De Jongh Borchardt - Rapport
Pretoria - It's a baptism of fire, but 19-year-old Gerhard van den Heever will be ready when he makes his Super14 debut for the Bulls against the Stormers at Loftus on Saturday.
The youngster has been picked in place of injured Springbok flyer Bryan Habana.
Bulls coach Frans Ludeke has full faith in the abilities of the former Craven Week player.
Van den Heever is nick-named “Shadow” for his ability to evade defenders. He scored a couple of brilliant tries for Tukkies in last year’s Varsity Cup.
The Super14 is, of course, a different matter.
Willem de Waal’s inclusion at flyhalf for the Stormers points to an aerial attack aimed at Van den Heever.
However, the Bulls are ready for it. Zane Kirchner and Akona Ndungane are experienced players under the high ball and will support Van den Heever.
A lot of attention was paid this past week to Van den Heever’s game under the high ball, as well as his kicking.
“Gerhard will be ready for the Stormers,” said Ludeke. “He is a bit of an unknown factor, but has been training with us for five months. I believe he can make a positive contribution. He played in the warm-up games against the Lions and Cheetahs and performed well there.”
Ludeke expects the Stormers to try and unnerve Van den Heever, but does not foresee any problems.
