Matfield gets his 'blue' ton

Johannesburg - Victor Matfield finally feels at ease when referred to as a centurion in Super Rugby.

The stalwartBulls player will earn his 100th cap for the Bulls on Saturday when he leads out his side against the Crusaders, a familiar foe in a familiar phase of the Super 14 competition.

This will be the fourth time in five years for these two to meet at the semi-final stage, with the Crusaders winning at home in 2006 and the Bulls securing final berths in 2007 and 2009.

"I have not had much time to think about the 100 for the Bulls, as our focus has been on preparing for the Crusaders," Matfield told www.bluebull.co.za

The popular captain of course reached the 100th game milestone for Super Rugby in March already when he led the Bulls to a victory over the Hurricanes.

On that occasion he indicated that the 100th will only mean something if earned in his favourite blue spurs.

Eight matches played for the Cats in his debut year in Super Rugby in 1999 has given him his start in the competition, but on Saturday it will be 100 for the Bulls too, following Pedrie Wannenburg and Danie Rossouw into an elite group.

"This time around it just feels right and I will enjoy the moment before focusing on the match," Matfield said.

"The fact that it will be at Soweto's Orlando Stadium will make it a memorable one as well."

Matfield, who already holds the record for the Bulls as their most experienced Super captain, also has that distinction in SA Rugby and will lead the Bulls for a national record 59th time.

At national level he is the most experienced lock ever in Springbok rugby (92* tests), played in the most consecutive tests as a lock (26) and shares the record of most test matches as a lock combination with Bakkies Botha (54*), with the latter an international record as well.
