Brumbies star joins Waratahs

Canberra - Adam Ashley-Cooper has just told his Brumbies team-mates he will quit the club at the end of the season and join arch-rivals the Waratahs on a two-year deal.

After two months of uncertainty, Ashley-Cooper finally told the club this morning. He addressed his teammates shortly after 10am, explaining his reasons for departing.

His reasons are believed to be personal, relating to his family and his Sydney-based girlfriend. He also cited a desire for change.

He made his debut for the Brumbies in 2005 and has played 71 Super Rugby matches for the club. He made his Test debut against the Springboks in 2005 and has become a key Wallaby with 51 Test caps.

He joins the already star-studded Waratahs back line, which includes Wallabies Kurtley Beale, Drew Mitchell, Lachy Turner, Rob Horne, Ryan Cross and Berrick Barnes.

The Brumbies will be deeply disappointed by his decision, believing they offered him an excellent deal to remain in Canberra.

Chief executive Andrew Fagan is understood to have played a major role in securing Ashley-Cooper's big-money deal that fended off the interest of French clubs.

Ashley-Cooper will appear at a press conference late this afternoon to publicly explain his decision.

The only positive spin the Brumbies can take from his decision will be that it may allow him to shake off the uncertainty that appears to have been dogging his on-field performances.
