Rob Houwing, Sport24 chief writerCape Town – An avalanche of Cheetahs and Stormers players have earned their place in the spotlight through week-four selection for the Sport24 Super 14 Dream Team.
The line-up, as dictated by our readers’ votes, was always likely to boast that characteristic after those teams’ respective big wins over the Hurricanes and Highlanders.
Throw in the fact that the defending champions, the Bulls, had a bye, and mass changes to the weekly XV were inevitable, though sadly the still-winless Lions and Sharks barely got noticed: only the latter’s No 8 Ryan Kankowski made the cut after their controversial 25-21 defeat to the Waratahs in Sydney.
But seven Cheetahs players and as many from the Stormers earned your nod of approval - including a few generally unsung ones.
For instance, Stormers scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage, with 45 percent of support in his position, hurtles into the side despite sometimes playing second fiddle to Ricky Januarie at his own franchise.
The same is true of seasoned lock Anton van Zyl (42 percent of votes for the No 4 jersey), who only ousted rookie De Kock Steenkamp from the run-on XV before the Highlanders encounter yet contributed to a spirited effort from the pack as a whole against the visitors from Otago.
Bolstered by their Deadeye Dick kicking against the more fancied Hurricanes, the Cheetahs’ Naas Olivier (56 percent of support at flyhalf) and Meyer Bosman (41 percent for inside centre) also earned rare appearances in the Dream Team.
Despite the disadvantage of sitting out a weekend, the table-topping Bulls do at least retain the nucleus of the overall Dream Team (the composite one judged on all matches in the 2010 Super 14 campaign).
There are eight of them in that combo: right wing Gerhard van den Heever, inside centre Wynand Olivier, flyhalf Morne Steyn, scrumhalf Fourie du Preez, No 8 Pierre Spies, locks Victor Matfield and Flip van der Merwe, and hooker Gary Botha.
The player in that team with the highest confidence rating in his specific position is the Stormers’ big off-season recruit Jaque Fourie at outside centre – he earns 80 percent approval for the No 13 shirt, despite being more renowned thus far at Newlands for his brilliant defensive organisation rather than major attacking prowess yet.
