Cape Town - Gcobani Bobo on the wing and Peter Grant at inside centre. That could be Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus' plan with his backline for Saturday's Super14 match against the Crusaders in Christchurch.
Erasmus' depth at wing has been seriously depleted following injuries to Nick Koster and Tonderai Chavhanga. The two were injured within minutes of one another in the first half of the Stormers’ 56-18 win over the Lions at Newlands.
Bobo was then shifted to the wing, while Grant had to take on the task of being Jean de Villiers’ partner in midfield.
Both players looked at home in the positions and that is why Erasmus is likely to keep them there for the clash with the Super14 champions.
The Crusaders are back on the winning path after a poor start in this year’s competition following the weekend’s 17-13 win over the Waratahs in Sydney.
While the Crusaders won, they still don’t look nearly as impressive as the unit that dominated Super rugby for so many years.
If the Stormers are serious about making the semifinals, this is the kind of game they should be winning.
One glance at the log shows under how much pressure the Stormers find themselves.
They had a bye at the weekend and have slipped back into 10th position. Even so, they are only five points behind the Chiefs, who occupy fourth position.
The game against the Crusaders is the first of five on a difficult tour.
“It’s really difficult to predict which games will be the easy and difficult ones. The next one is against the Crusaders. Hopefully we stand a chance of winning and after that we will start planning for the next game,” said Erasmus.
“We know we will have to perform well on tour to stand a realistic chance of making the semifinals.”
It was wet, windy and cold when the Stormers arrived in Christchurch at the weekend. Two of the players’ luggage and several bags with equipment got lost during the trip, but have subsequently been found.
