Bloemfontein – If the Cheetahs can continue to keep the ball in hand as well as they did against the Southern Kings on Friday, they will be a force to be reckoned with in this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby competition.
That is the view of Cheetahs’ Springbok inside centre, Andries Strauss, following the 45-17 win over the Kings in Port Elizabeth.
“We succeeded in keeping the ball for long and did not kick it away aimlessly. It meant that we did most of the playing and did not have to work so hard.”
The Cheetahs scored seven tries against the Kings and that will give Strauss and his team-mates the confidence to deploy similar tactics in Super 15.
“Some of the combinations that were tried out against the Kings worked out well and we can feel quite satisfied at this stage.
"Something we told one another afterwards is that we will be playing against a much stronger team (the Sharks) in Durban on 19 February,” said Strauss.
“We have a lot of hard work to do, especially with regards to our set phases.”
Strauss was happy with his first performance back in a Cheetahs jersey after having moved to Bloemfontein from the Sharks.
“It went reasonably well and was not difficult for me to slot in. I did not complete the match as a precautionary measure because of cramp, but did not experience any discomfort from my groin injury.”
Strauss has to fill the void left by Meyer Bosman who has moved to Durban and Cheetahs supporters are looking forward to the improvement that his powerful tackling can bring about in the midfield.
He and Robert Ebersohn were the centre pairing against the Kings and the same combination is likely to play against the Sharks.
Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské said that he was satisfied with the performance of Strauss.
“He was one of our key players that was injured and got his opportunity against the Kings. I am also happy that players like Hennie Daniller (fullback), Philip Burger (wing) and Frans Viljoen (flank) played well after the injuries,” said Drotské.
“The manner in which we played against the Kings in the first 30 minutes gives me a lot of hope for the season ahead. We probably made too many changes at half-time, but generally I’m happy.”
The Cheetahs are not planning any further warm-up games before the match against the Sharks, but may play against the Free State Vodacom Cup team in training.
Meanwhile, Springbok hooker Adriaan Strauss is expected to join up with the Cheetahs again on Monday after being on honeymoon last week and missing the match against the Kings.
