Bulls book playoffs spot

2012-07-14 20:51

Pretoria - The Lions, in no mood to hand out favours, nearly ruined the Bulls’ playoff aspirations, but the hosts hit back in the second half at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday to book their place in the Super Rugby knockout stages.

While the victory was good enough to send the Bulls into the next round of the competition, joining fellow South African sides the Stormers and the Sharks, the Lions made them work hard for it.

Their five-point victory cemented fifth place on the log and the Bulls face the difficult task of travelling to Christchurch for a match against the Crusaders next week.

In taking full points from the match, the Bulls did the Sharks a favour by bunny-hopping ahead of them on the overall log.

The Sharks will now - in what is regarded an easier prospect - play the Reds in Brisbane, while the Stormers will have a bye next weekend by virtue of finishing at the top of the table.

The Lions, who finished bottom of the standings, drew first blood with a penalty conversion by Elton Jantjies four minutes into the clash.

The home-side, however, equalled the scores when Morne Steyn succeeded with a penalty conversion 10 minutes later.

The tide turned in the Bulls’ favour when winger Akona Ndungane intercepted a floating pass from Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies to score the first try of the evening after 16 minutes of play, with Steyn converting.

Jantjies shortened the deficit eight minutes later with a penalty conversion, but Bulls wing Bjorn Basson extended the lead after half an hour, scoring his 10th try of the season.

Scrumhalf Francois Hougaard made a run from a scrum in the Lions’ 22, pulled in two defenders and offloaded to a speeding Basson, who scored under the posts, with Steyn converting.

Lions scrumhalf Michael Bondesio hit back five minutes later when he also picked the ball up from a scrum to break to his right, dummy and score.

Jantjies converted to bring his side within four points of the Bulls, while Steyn succeeded with a penalty conversion with only two minutes left in the second half (20-13).

The visitors’ dogged determination saw them cross the whitewash on the half-time whistle, with a beardless Joshua Strauss scoring from a driving maul after a successful lineout five metres from the line.

Jantjies converted to level the scores at 20-20 going into the break.

The Bulls hit their straps in the second period, adding two more tries to take the match away from the visitors.

Hougaard scored the Bulls’ third try shortly after the restart with an enterprising run from a ruck on the Lions’ 22-metre line, with Steyn converting.

Five minutes later flanker Jacques Potgieter secured the bonus point with their fourth try.

Steyn converted and added another three points with a successful penalty attempt with 15 minutes left in the match.

The Bulls fended off a charging Lions team to keep the scores unchanged in the dying stages.

    So moer die Crusaders julle.

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-14 21:00

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-14 21:06

@dronk Isak Kry hulp, alkohol is nie jou maat nie.

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-14 21:11

Outburst? Shame, can you count to 16? The amount of years the Stormers are cupless now.

      Morne - 2012-07-14 21:15

      duane.g.otto - 2012-07-14 21:44

@Morne ek stem bru. Go Stormers!!!

      roland.slater.7 - 2012-07-14 22:24

  • johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-14 20:58

Bulls rugby is gesond julle onnosel Stormer weseltjies. Cravenweek kampioene, Varsity cup Kampioene, 4de Superkoppie oppad (4 meer as die Stormers). Ooo, dokter kry verskriklik lekker.

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-07-14 21:06

Oh yes the fake doctor from Canada.

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-14 21:09

@dronk Isak BWA HA HA HA HA In watter sloot het jy vanoggend wakker geword?

      backstabber.adder - 2012-07-14 22:18

Isak do not waste your time responding to this crude, blinkered moron, pretending to be a well-off doctor. I suspect he is actually struggling a bit, explaining his bitterness and anger issues. Anyway, speaking of suip, I bought myself a bottle of Old Pulteney 21 years old last night. Not fake, Spies, real stuff.

      theunis.botha.96 - 2012-07-14 23:37

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-15 00:24

@backstabber Ai ek kry so lekker as die jaloesie jou so klaarmaak.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-15 10:22

no need to qualify yourselves to each other guys. mick nallet said yesterday stormers will win the S15, while he was in the supersport studio no less!! he is qualified. he destroyed gary teichman then abandoned ship before achieving the dizzying heights of 6th place in the 6 nations for italia

      Robsschele - 2012-07-15 12:12

Starting to name the schoolboy cups? Soon you might have to reach down to primary school level. Stormers had the conference cup last year and this year. They have the Vodacom Cup this year and they might get the Super Cup. Please note I said : might. I did not count it already like you did.

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-15 10:25

if we get beat by the saders, the saders will win the S15. our game is the game that decides the champions of the S15. nick mallet didnt say that, but i believe it. if we lose to the saders, its a better result than i thought we would have this year. as this team grows as a unit we will see great things from them. but nick mallet didnt tell me that though, so it cant be true. he was in studio

      welhman.boesak - 2012-07-15 15:12

Die pink Bulle gaan wys wie hulle rerig is en die span van Christchurh maklik klop, watch ons Saterdag, pienk all the way,go Bulls!!!!

      bossie.delport - 2012-07-14 21:26

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-14 21:29

most likely bossie .. but as long as they put on a good show and lose with honor I honestly don't care very much .

      bossie.delport - 2012-07-14 21:50

Random- credit where due.. At least your not in denial as to what you can expect next weekend

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-14 22:11

yip bossie I'm a realist . Although, there is still an outside chance since I think the Saders are a little bit down from where they've been in the past . The Reds I thought outplayed them at home and they've been very hot and cold this year so who knows. But Bossie man I tell you it's good to support a team that's won it , you can sit back and just enjoy the rugby .. maybe you'll experience that year after next ;-)

  • cf.coetzee.3 - 2012-07-14 21:04

Wouldn't it make for pleasant reading if the anti Stormers, Bulls brigade showed a bit of gratitude towards SA having 3 teams in the play-off's & put aside their petty provincialism & sniping childish comments. Congratulations Stormers, Sharks & Bulls, let's all get behind our 3 teams.

      johan.spies.18 - 2012-07-14 21:21

Even Deon Fourie from the Stormers had a better game at eight than Pierre Spies

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-07-15 08:48

Maar al my vertoue is in julle.

  • gsaker1 - 2012-07-15 09:16

Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings Bulls fans but you now play a very in form Crusaders who did what they needed do by half time against the Force. And you get the nightmare of playing them at home in Canterbury - that is close to mission impossible anytime - but at finals time - forget it. Yes I know you will talk it up with a bunch of silly comments that the Bulls will 'do this and that' - but the reality is the Bulls now have the toughest task in Super Rugby and as fans you should at the very least, prepare yourself for being eliminated from the finals very early. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against the Bulls at all, but they will not beat the 7 times champions at home, and especially as they will be back to full strength and in front of an earthquake battered home crowd screaming for victory! But for pities sake Sharks do us all a favor and beat the Reds will you!

      tom.tardis - 2012-07-15 10:41

nick mallet said the stormers will win the S15 while he was in the studio no less therefore it must be true. actually it seems like theyve won it already

      phillys.winterbottom - 2012-07-15 12:16

big bulls fan, but have to agree with your comment, it is a huge ask for a Bulls side that has simply not been at its best in S15 this year. But we live in hope!! At least we have won the cup a few times and only after those victories have flapped our gums about it!! I have a feeling that certain big mouths from a certain province that spew on this site are going to be humbled this year.

  • Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-15 09:43

I see as usual the Bulls and Stormers fans make all the comments - and none of them are about the game the article is about. Yawn ................

  • nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-07-15 12:40

well done Bulls, first half was close, my team just could not keep up in the second half. Hope you carry the second half form forward in the rest of the tournament :)

  • selma.botha.9 - 2012-07-15 13:37

Come on Sharks and Bulls - give us a home final! It is a very tall order. Hopefully Morne will settle down now that baby Steyn has announced his arrival. Or will the nappy drills take their toll.

  • keithronald.wildschut - 2012-07-15 16:58

Well done Bulls; but please Slaptjips tell JJ he is playing with wings-he must feed them to score the tries. He wants all the glory for him but his roll is to distribute ball after he breaked the line.Go to Christchurch and surprise the Crusaders.

  • Mandy Casey - 2012-07-15 17:32
