Matfield cited for foul play

Johannesburg - The Vodacom Bulls could have a potential setback after their captain Victor Matfield was cited for an incident during Saturday’s 50-32 Vodacom Super 14 win over the Brumbies.

Matfield will appear before a SANZAR judicial committee on Monday at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria where his fate will be decided.

The Springbok vice captain was cited “under Law 10.4 (a) for striking Brumbies flanker Rocky Elsom around the head area in the 16th minute of the match.”

“The Vodacom Bulls lock was also cited under Law 10.4 (k) for charging into a ruck without binding onto another player.”

The Bulls face the Waratahs this Saturday at Loftus Versfeld and could face a potential lock crisis after a neck injury to Danie Rossouw last week and their subsequent loan of Wilhelm Steenkamp to the Sharks.

Matfield’s long time partner Bakkies Botha is also still on the sidelines with an injury and is only due to return next month.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
