Cipriani out Rebels' SA tour

Melbourne - English star Danny Cipriani's future with the Melbourne Rebels looked increasingly uncertain Sunday after he was left out of the extended squad for the two-match Super Rugby tour to South Africa.

Cipriani's season hit a new low after he was omitted from the 26-man squad for the trip to play the Bulls in Pretoria and Cheetahs in Bloemfontein in the next fortnight.

The 23-year-old Cipriani was stood down from Friday's 33-18 loss to the Reds along with team-mate Richard Kingi after disobeying a team directive with a late night-out in Sydney.

Kingi has been recalled for the South Africa trip but Cipriani will not be with him after discussions on Saturday.

"Following meetings between the Rebels players, coaches and management, it has been decided that Danny Cipriani will not travel to South Africa," said the Rebels in a statement on Sunday.

"Danny will train with the other non-touring players over the next two weeks and will continue his community engagement with local clubs and schools during this time."

It means that Cipriani will have only three games left this season to play for the Rebels.

Cipriani was in trouble earlier in his time with the competition newcomers and fined by the club for a nightclub incident in February.

On that occasion, the flyhalf was fined one match payment after appearing before the Rebels' players standards group for taking a bottle of vodka from a Melbourne nightclub.
