Bulls geared for derby - Spies

2012-05-30 19:00

Pretoria - Bulls captain Pierre Spies believes his players are geared up and ready for their north-south derby against the Stormers here on Saturday.

"It's a tough task playing against the Stormers, but we are glad that we are playing at home and we will be throwing all of our energy toward a good result this weekend," Spies said on Wednesday.

"We knew this derby was waiting for us. Stormers-Bulls games are always filled with hype, so this weekend is set up for another match like that."

The Bulls arrived back from their three-week tour of Australasia earlier in the week and now shift their attention to their last match of the Super Rugby series before the international break, when the Springboks take on England.

Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said they were happy to be home from a tough overseas leg but warned that the Stormers would offer another gruelling encounter as top spot in the SA conference was up for grabs on Saturday.

"If we follow our processes and execute well we will get a good result, but the Stormers are winning and they are a difficult outfit home or away," Ludeke said.

"They are top of the conference, they play winning rugby and that's what you want to do at the end of the day.

"For us, that is what we are after. We know we need to be accurate and we need to play for 80 minutes."

Spies echoed Ludeke's comments, adding that the Bulls would need to be more diligent in closing out matches.

"It's to keep your concentration for 80 minutes. Sometimes a game goes a certain way and you have to adapt to that," he said.

"It's about how you react to difficult situations. We are on course, but we need to concentrate for the full game."

Ludeke made two changes to the team that lost to the Chiefs in Hamilton last week, calling up Juandré Kruger as a replacement for Wilhelm Steenkamp, who drops to the bench, while JJ Engelbrecht is in for Johann Sadie, who drops out of the match 22 altogether.

"Johann Sadie is struggling with a hamstring injury," Ludeke said.

"But we are using a group rotation system so we had a good think about it and decided to leave him out this week."

Personally I believe the Stormers will be a better outfit without Bekker, he has not carried his expected weight and was more of a liability (due to his injuries). The Stormers performed better against the Sharks after they brought on some of the youngsters. So my Bulls, you must NOT be fooled. I think home ground advantage will edge it slightly to the Bulls side, coming of 2 losses and playing at home after 6 weeks and yes, don't forget the CANSA cause! Go Bulls, play those Stormpies into submission - LoL!!!

      Harold - 2012-05-30 18:11

I agree with everything, René. On top of that I hope Pierre can catch more balls than what he drops.

      René - 2012-05-30 18:18

@Harold, Spies must slow down with the pectoral exercises - if the ball hits his pecs its like a ball bouncing of a concrete slab (normally forward - eish); he should focus more on leg muscles and strength, he goes to 'ground' waaaay to quick - such a shame! But I will keep on supporting the man - he improves game by game!

      Harold - 2012-05-30 18:22

Will support him and the rest till my dying day (Which should be soon the way I drink).

      René - 2012-05-30 18:30

@Tokkie, ek stem "wat die hart van vol is loop die mond van oor"! Arme ou Spies, al hierdie goed wat heeldag oor hom 'droooool'. Creepy very creepy!! @Harold, LoL, at least we know the drinking cannot be because of the Bulls!

@Awie, time to move on my friend! Dit gaan nie verander nie. In elke geval, 'n ware ondersteuner 'could not care less' in WAT hulle speel nie. Of 'n drie in 'n blou hempie of 'n pienk hempie gedruk word, dit by 'n DRIE!! Geniet die rugby dis tog waaroor dit gaan. @Tokkie, stem - die Pienk gekerm raak nou afgesaag!

      Harold - 2012-05-30 18:51

I have to agree with Awie. Oom Buurman van Zyl is turning in his grave. I don't know if Louis Schmidt is still alive, but I'm sure he feels the same.

      René - 2012-05-30 18:54

@Harold, exactly what Tokkie was referring to, this is not the 60/70's, it is the year 2012. Go PINK!!!

      Harold - 2012-05-30 19:00

René, considering I was born in 1893, you can understand that I'm a little old school.

      Priester - 2012-05-30 19:21

Ag Awie word net wakker! Ek dra my pienk trui met net soveel trots as die bloue.

Craven.

      marko.miladinovic.52 - 2012-05-31 09:12

The only reason the Bulls have decided to wear their Pink kit for the last time at Loftus is to rub it into the Stormers and their supporters after they have won. Go the Pink!\r\nPS. I bet next week there will be no more reference to the POEFTER PINK BULLS.
