Carstens set to tackle Bulls

2012-05-30 07:36

Cape Town - Deon Carstens is expected to be named as the Stormers loosehead prop for their Super Rugby derby against the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

Carstens will replace the injured Steven Kitshoff, who is with the Baby Boks preparing for the IRB Junior World Championships.

According to Die Burger, Carstens's inclusion is one of two expected changes from the team that lost 25-20 to the Sharks in Durban last week.

The other is the return of Siya Kolisi at flank in place of Deon Fourie. Kolisi was a late withdrawal from the match at the Shark Tank when he failed to sufficiently recover from a shoulder niggle.

Lock Eben Etzebeth, who left the field as a precautionary measure last week, should also start against the Bulls.

The Stormers were unhappy with the fact that Kitshoff was not allowed to play but forwards coach Matthew Proudfoot said they have faith in Carstens's abilities.

"The situation with Steven is not ideal, but Deon has always been part of our group and toured with us overseas. So he knows what we expect," said Proudfoot.

The clash at Loftus kicks off at 19:10 on Saturday evening.

WOW i feel for this guy he has had zero game time and now he is expected to front up in the toughest game of the year! Stormers Bulls at a sold out Loftus......................mouth waters at the prospect! Stormers 4 Life!

      René - 2012-05-30 07:50

Hi Jason, agree! I doubt he will be match fit and then coming to the highveld, will be tough on the guy. Why does the article state that Kitshoff is 'injured' joining the baby boks??? Or is it just once again poor journalism??

      Jason - 2012-05-30 07:56

Steven is not injured! Thats a typo! but Ja, Deon is really going to struggle. He is not a bad scrummager but i think the guys are going to have to pic up his slack later in the game! It is what it is and we will have to work through it!

      Jed - 2012-05-30 08:07

I think Deons experience will pull him through. Although he has not played allot this year his played over 70 games for the Sharks.

      LaBlue - 2012-05-30 08:48

Didn't Carstens play in the Vodacom Cup? Doubt he'll be unfit ...

      aubrey.gloster - 2012-05-30 08:50

WOW I dont feel for this guy as he was stupid enough to sign for the knockout phase chokers of the millenium. Ha ha ha ha ha ha

      LaBlue - 2012-05-30 09:05

      LaBlue - 2012-05-30 10:20

      Haha, fair enough.

      Bossie - 2012-05-30 12:39

gloster- Aaaaahahahaha- jy weet dat jy eintlik n moer sad case is! Jou span is useless en nou probeer jy aandag soek en stir tussen die bulls en stormers supporters. what a IDIOT!!

  • dave.reyneke - 2012-05-30 07:57

Rene, It is poor journalism...He was called up to the Junior Boks camp and AC failed to "make a deal" with Dawie Theron and the selectors In the mean time...Saturday's gonna be big! Bulls Greetings

      Jason - 2012-05-30 08:02

AC and DT originally had a deal that would benefit both teams! Steven plays on Saturday and sits out the first game against Ireland (that we should easily win) then he is available for the rest! DT decided at the last minute that as we are hosting the tournament he doesnt want to take any chances, so Steven goes! No one at fault, both coaches want whats best for their teams!

      Jason - 2012-05-30 08:38

To the trolls who give thumbs down to a factual comment, rather explain to me why my statement is incorrect!! Idiots!!! lol!

      René - 2012-05-30 08:52

@Jason, hahaha, I doubt people actually read some of the comments. I could NOT care less about up/down thumbs... Sometimes or most of the time its just an indication that there are too many 'brain dead' people on the blogs. LoL

      René - 2012-05-30 09:25

Jason I think people don't agree with you, because it is not about a 'deal between AC/DT' but rather what is formulated in the regulations e.g. In terms of the SA Rugby Union's (SARU) latest regulations, the Baby Boks have first call on the player's services..... etc (I think AC wanted Kitshoff at all cost)

      Jason - 2012-05-30 09:31

@Rene, the law states the baby boks have first choice but the coaches make the final decision and DT originally agreed a deal with AC on principal. He then changed his mind...........its no biggy I cant wait to watch Steven scrum against those other youngsters!!!

      René - 2012-05-30 10:00

Geez one almost feel sorry for them. Kitshoff is 'n YSTER - the frightening thing is, these forwards tend to get better with age. Hectic

  • Hans - 2012-05-30 07:58

What a fantastic guy on and off the field. Sadly i think it's another player that moved to the Stormers and in doing so has faded away.

      René - 2012-05-30 08:09

@Hans, Deon is 33 years old, moving to the Stormers was the right thing to do - LOL!!

      Jason - 2012-05-30 08:25

He moved to England and then to the Stormers!

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-30 12:01

Mmm Rene, closer to his hometown and riding off to retire..and now for BJ Botha. I think Rob Wagner must be busy on that deal already!!!!

  • steyts - 2012-05-30 08:14

Only two changes??? So Joe Pietersen is still not ready??? In other words that pathetic Gerhard van der Heever will play again... I am a stormers supporter but I should have gone with the bulls by 30+ on my superbru. If he (Gerhard) plays then we are screwed!!!

      René - 2012-05-30 08:35

@steyts, oh man, I am sooo happy we got rid of GvdH. He always look half asleep, never gets involved etc. Sad really, he has extreme pace and uncatchable on 'full speed'. But I will always have a 'soft spot' for the guy, remembering that tackle on Luke Watson at Loftus and Luke's facial expression - PRICELESS!!!!

      paul.sdoow - 2012-05-30 09:20

steyts have to agree it seems vdh is not on pace or form was actually excited when stormers bought him thinking a big wing with pace would help but alas . why not put poolman in rather ? at least he been on form!

      steyts - 2012-05-30 10:06

The only thing I remember of Gerhard van den Heever is the horrendous game he had last weekend!!!!!

      Bossie - 2012-05-30 10:56

  • Edward - 2012-05-30 08:28

Poor guy, this really sucks, AC needs to learn to manage players and to rotate them, then Carstens would have been match fit and we would not have been so reliant on young Kitshoff. And adding to the recall of Pieter Louw,WP sucks when it comes to holding on players, then they want to recall players that left and players that were not deemed good enough last year, they should have learnt from last years mistakes when they recalled "twinkel toes" from England. AC should rotate and contract correctly from the beginning of the season, it will make for good competition inside the squad.

      Jason - 2012-05-30 08:40

Edward AC could never have foreseen 5 loosies being injured! I doubt he is allowed to contract as many players as he wants!

  • aubrey.gloster - 2012-05-30 08:49

Stop looking for excuses. The Bulls are going to bludgeon the Stereotype Stormers.Ha ha ha ha ha ha aha ha ha

      Jed - 2012-05-30 08:59

Stormers have beaten the Bulls more times than the Bulls have beaten the Stormers. LOSER..........hahahahahaha

      paul.sdoow - 2012-05-30 09:28

o we ain't looking for excuses we just pointing out that once we show other teams how to win at moftus with a weaker team any one can. and if i recall the excuses are more on the bulls side go read the article on the ref kaplan and count the bull supporters excuses. the stormers will play with any ref except two . bryce and dickens . but i think all sa sides feel that way about those two? its only the bulls that have a problem with every ref

      paul.sdoow - 2012-05-30 10:19

o touche raven . irrespective of what team we support it will be the most watched game of the season . cause after this its all easy games for stormer where you guys need to negotiate the sharks in dbn or you also targeting this hand and take it easy for them?

      PienkMasjien - 2012-05-30 10:51

      Bossie - 2012-05-30 10:59

gloster- miskien moet jy maar liewer by die lions artikels (as daar weer een kom) iets post

  • paul.ramncwana - 2012-05-30 09:06

Not happy at all with the decision by SARU bt we need to move on. Carstens the games i have watched him play this season he was really poor. I hpe he plays out of his skin for his sake and more importantly for the STORMERS. STORMERS by 10!!!

  • Dewald - 2012-05-30 09:10

Eish, bulls better be up for this one. Stormers might have targeted this game. The bulls had a long flight back. Hopefully they are feeling fresh being back at Loftus waar dit vol is en dit rof is! Come on boys. 1 point win is enough for me

      Paul - 2012-05-30 10:10

Don't worry dewald it's payback time bulls will be up and ready for this match !!

  • Paul Botha - 2012-05-30 10:02

Papsakke you boys are making it too easy for the mighty Bulls !!
