Bulls to do talking on field

2012-07-16 22:31

Johannesburg - The Bulls left South Africa en route to Christchurch in good spirits on Monday night, even though there aren’t too many people giving them a chance to succeed in New Zealand.

SuperSport.com reports that coach Frans Ludeke added Flip van der Merwe, who returns from a hip injury, and Dawie Steyn to the 22-man squad that did duty against the Lions this past weekend for the Super Rugby qualifier against their old foe, the seven-time champion Crusaders on Saturday.

But after a good Monday morning training session, the team headed to the airport after a brief goodbye to family for a game that will determine their season this year.

And its no surprise that the Bulls are being seen as underdogs for the match, with the Crusaders probably the most dangerous team in the playoffs at the moment.

The travel factor must play a massive part in this part of the long season, with a 12-hour flight to Sydney, followed by almost two hours at the Sydney Kingston airport before heading to Christchurch, to arrive just before midnight on Tuesday night.

It is a bit of a new feeling being written off in most quarters by everybody, but Ludeke said on departure he wasn’t really worried by it all, and the team would do their talking on the field.

“The process will be vital for us. Obviously you need a solid plan there, and to execute it for 80 minutes. All the rest of it is just talk. We know it’s a once-off game, a playoff and we’re looking forward to playing on Saturday,” Ludeke said.

Still, as the team boarded the bus for the airport, there was a jovial atmosphere among the players. Given the amount of experience they lost at the end of last year, where Boks Victor Matfield, Fourie du Preez, Bakkies Botha, Danie Rossouw, Gurthro Steenkamp and Gary Botha - among others - all either retired or headed overseas, there was a genuine apprehension about their prospects this season.

By making the Qualifiers, they achieved their first goal, and while it may not be seen as the result they want, the team has already ticked the boxes they set for themselves this season.

So anything now will be a bonus. But don’t tell Ludeke and co that, they certainly are determined to succeed. They have beaten the Crusaders three times in a row in the playoffs, although all three were either at Loftus Versfeld or Soweto’s Orlando Stadium, and the prospect of winning in an icy cold Christchurch is something altogether different and way more difficult.

It won’t have escaped them that they were in control of their own destiny on Saturday night against the Lions and by securing the bonus point, they chose to head to New Zealand, where their record is not as good as in Australia.

But the Bulls have simply put their heads down and focused on the task, with the extra day in South Africa being seen as a bonus for their efforts.

“There were two flights booked. We took the option for Monday and its always been better for us to fly out as late as possible. We did our preparation this morning, and we will have a final run over there when we arrive. At this stage of the season everything must be in place. It’s all about getting that mental focus that you want,” Ludeke said.

The Bulls will get their first taste of Christchurch conditions on Wednesday, and have a captain’s run on Thursday. But by Saturday they will know what to expect in their daunting task, and the rest of us will know if they are up to it.

  • ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-16 23:46

The talk because they know they can't play.

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-17 00:41

3 cups How many for the Stormers? (and remember just the answer please, geen opstelletjies)

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-17 03:21

I will give you straight answers without "opstelle" when you ask a relevant, current question. Something about 2012 maybe. Something that is not long forgotten. Something like how many times the Bulls lost to the Stormers this year. If I read your reply correctly you agree with me. The Bulls COULD play. Loooong ago. But they can't play anymore. Thanks Dr. Spiertjies. As ek wil opstelle skryf sal ek.

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-17 03:32

@kalawa Super rugby, thank you. Try and stick to the topic, stay relevant, I know it's not easy

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-17 17:18

Stormkaap I can tell you're a bit dull and that's how I like my trolls but I'm feeling charitable today and I'll throw you this crumb ... That comeback doesn't work against a team that then went on to win the competition 3 times . Something your guys still haven't been able to accomplish in 16 yrs of trying . If we hadn't won it or if we ended up dead last after having won it last that would be an effective comeback ..but as it stands it just makes you look like a bit of an imbecile for not being able to recognize that it's not a real diss.. you zzzztormerzzzz supporters have so little going for you I thought I'd help you out a bit. ... you're very welcome

  • johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-17 00:41

It's like saying "the sun will rise tomorrow" Of course the Bulls will nail the Crusaders like they've done earlier this season. (unlike the poor Stormertjies) 4th cup coming up (4 more than the Stormers)

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-17 03:26

Nailed the Crusaders? On Moftus the Bulls managed to beat the Crusaders by 2 points. That is hardly nailing. That's more like "saved by the bell". In Christchurch, playing knock-out rugby, there is no way. And you still have not put your money where your big mouth is. Please let us know by how many points the Bulls will "nail" the Crusdaers this weekend.

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-17 03:39

@chrissie What did the Stormers do against the Crusaders? (net die antwoordjie0 Miskien moet jy opvolg as jy vrae vra, ek het jou lankal geantwoord, Bulls 17-Crusaders 11 Bulls-Sharks final met die Bulls wat hul 4de koppie wen (4 meer as die Stormers)

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-17 03:48

Bulls 17, Crusaders 11?

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-17 03:53

Ek sal nou net by jou wil weet? 32-13, Crusaders.

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-17 04:13

En terwyl ek dan nou so dom is, hoekom verduidelik jy nie gou vir my die basiese beginsels van kernfisika nie. Toe 'seblief, dogter.

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-17 04:41

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-07-17 06:55

Johan...

So as jy nou mooi daaroor dink.

      paul.sdoow - 2012-07-17 07:34

hey spies didn't you or one of your chapstick buddies say the bulls will beat the stormers as sure as the run will rise. i must have missed that day cause they didn't and the Sun did rise. and as for bulls beating the crusader last time as i re call they had a try dis allowed due to obstruction which was a bias call if any. so both bulls and stormersgenu fare well against them but this time you won't have home advantage at all and on paper or peyper the bulls will struggle not saying its impossible but best of luck to them. would enjoy watching for a third time bulls becoming the stormers biaaatches!

      andrew.arde - 2012-07-17 08:40

The last time the Bulls beat the Crusaders in Christchurch was in 1996!

M A A R... Stormer Groete

      schalk.j.lubbe - 2012-07-17 16:53

@BLUERAVEN - Gaan kyk asb Stormers v Crusaders 2010 of 2011 op Nuweland - dink die Score was 42 - 14 vir die Stormers...

      ChrisinOz294 - 2012-07-17 07:24

@Richard.

My prediction 32-13 for the Crusaders. Yours? I think I'm a bit generous towards the Bulls, but let's say they get lucky and score 13 points.

  • denepaul - 2012-07-17 09:26

What I really love about all this is that typical Kiwi's have written off the Bulls before they have even got to NZ (dont they learn for their own history). Has someone forgotten to mention to them that they also have to play in the freezing conditions which actually suit the Bulls type of close in rugby. Are the Crusaders immune from loosing the plot like they did in the 2nd half of the game against the Force. Come on guys the Bulls really do stand a good chance of beating the Crusaders. The only real weak link (and I would like to know why) is that the scrums have recently started to be a problem. Other than that we can match the Crusaders in an aspect of the game.

  • Stormkaap - 2012-07-17 09:48

The bulls will have scrum a lot better than they did on Saturday and in fact all of the season. Frankly in this phase they going to struggle. Crocket and the Franks bros look too strong in this regard.. Honestly I cant see the Bulls bringing home the bacon

  • david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-07-17 09:48

Has anyone factored in that the Crusaders are not playing at AMI Stadium? Rugby League Park if half the capacity and not the fortress the Crusaders can intimidate with. The smart money is obviously with the Crusaders but a Bulls win is still very much possible. The Saders have also blown hold and cold this season. Good luck Bulls, here's hoping you make the small trek to Waikato next week

      Ashley - 2012-07-17 11:10

This is the Crusaders at home, they will need a whole lot of luck

  • dave.short.102 - 2012-07-17 10:27

  • andre.j.h.cloete - 2012-07-17 14:42

GO BULLS! You have one hell of a match ahead of you... But we know it can be done. To the Sharks, wish you all the best against the Reds! DO it for SA Boys!!!

  • rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-07-17 16:51

I suppose it also does not bother you that you had 2 wins from your last 6 games, and that those were against the bottom 2 SA teams at Loftus. And that we could not beat a Stormers B side at Loftus. And that the Sharks outplayed us completely AWAY from home. And that the Lions scrummed us into the ground. And that we do not have a decent Captain or no 8 in the team. Oh, and our place-kicker's % is below 70%. And our one centre makes sure that the top try-scorer in S15 only touch the ball once in each half. If none of this bothers you Ludeke, I will also sleep well tonight and my Sperbru pick will be Bulls by 15...
