Sharks looking for 1st victory

John Plumtree (Gallo)

Durban - The Sharks will be desperately looking to pick up their first win of the Super 14 and their first win in Canberra since 1998 when they go up against the Brumbies on Saturday (10:40 SA time).

It's been a miserable start to the season for the Sharks, who had terrible luck during the pre-season in terms of injuries and other off-field distractions, and with some questionable officiating going against them in their opening matches, they have suffered a number of narrow defeats.

The coastal franchise did impress at times against the Waratahs last weekend, which saw them score a magnificent try after 15 phases, but in the end recently suspended referee Paul Marks denied them victory with some one-eyed decisions.

Nevertheless, coach John Plumtree said the Sharks had put this behind them and were looking to produce more passages of play such as the one that resulted in their second try against the 'Tahs.

"There were some good signs of us getting our game going again but we are still not accurate enough in that we seldom get all facets of our game working well at the same time. Some parts will go well but then it is undone when we under-perform in another area. When we got consistency in our game we put 15 phases together and scored a comfortable team try."

However, last weekend's match saw the Sharks handed two more yellow cards to take their tally to five in the season, and Plumtree made some much-publicised comments about the repercussions his side will face if this continues.

"I was very annoyed with our discipline and have been for a while. I read the riot act to the guys in our post-match analysis. I told the guys that the next player to get a yellow card gets a red card from me. When you are down on luck and trying really hard to get out of a hole, you can't then make it tougher for the team by getting yourself binned. It is just silly and stresses the team unnecessarily."

They will undoubtedly need to be on top of all aspects of their game against the Brumbies, who will not allow ill-discipline to go unpunished, with Wallabies Matt Giteau and Stirling Mortlock proven match-winners.

The Brumbies have also turned their home ground into something of a winning fortress, with few South African sides ever enjoying success in the Australian capital, and the Sharks are no exception, having won just one of their last eight games there.

So a massive task awaits the touring Durbanites yet again, but if they hope to keep their baying critics at bay and turn their season around, they need to find a way to win.

Lets be honest, the ref was terrible but we can't all sit here now and say we should have won that game. in every sport there will be bad decisions but remember rugby isn't like cricket, in cricket a bad call by the umpire costs you a wicket and that can be a huge blow. Rugby is 80 minutes, the ref was terrible and we have a right to feel hard done by but at the end of the day it was a loss and we didn't manage to play above the ref (Although he did do his bit near the end when we were about to take the lead) but lets take the positives out of the game and move forward, at least we started scoring tries again. This loss may have been the 4th in a row but at least we played better rugby, the first few games were tough to watch as a sharks fan and now at least the guys are playing better. I said last week that the game the sharks win will probably be absolute destruction, I've seen a few teams looking for a win just suddenly click and destroy the opposition, I certainly hope this is what happens in at 10:40.

How about writing something positive about the players, especially the Sharks and boosting their moral instead of all the negativity that is being thrown about. Ex Durbanite and although we now reside in Dubai we still support the Sharks and all SA teams. GO SHARKS GO - WE LOVE YOUALL

So we've lost 4 games, so their are problems, does not mean we have to be negative, last week I predicted the sharks would win with 14, they should have won by 11, if it was not the ref. I predict this week that if the game is fair we are going to give the brumbies a thrashing.

During the warm-up games I wanted to go into hibernation for the season. As painful as it is to reflect inwardly and be honest it is now time. Hugh Reese-Edwards was a hero of King's Park as a player. He took over coaching a successful Sharks outfit and put them on the bottom of the log. Immediately he was relieved the Sharks again performed. Now he is the backline coach. This is the team that used to punish opposition mistakes. One more reason to put into the messy mixing bowl of underperformance.

@Willy, please dont cry. Dont make your problem ours for supporting the Bulls. Pienaar never wanted to play flyhalf and has said he wants to play 9. So get your facts or has the klippies and coke made you brain numb.

Stefan Well said .The sharks have a bad attitude at the moment. They look very unfit and aloud some of their best players to leave,

Sharks will win. There is no more ref interference. Why has 2 refs that blew the Shark games given the bullet. Makes you think

The Sharks front row is like an overweight person who wants to get thin, and will do everything except eat less. John Smit is not a tighthead, and is not as good a hooker as Bismark. Until the Sharks management accepts that they are not going to come right at the highest level. It is also unsettling to the team, who secretly knows that too. On top of that, the Sharks are trying to shoehorn poor Pienaar into every position except the one he is really good at: Number 10. For heaven's sake! Now I am support the Bulls and we of course hate the Sharks (but only because you are so good). But now we feel sorry for you. So please fix this so that we can start hating you again. Grrrrr!

Looks like throwing money at it is not a winning formula for the Sharks this year. Never mind! Go Cheetahs, do it for South Africa.

Go Sharks. I will bet my salary that once the Sharks start winning we will keep on winning. As we always say winning and loosing becomes a habit. Good luck to the Stormers and Bulle as well.

Am I the only one getting frustrated when the Warathas is been refered to as the Tahs? Or the Hurricanes as the Canes? Or the Crusaders as the Saders? Why don't we call all the teams on the latter parts of their official names? Then the Cheetahs can also be called Tahs! My favourite team would be the Ulls and the worst team can be called the Ions. The coastal teams will then be the Arks and the Mers. Australia would be able to field also the Orce, the Bies and the Eds. The rest of the NZ teams will then be the Iefs, Landers and the Lues...

History will show that when a side is desperate to win, then the victory they seek is harder to come by. The boys are going to be up against it in Canberra. Have you seen the match officials! We're doomed, doomed I tell you!

Sharks are a proud team and to lose another game is just not in them. They will win this game, they will have to.

I'm afraid John Plumtree is a bit optimistic. I expect the brumbies (George, Rocky, Josh, Matt, Stirling, Adam) to run an absolute riot, let's be serious. For all the Sharks out there, I am not insulting now. I want all SA franchises, including the Sharks, to triumph, sincerely. The difference, for me, is preperation. JP says that he will act harshly on someone who gets a yellow. Why now? 5 in 4 games. Did they not know this before the season? What's going to change now? And this point, frankly, is symbolic of their campaign thus far. The whole Ruan (9 o 10?) John Smit debacles tell me that this whole side is seriously unfinished (like not rounded off) for this season. Another thing; I don't seem to hear any consensus among Sharks fans/critics/armchair analysts (like me) etc. about what is wrong. This tells me that there is not just one or two key factors faulty. It's like the whole machine is getting a bit ill. Setting up 15 phases and scoring sounds like top rugby, but read further into it. With the Sharks' apparent top tight 5 and high performance loosies, it should be easier. The tah's are good, but if this is the best that is taken out of a game, how are they going to beat the Bulls at Loftus, or the very proffesional NZ team over there? Especially should they play in the finals. No, hardy Sharks fans, I'm not delivering a cheap shot here. I think that all loyal Sharks fans were somewhere or somehow (coaching, management or wherever) betrayed by incompetence. John Plumtree's name seems to keep surfacing everywhere...
Anti bull3/12/2010 2:27 PM
The sharks will face the same fate as the lions - Looked better last week but the tahs was actually piss poor and the Brumbies are much better team than the tahs. Also du Plessis brothers should go....
MACK THE BLUE3/12/2010 2:22 PM
keep the refs honest ,dont be stupid ,do basics right and dont get carded, and maybe ,just maybe ,ja you could win ! WHY NOT ?
