johan - 2012-02-10 10:44

@Vernon.

Skoert kereltjie

      Shistirrer - 2012-02-10 09:18
