Aplon replaces Jantjes

2011-03-08 16:03

Cape Town - Gio Aplon has been named at fullback in the Stormers side to play the high-riding Highlanders in a Vodacom Super Rugby match at Newlands on Friday evening.

Aplon will replace Conrad Jantjes and the change has been welcomed by Stormers stand-in skipper Jean de Villiers, who is at the helm while the injured Schalk Burger is kicking his heels on the sidelines.

Jantjes has been rested as a precautionary measure as he has an Achilles niggle.

"We're in a wonderful position where we can replace one Springbok (Jantjes) with another (Aplon)," said De Villiers.

"We didn't do justice to the game last week, especially as we have a duty to the spectators and viewers to entertain.

"We'll try to create chances and spaces for Aplon to do well and hopefully he'll be the one that will help us to strike form again."

The Stormers held off the Cheetahs to win a kicking game 21-15 at Newlands on Saturday.

Springbok three-quarter Jaque Fourie, like Aplon, returns to the side but Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has decided to play him off the bench.

The other change is at the base of the scrum where Dewaldt Duvenhage swops places in the run-on XV with scrumhalf Ricky Januarie.

Both the Highlanders, from New Zealand, and the Stormers are unbeaten this season.

Yay Ricky is benched - It's a start

      Makutu - 2011-03-08 16:15

You might also need to bench CJ van der Linde. I don't rate him that highly anymore. What's wrong with Wikus Blaaw? Didn't he help the Stormers a lot last year?

  • Makutu - 2011-03-08 16:12

I am very sorry Stormers fans but Jean De Villiers is just like Wynand Olivier. Highly ineffective centres. I do not know how they actually made it into the Bok teams. Or let me just say, South Africa doesn't have a world class inside center. Juan De Jong has great potential and I see him being that guy that can fit the shocking lack of talent in the No. 12 Jersy here in SA. The New Zealansders beat up very badly in the midfield. Jaque Fourie needs a partner. Gio Aplon is world Class! Goodluck Stormers.

      The_Fox - 2011-03-08 16:23

Look, on recent form I have to agree with you, however when Jean fires on all cylinders he can be one of the best on the world - Unfortunately he hasn't been quite the same player of old since returning from his overseas stint. On the other hand he and Jaque do make a formidable centre combo and have proven themselves over the years for the Boks. I do feel however AC should look to give Tim Whitehead or Paul Bosch more exposure at this level as Jean and Jaque are both injury prone.

      Makutu - 2011-03-08 16:39

I've never been a fan of Jean to be quite frank with you. Aaron Mauger and Tana Umaga used to teach him a few valuable lessons. Let's not even start with Olivier. Let's get back to basics. Centres are supposed to draw in defenders and pass. Or break lines in the middle of the field and then pass... Jean and Oliver take the ball to ground more than enough times. They might as wel buckle up and be flankers if they want to do that. There doesn't seem to be a difference between Jean and Schalck. Schalk does his job well though. Meyer Bosman is doing well at the Sharks, he might as well be our Bok inside centre. Atleast he passes. Paul Bosch is very good. I like him too...

      Sh@rks Fever - 2011-03-08 17:09

Hey Makutu. The inside centre who we never seem to mention is Doppies Le Granche. Excuse the speling. He has been for years now the most underated player in SA. Look at the amount of line breaks he makes and the amount of times he still offloads after being tackled. On form he is our best.

      Kaapie - 2011-03-08 17:46

@ Fox on paper he makes a formidable duo with Jaque, yet in reality Jaque and Juan were devatating last year. Agree with Shark Fever re Doppies.. and the headline should have been Ricki dropped.. Between him , Schalk, Jean and Conrad they have been playing on reputation. If I had to choose a winger between Habana and Aplon I would choose Aplon. He is a far better runner with ball in hand and can step off either foot, habana only has straight line gas(what left of it) At the time I felt a Basson/Mapoe purchase would have been far better than bringing Habana to CT

      mike - 2011-03-08 20:35

Well if you looking to play the game plan the Boks are playing you need a centre like Jean or Wynand. If however you want to change that game plan and look for someone to move the ball on a regular basis then there is no better in SA then Doppies. My one concern though is the new rules fav the defending side on the first view phases so if you don't have a centre who can carry the ball well what do you do. Just remember the AB's first choice is Nonu for exactly the same reason why Jean and WO are chossen, he can take contact and stil make yardage there by drawing in defenders. It seems like the only way to attack, due to no reason for teams to commit players to the breakdowns. They really need to figure out how to make the breakdown situation a 50/50 contest before you will really see expansive play work.

      dushaas - 2011-03-09 07:39

Makutu, do yourself a favour and youtube "tribute to Jean de Villiers" and that will give you an idea of the class he posesses. He is a bit off form but you know what they say... Form is temporary but class is permanent. I do agree with you though that De Jongh and Fourie should be the first choice centre pairing.

      Makutu - 2011-03-09 08:49

Oh yes... The Lions guy. Doppies LeGrange, his compbination with Jaque Fourie was superb too. So the Sprinboks will still go and play this stupid kind of rugby that the Bulls play? If so, goodluck in winning the World Cup this year. The All Blacks will not play Nonu at centre. Nonu is a better center than both Jean and Olivier anyways. He crashes sometimes and he breaks lines and offloads too. Jean and Olivier very very rarely offload or pass the ball to their outside. @dushaas! Will a You Tube video make a difference to how he is playing? I might as well go look at Rokocoko and Bryan Habana too. What they did in 2003 makes no difference to what they are doing TODAY. Jean is KAK! Juan de Jong and Jaque Fouries are by far the best centre combination the Stormers and SA has. BY A MILE!

      Raka13 - 2011-03-09 09:09

Jean is one of the best centres in world rugby, he is a safe choice in any team because he makes so little mistakes, but also agree that he is not on his best form. With Januarie out, our backline will start performing better. Juan is world class, I'll pick him at 12, Jean at 13 and Jacque at 14.

      Dan the Man - 2011-03-09 11:37

Jean is an inside centre or bust guys, his injuries have cost him too much pace to be a success at outside centre or wing. I agree that Doppies is probably the best inside we have at the moment...but would rather see Frans Steyn there. We have Aplon and Ludik who can cover fullback as well as Steyn. And quite frankly if Lambie does not get the bok flyhalf spot then he would be as good a choice as any of them at inside centre!

  • The_Fox - 2011-03-08 16:15

    Yes baby!!

  • gooinat - 2011-03-08 16:19

Best news I have heard today, glad Januarie is on the bench,Stormers by 7 points!!!!!!!!!!!

      Louw - 2011-03-08 17:46

      Stem saam Stormers met 12

  • Hanjo - 2011-03-08 16:20

hopefully this'll be a permanent replacement

  • Philly123 - 2011-03-08 16:30

there will be fire in the team with de Jongh in the back line. He is great player and hopefully he will be able to break the line a few times... I would rather play a bad game and win than playing a great game like the lions and loose... al the wins count, nobody really wants to looks back and say we played good rugby but lost...

  • Fred - 2011-03-08 16:32

At last someone in the Stormers management has noticed how slow Januarie (krimpvarkie) is. We must have better scrumhalves in the province to relace him on the bench. It's sad that we lost a great scrummie like Conrad Hoffman to the Sharks, because of our management love-affaire with Januarie.

  • Sh@rks Fever - 2011-03-08 17:15

Now this team looks better. Perhaps the Stormers had the same old problem the Sharks had 2 years ago. Plumtree kept picking Pienaar even though Kockett was on fire. The team was split in two and it showed in the results. Perhaps now that Dewald is playing we will see a good result. And with Aplon at the back we can expect fireworks. Good luck Stormers.

  • Shannon - 2011-03-08 17:40

Thats good that aplon replaces jantjies, Jantjies was just causing problems there at the back.

  • skywalker - 2011-03-08 18:50

My prayers have been answered...bring January on when the game is won and he slows the game up...this new look Stormers side is the A team.

      DocinBahrain - 2011-03-08 20:48

Ain't no A team. Aplon is too small to compete at the breakdown (compare with Bekker who can be on his own two feet and compete for a ball a metre away); cannot kick high enough to give his chasers time to get to the ball (compare with Frans Steyn who can get snow on it); is not robust enough to break a strong tackle (compare with Alberts/Whitely/Vermeulen). Front rank is still suspect (Wickus Blaauw only succeeds when scrumming inwards so he would not really help matters). My apologies but, as much as his one-sided comments irritate me, Pappa Smurf is correct - Stormers (AKA Teacup Boys) suck.

  • BlackSwan - 2011-03-08 18:59

January must be AC's lost son - no ways he should even be on the bench Not even the Kings want him.....

  • Jannie - 2011-03-08 21:37

Baie dankie - iemand sien die lig! Jantjes is die oneffektiefste flippen fullback wat ek in 'n lang tyd gesien het en Ricky is op sy beste tans net 'n plaasvervanger.

      Raka13 - 2011-03-09 09:15

I agree with Conrad being ineffective, but I think Zane takes the biggest slice of the cake. What is wrong with our full backs? Where has the days gone where full backs attack from behind - probaly the most attractive and exciting part of any attack on a rugby field - when a full back breaks all the lines of defence?

  • Paddy - 2011-03-08 23:57

Jaque Fourie op die bank....pure bef@ktegeid!

Makutu, CJ is a tight head not a loose head. He's been playing out of position. Blaauw is still out injured.
