Burglars spoil Chiefs' win

2012-08-06 10:53

Wellington - Burglars ransacked the home of Chiefs coach Dave Rennie while his side were winning a maiden Super Rugby title in Hamilton, he has revealed.

Rennie said his Huntington home was badly damaged when thieves stole a safe holding his wife's jewellery as the Chiefs cruised to a 36-7 victory over the Sharks at Waikato Stadium, a few kilometres away.

"The safe was pretty small but getting it out would have been a hell of a job and they did a lot of damage in the process," he told the Waikato Times.

"It certainly put a dampener on the night."

Rennie believed he had been deliberately targeted because the burglars knew he would be at Saturday's game, with star centre Sonny Bill Williams the victim of a similar burglary in May during a match against the Northern Bulls.

"It is concerning," Rennie told the newspaper. "Unfortunately there are people who prey on these situations."

Waikato police urged locals to be on the lookout for distinctive jewellery stolen in the burglary, saying it was a way the community could repay the Chiefs' effort in winning the Super Rugby crown.

"We would like Chiefs fans to become our eyes and ears on the matter," detective sergeant Neville Ross said.

  • Chumscrubber1 - 2012-08-06 12:27

Just proves a point - there are "sharks" all over the world. Sad that hearing about a crime in another country makes us feel a bit better about our own situation. Thats a real low point to reach ...

Burglars ?a few names spring to mind ...Cooper, Beale . . .

      nzbro.allblack - 2012-08-06 13:05

BlouMasjien...LOL well said mate..I luv it. mind you cooper's family lives about 98 km north of me which is not far in these parts.Boy racers cover that distance in less than 45 minutes risking a speeding ticket. Regretfully NZ does have crime mostly petty burglars feeding their drug habits and the odd common assault , child abuse ( related to drug abusers ) and sometimes a murder about 1 on average per 3 month cycle. This figure could be very wrong overall because there has been only 2 murders in 5 years in this region where I am now called northland and 3 murders on the south island in the past 2 years . Lots of boy racers problems too. Its not heaven but its closes as..

      nzbro.allblack - 2012-08-06 13:20

for your information I must clarify that 1 of the two murders committed in my area in 2009/2010 was a young SA school boy who murdered a fellow school female friend from the UK. That was the first murder for 20 years for that town called Kerikeri. That young SA boy is currently serving a jail sentence for that murder and his family have left the area.

What happened to the Baby Black that was accused of rape ?

      nzbro.allblack - 2012-08-06 21:38

As far as I know . No charges have been laid yet by the SA police due to lack of credible evidence. At this time its still an allegation that seems to be losing impact as time drags on with no arrest forthcoming.... I'm sure if the SA police had something real to go on the baby black would have been extradited by now. How long has it been?
