Cape Town - Stormers coach Allister Coetzee has named a squad of 22 for Saturday’s opening Vodacom Super 14 match against the Lions in Johannesburg but he is still waiting on a full recovery from his skipper, Schalk Burger.

The Springbok flank did not train with the Stormers in their lunch-time session, although he did participate in a low intensity lineout session in the morning.

“Schalk has a bruised shoulder but fortunately it is not ligaments or an AC or anything like that so we are confident he will get over it and be able to lead the team against the Lions,” said Coetzee.

“We are expecting Schalk to be fully involved in our session tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. Obviously if there are any complications we can change the 22, but we are expecting Schalk to be fit.”

The same can be said for another loose-forward, Francois Louw, who has also been watching from the sidelines for the past few days.

“Francois has had a hip flexor problem since the Sharks game that ruled him out for between eight to 10 days. He has now completed his rehabilitation and is ready to start training again. He will also be back in full training at our session tomorrow,” said Coetzee.

With Sireli Naqelevuki also recovering from his slight injury picked up at the weekend, Coetzee had a mostly fit squad to choose from when it came to assembling his 22 for the trip to Johannesburg. The exceptions are lock Adriaan Fondse, wing Nick Koster and Conrad Jantjes, all of whom have a few weeks to go before full recovery from long-term injuries.

Centre Paul Bosch was ruled out of consideration after dislocating his elbow against a Boland XV last week but he was unlikely to figure in the selection for the Coca Cola Park fixture.

An interesting omission from the squad is Willem de Waal. Many thought the flyhalf would feature due to the damage his booming boot can do on the Highveld, but a combination of Lionel Cronje’s good form in the warm-up games and De Waal’s slow comeback after a neck injury played a role in the selection.

The starting team will be named on Thursday.

Stormers squad: Joe Pietersen, Gio Aplon, Bryan Habana, Sireli Naqelevuki, Jaque Fourie, Juan de Jongh, Lionel Cronje, Peter Grant, Dewaldt Duvenage, Ricky Januarie, Francois Louw, Duane Vermeulen, Pieter Louw, Schalk Burger, Andries Bekker, Anton van Zyl, De Kock Steenkamp, JC Kritzinger, Brok Harris, Deon Fourie, Tiaan Liebenberg, Wicus Blaauw.

Danie or Daar-nie ? Daar is niks in die kop nie, behalwe 'n klomp k*k.You certainly have a bad dose of verbal diarrhoea. Can it be real that someone can honestly write such a lot of utter rubbish.Rather stick to Klippies & Coke.

My stormers 2nd team played in 3rd gear vs Boland, and still won by a mile.Imagine if our 1st team fires ! Pity the Lions with their old folks .I agree that we needed a well rounded squad like we have this year.2010 is not about soccer, but the RETURN of the "golden years" for the Stormers. Ok we still have to beat the Bulls, but no work=no reward.

Are Bryan Habana & Jaques Fourie worrying all the Bulls fans - Sure looks like it as this article is about Schalk getting back into training yet all the Bulls supporters keep talking about is those two-Maybe a bit of worry
Christo2/10/2010 2:00 PM
Just one question : Why do all the stormers supporters always think a negative comment comes from a Bulls supporter? Maybe its because they dont know that there other teams playing in the competition too. Maybe that is just the way the stormers supporters are. Sour grapes because the Bulls have so much more silverware??? Many of the comments towards the stormers comes from Cheetahs, Lions and Sharks supporters too. I have totally lost any last bit of respect I had for the stormers. Thanks to their narrow-minded supporters. May the stormers be crushed in every game this year...coming from a Lion !

Danie, you don't need to get real.... you seriously need to get some brains. I cannot believe that one person can talk so much crap. Let me guess, you are a bulls supporter...have another sip of your "brandewyn and coke" and go talk crap somewhere else.

You clearly didnt see the games boet. I totally agree with the statement that Habana IS useless since he joined a smaller union. 3 Games, 1 simple try. In the game against the Sharks, he hardly even touched the ball. It took him 42m49s to get his first touch. And he got tackled back 3 metres for his efforts. Chased one kicked and ran passed a Sharks player, who took the ball away from him in front of his nose.Got one touch in 15m against Boland and had butter-fingers! Anyone who thinks Habana is still a good player, didnt watch his latest performances. His career is sure for a nose-dive..which already started. Sorry Habana, if you dont pull up your socks, I bet Sereli will lift you out of the team. Before we know it, Habana will most probably end up finishing his career overseas. Like so many other SA players who`s playing career is over !

@Chris, you seem to be smoking your socks mate? Really.... shouldn't you be in school? Why are you bunking again? Seeing as you are home for the day why don't you use your dad's tv remote...look for some rugby on the telly and actually learn something. Then next time you bunk school and add comments on a blog, you will actually know what the F you are talking about!

Stormers look good on paper...Lets see if they can gel as a team! Go Lions!
Chris2/10/2010 6:51 AM
I tend to agree. The stormers think they can win the S14 with 2 new guys in the team. News flash. Bryan Habana is useless and Fourie is just a name on the sheet. Personally, I think they never should have left their respective teams. The Bulls made Habana, he never made the Bulls. It was as clear as daylight that Habana didnt fit into the stormers team over the last 3 games. He played like a rookie. Rather play Juries.
Cliff Bradley2/10/2010 2:51 AM
Danie: You the new Bulla or what ? You seem just as stupid as him . A-Hole , maybe just jealous as well.
@Danie2/9/2010 9:13 PM
Are you for real dude? Do you seriously consider Jaque Fourie and Brian Habana as rejects from other provinces?! You must be high on tik buddy, because the last time I looked those guys were close to being the best in the world in their respective positions. I wouldn't go as far as saying that they'll win since that requires a lengthy build-up over a couple of years, but they will be better than previous years. Also, when have the Stormers ever finished bottom of the log you twat?! "Kinders, luister nou vir oom. Los uit die papegaai slaai (Marijuana), anders draai jul dalk uit soos Danie!" =?
Danie2/9/2010 7:06 PM
This Stormerbarian team will end up bottom of the log again , don't tell me you guys expect this 'has been rejects from other provinces' to actually win the super 14. Get real guys.

@Sheldon, Fully agree, Anton was brilliant last season and has impressed in the warm up games. He desrves the start.

The Stormers look to be the most pollished SA side so far... Think they may just have a shot at the title... but then again they have to beat the Lions on Saturday... nothing like a bogie side to set the cat amoungst the piegionsd
John2/9/2010 4:46 PM
Finally we seem to have depth in numbers. If this side can get off to a good start .... watch out.
