Watson on bench for opener?

Cape Town. – Duane Vermeulen is believed to have the inside track to start at No 8 ahead of Luke Watson in the Stormers’ Super 14 opener against the Sharks at Newlands on Saturday.

While the Stormers held closed training sessions on Monday and Tuesday, the chances are apparently good that the loose-trio will consist of Schalk Burger, Francois Louw and Vermeulen.

It is anticipated that Watson will be on the bench when coach Rassie Erasmus on Wednesday announces his 22-man squad for the game.

Burger, who will play his 50th game for the Stormers, has apparently shaved off his blonde locks. “He almost looks a little like Wicus Blaauw,” said a team insider.

Vermeulen had an outstanding Super 14 with the Cheetahs last year and signed for Western Province in November. The composition of the Stormers loose-trio is one of the big talking points ahead of the game.

It is believed that Louw has recovered from his injury and Vermeulen did enough in the pre-season to win a place in the starting line-up and by yesterday afternoon there was still no certainty over the back three.

Fijian wing Sireli Naqelevuki is still recovering after injuring his ribs in the warm-up game against Boland. Erasmus said last week he would not expose Naqelevuki to risk.

The Stormers coach has several options, including asking Springbok fullback Conrad Jantjes to wear the No 11 jersey. Jantjes struggled with a groin injury in the pre-season, but is expected to be in the Stormers’ 22-man squad. Joe Pietersen and Nick Koster can also play on the wing.

Until he apologises to the nation about his anti "Dutchmen" remarks and anti Springbok sentiments I cannot support him. He is a bigot!

  • Steven - 2009-02-11 06:39

Puke Watson should sit on the bench all the time. He is not worthy of playing for the Stormers or the Springboks.

  • sharkie - 2009-02-11 07:20

Play Luke on the wing!! Pleeeeeeeease! We need the bonus point.

  • len - 2009-02-11 07:23

dammit rassie we were looking forward to 80 min of torchering the little puke.please bring him on quickly,we need the tackling practice and the crowd needs the vocal practice to booooooooooooo the little prick.come on sharks cheere up i am sure he will come on.

  • andre - 2009-02-11 07:26

  • Willie Botha - 2009-02-11 07:50

  • darryl - 2009-02-11 08:01

is this really what makes news headlines these days. whoop-di-do so luke isnt playing starting line...i dont see a news report over koster not making the team or any other player or that matter. tomorrows headline.....LUKE WATSONS BREATHES!!!!! can we for get about him and concentrate on the rugby, he is just another player

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 08:04

    Lekker you slet

  • LEN - 2009-02-11 08:13

also just read that he got the plonker of the year award.does that not tell us something.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 08:15

Pity the bench isn't on watson - mind u dont puke on the bench luke!

  • GeePMB - 2009-02-11 08:18

And yet again the media put Watson's name in lights! Can we not get over this over-rated player for heaven sake. Who cares if he is on the bench. The Sharks couldn't care less if he plays or not, he is not a threat to them at all.

  • Bulls fan - 2009-02-11 08:32

Keep Puke Plonker of the Year Twatson on the bench, where he cannot have an influence on anything as he will just mess everything up like he usually does.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 08:56

luke is to##er, who cares if he plays or not

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 08:56

Puke some good advice, take your helmet to the game or stay in the change room. Please twatson snr make an offer for your son to go play fetchers in the Eastern Cape.

  • 857 - 2009-02-11 09:01

Bleh, he is a disgrace to any sport and should be banned from playing. puke watson se moer

If last years form is anything to go by Vermeulen will make a huge impact at 8 and Rassie has the option of Watson covering 6 & 8 off the bench. Watson can also be very effective in the last 20 when things open up. The combination of Burger, Vermeulen & Louw gives Rassie lots of lineout options especially in that we are looking thin at lock. GO THE MIGHTY STORMERS!

  • jonno - 2009-02-11 09:15

His teammates and rassie are probably afraid he'll puke and cost them the game...i think L(p)uke should rather follow cheeky into politics, where u dont need any qualities other than a big mouth...

  • Fred - 2009-02-11 09:28

    PUKE LOL that's toooooo funny

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 09:35

It is ridiculous - all this hatred towards one rugby player. Firstly Jeremy Mansfield says the word Dutchmen almost every day on live radio and nobody complains. Secondly Luke Watson never said the word at all and yet it is falsely reported that he did, and everybody goes crazy!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 09:42

Although his speech was highly publicised and slated, it was never meant to be for the general public. Take the speech in the context of who it was meant to be heard by. Aspiring young black rugby players who believe that they are too small and scrawny to make headway in the game of rugby, and who have historically not held much pride in the Springbok emblem. Then read the speech and you'll recognise it isn't so offensive, as it is motivational. There are no Dutchmen mentioned in the speech.

  • Joe - 2009-02-11 10:05

Luke is still one of the best players in SA,rassie has lost the plot and the results of the game(sharks 40-17 stomers) will teach him a thing a two about rugby and lukes influence!...Stop hating Luke for being honest, the boers stil think SA rugby is just for then alone!...Go LUKE!!!

  • Manny - 2009-02-11 10:13

I think he should call his Daddy to come and help, stir some noise so that they will be forced to play him, also got to agree this guy gets way to much air time, and really do hope he plays agains the lions, I have my poster all made up and have been practicing my Boo luke Chants for a while now.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 10:29

Omit Luke and you loose at the point of breakdown Burger is great but not a fetcher neither are the other two guys. Mark my words the game will be won from the scrum and point of break down. If you going to try and play Burger as a fetcher we will loose with penalties against us and loose Burger to a yellow card. Rassie you can't make players fetchers it's something you gifted with like Josh Cronfelt, Macaw, George Smith etc...... Ignore what Luke supposedly said, like many other ignore what white and now black supremacy has said and play rugby for unification purposes.

  • len - 2009-02-11 11:00

joe (maybe pietersen) luke never was or will be one of the best.what are u for the score YOU said it,with puke or not that is nearly what the score is going to be again.gooooooooo shaaaaaarks!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 11:46

People give Luke a break, name calling is so childish..his a good player and that's that, who ever dont like him deal with it and please dont come to Newlands if you going to boo players..GO LUKE

  • Will - 2009-02-11 12:36

@Joe: Where have you been the last few years. Your comment is so yesterday and lame. If you mad about something, don't bring rugby into it! It is because of people like you and Luke that say things like that, which makes the so yesterday issue never go away! Grow up boet!

  • Anton - 2009-02-11 12:46

Len. - Usually the guys who win awards like "Super14 player of the year" are considered the best. I know you have your predjudices but you can't argue with that fact.

  • len - 2009-02-11 13:44

anton one player (even super 14 player of the year)can't make a team .there is 14 other players too.plonker player of the year sits on the bench

  • Neville howard - 2009-02-11 13:50

Hahaha, all I can say is LOL at Anonymous User 2/11/2009 8:04 AM. Brilliant!!!

  • Ant - 2009-02-11 15:00

I see Percy Montgomery and AJ Venter are also on the bench with young Luke. That is a very strong team - watch out Sharkies....

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 15:42

Uh oh. That means the Sharks may actually struggle to get the bonus point. Duane is a super star in the making!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 16:47

No doubt Duane is a good player. But (emotions aside) facts are that in last years Super14 Watson had the highest tackle count in the Stormers, he also hit the most rucks and made the highest amount of carries in the team. He was 2nd in tacles broke (behind Naqelavuki) and second in metres gained. Not a bad substitute to have on your bench. I don't think we've seen the last of Watson.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-11 18:16

Puke should'nt even be allowed into the stadium. All this sensationalism and cotroversy about a player is becoming pathetic. There are plenty up and coming young players that play and love rugby for the game. Why cant this idiot just learn to be humble. Look at guys like Fourie du Preez, Jacques Fourie, and many more from all provinces...they play, get the job done and still have time to smile and be friendly. None of the fighting, scrathing, biting, tearing of hair, screaming that ms Watson displays on the field. Typical spoiled schoolboy rubbish. Seeing that he will not be doing a lot of playing, he could be useful on a farm....that watermelon carrying stance and attitude might secure him a place in a top harvest team. Come down to earth Puke, and MAYBE people can start noticing your rugby skills. Dont blame the spectators, adminitrators or anyone else for your pathetic behaviour.

  • VoetPomp_Viljoen - 2009-02-11 19:26

I hope that Luke gets hit by a naartjie while he sits on the bench

  • Anonymous User - 2009-02-12 10:42

Fair comment there Brendan but the point is, he's not going to apologize. He doesn't need to........he said it and people have criticized him enough why don't we all just get with it. I honestly don't think it's fair on him to get all these negative comments. It also says a lot about news24 reporters. Good luck to all the South African teams and I hope the Sharks win.
