De Jongh Borchardt - RapportJohannesburg – Sharks lock and captain Johann Muller has heaped praise on his team for their never-say-die attitude against the Chiefs.
The Sharks beat the New Zealanders 22-15 to stay unbeaten in this year’s Super 14.
But while Muller is happy with the Sharks’ outstanding defence, he is worried that they are not using their opportunities.
The Sharks were defending their line deep into injury time as the Chiefs sought to draw the game. They made almost twice as many tackles as the Chiefs.
“We knew the match would be a major test of character. The Chiefs lost their first two games and played at home for the first time. They were desperate,” said Muller.
“But we were prepared and knew we would have to fight to pull this one off. The way in which we defended the last 10 minutes just goes to show how much character the side has.”
Muller praised his backs, especially Frans Steyn, Ruan Pienaar and Stefan Terblanche, for their tactical kicking.
Not only did they force the Chiefs back regularly, but clever cross kicks by Steyn and Pienaar also resulted in two tries for JP Pietersen.
“We placed a lot of emphasis on tactical kicking and knew it would be important. It feels great when something you planned works out in the game,” said Muller.
“The Chiefs are quickly on you with defence and we hoped by kicking well we can exploit the space behind their defensive line. Ruan and Frans were brilliant in their execution.”
The one lesson the Sharks learned is that they will have to use their opportunities against the Blues this coming weekend.
“We don’t want to be in a situation where we have to defend the last 10 minutes like that. We have to use our opportunities better in future.”
