Cheetahs confident ahead of Bulls duel

    2015-03-04 10:00

Bloemfontein - Cheetahs fullback Willie le Roux says his team-mates are in a positive mood ahead of their Super Rugby derby against the Bulls here on Saturday.

The Cheetahs have a disappointing Super Rugby record against the Bulls.

Since 2006, the Cheetahs have only won one out of 13 games against the Bulls, which was a 15-9 win in Bloemfontein last year. However, the Free State franchise will go into this season’s derby in high spirits.

The Cheetahs have won both their matches after the opening three rounds in 2015, beating the Sharks 35-29 in Durban and the Blues 25-24 in Bloemfontein.

Le Roux said their performances have been very encouraging.

“(sic) A few areas we worked hard on during the pre-season is our defence and kicking game. The improvements in those areas have really made for us this season,” Le Roux told

“Our attack has always been good… the Cheetahs love attacking rugby, so with the step-up in our defence and kicking game, we have a more balanced game plan on the field.

“We are now winning those close games we’d usually end up losing. So the guys are growing in confidence, which is important going into our match against the Bulls this weekend.”

Le Roux believes the Cheetahs can improve their Super Rugby record against the Bulls with consistency.

“If we continue improving as a team and build on our current momentum, we will definitely put up a big challenge. We’re definitely going for the win this weekend,” said Le Roux.

“South African Super Rugby derbies are always tough and physical, but if we stick to our structures, we will put ourselves in a strong position.”

Kick-off for Saturday's clash at the Free State Stadium is scheduled for 17:05.
