Days numbered for Os?

Hendrik Cronjé

Bloemfontein – There is no guarantee that Os du Randt will be the Springboks’ scrum coach during this year’s World Cup in New Zealand.

Sport24 understands that certain teams in the World Cup, as well as wealthy European sides, are waiting to hear whether Springbok coach Peter de Villiers will extend DuRandt's contract as scrum coach.

If the extension fails to materialise, Du Randt may join an overseas side after this year’s Super Rugby competition. He does not currently have a contract with the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

However, he will be the Cheetahs’ scrumming consultant during the competition.

The former Bok prop could not be reached on Tuesday, but an informed source confirmed to Sport24 that there was major doubt about his continued involvement with the Boks.

Du Randt is apparently well aware of the interest in his services from a number of overseas sides, but is not seriously considering any of the offers. It is believed that he would like to get clarity from De Villiers on whether he is part of his World Cup plans.

If that is the case, Du Randt is set to reject all other offers as his goal is to help the Boks successfully defend the World Cup. Du Randt twice held the World Cup aloft as a player.

De Villiers called in Du Randt’s help after the disastrous European tour of 2009. The Boks were poor in the scrums then and Du Randt’s involvement has had the desired effect since last year’s Tri-Nations.

The Boks’ scrumming on last year’s end-of-season tour was testimony to the improvement that his involvement had brought about.

Shimlas, who beat Maties in the Varsity Cup on Monday night, have also benefited from Du Randt’s involvement.

It’s still uncertain when De Villiers and Saru will make a final decision on Du Randt and the Bok management.
